Thread: New forum ranking system?! Phen'ix how does this fit Forum Ranger status

Change scares me. And im worried that Phenix's carefully worked on Master Forum Ranger proposal has been ignored in favor of this scheme. I say we start fifteen petitions in each of the forums asking that this gets changed back to the way its supposed to be in this time period.
Oh yeah and on those 15 posts can you 5 star me please? Thanks im aiming for Chancellor status.

This affects us similarly to the way that FS quests affect an in-game Ranger. If you really feel like going out and working towards it that's your choice, but it's seperate from the Forum Ranger skill tree. Stars? Bars? A Forum Ranger craves not these things.

This is what i posted in regards to the changes. If it goes through in its current state i think we should go through each other's history and 5 start every post. Its not fair that due to griefers players cant reach to top grade 
2. What about one star bandits (eq: those that go through one starring every post)
A: Contrary to popular belief, these are 1. rare and 2. have very little effect on the rating or ranking systems. The only thing it hurts is the bandits wrist. It takes 20 1 star ratings to cause a post to be hidden by the default system. Additionally we are putting measures in to be able to track and even "title" these posters so everyone will know who they are. When we findsomeone who abuses the rating systemwe do lower their "rating" weight to prevent abuse.
Hmm i have mixed feeling about the ranking system. On one hand i like the idea we are rewarded for out time and our rating are taken into account. However on other and this is what concerns me, there are many immature people out there who simply abuse the system on a regular basis because they dont agree with your post.
Saying that one star bandits are rare is incorrect, it just depends on the forums board you visit. I have recently had two attempts at posting in the jump to lightspeed forums for a prolonged time. Both times i have been more or less 'forced' to head back to the relative safty of the ranger forums because people were 1 staring me just because i brought up alternative however constructive points.
I dont like the fact that many many people use the rating system as a tool to agree or disagree and this needs to be addressed. A good example of this is from3 past discussions about what playstyle you would be using most in jump to lightspeed. The majority were discussing about making people allways attackable because their gaming experiences would be ruined if this wasnt the case, a valid opinion. However the problems came when myself and few others posted that our opinions differed in that we prefered PvE. We provides for and against points for the two perspecitves and kept our post constructive at all times, yetwithin the space of 30 minutes i had gone from a 5 star poster to a 1 star poster on ALL my previous postsin those threads ultimatly moving my overall ratings down from a 5 to a 3.
This is not acceptable that immature behavior like this can be taken into account.
Alternative Proposal:
I propose that ratings are only taken into consideration and thus can effect your overall star rating if they are with 1 or 2 starts of the mean value for that post. For example:
I post a long winded proposal on a ranger revamp. I get 10 '5 stars'. Someone comes along and thinks it would be funny to 1 star my post because he/she disagrees with it. The mean for that post would be 5 at that time so this one star would be classed as 'abuse' of the system so wouldnt go towards the ratings.
This solution allows people to spend the time and effort to post constructive feedback and discussion points whilst at the same time limit and even remove the abusive and immature behaviour found common on these forums.
Does anyone have any points or opinions to add on this?

I avoid the JTL forums anyway since the games not even out in beta. And really its all just speculation and a lot of guessing. But those on the BH, TKM, CH forums would never get anywhere.
Of course it all really means nothing in the end unless this system is used to decide who should be chosen for things like the sandboxes, the betas, ect. And 1 star bandits are everywhere. But Im guessing their focus groups told them that no 1 star bandits exists

yeah.
I dont see it realy as a popularity contest but it is a nice thing to reward you for your efforts. It just concerns me that players who regularaly post good feedback get less of a reward because griefers can 1 star.

Well we rangers will just need to stick together as usual and get our good posts rated highly. Maybe go back and necro 5 star some old posts on people we think deserve a higher rank. This of course not knowing what rank they'll get.

Kuro5hin and Slashdot has a similar setup to this, except Kuro5hin allows anyome to vote and judge a post whereas Slashdot you have to get mod points, which you get 5 points for 3 days and they are completely random.
Slashdot, despite being as flame-ridden as it is, has the better system, people abuse the system on Kuro5hin last I knew, where on Slashdot it is much harder to abuse because they check back on where you spent your points, if you spent your points wrongly marking a post as insightful where everyone else marked it as Troll, then your chance to get mod points back is quite lower now. Karma, the rating of your posts, time spent, and a couple other things are what determines you get mod points. It still has a completely random factor but the more time you have been registered on slashdot, the rating of your posts is high will make a large and noticable difference on getting mod points.

Unless it allows you to use a few more HTML tags or other goodies, the rankings aren't much more than a way to pick out the people with well-liked ideas, or an ego boost. 
No one can take away your length of time and post count rating. Once you hit Elder or Leader, you aren't likely to override it with a star count anyways...

Not that I care, but at some point I was a Leader and lost that rank. not sure what I did, but I got busted back to Elder.
