Thread: Harvesting costs
Is it just me, or am I the only one who has a problem with there being no cost to harvesting? By that, I mean it should take action and mind cost to harvest. After-all, it takes cost for a doctor to use a stim, which should be a much easier task than pulling out a hunting knife and carving off 60 units of wooly hide. On top of this, the more hide you're getting, the more it should cost.
I also think that position should have an effect on amount and/or quality (ouch, possible database issues) and/or costs of the hide (or meat or bone, but let's just say hide to make the discussion quicker). If you are sitting down in front of the creature, you should be able to do a lotmore thorough job of harvesting than if you are running full-speed through the pack. Kneeling should be somewhere in-between sitting and standing still, and how much are you going to get if you're prone? Not much I would think.
Another factor that should play a part would be the "tool" you use to harvest. If you are holding a crummy looted survival knife in your hand while you are sitting in front of the creature, you should do a lot better job of harvesting than if you're holding a laser rifle, and if we can get a laser scalpel, watch out! The knives could be crafted by artisans using BioEngineered panels and having sockets to either reduce HAM costs or increase harvest bonuses, and we could even go so far as to have "knife certs" at various hunting levels. "You do not have the skill to use this knife"
Next Factor: Camp level. If you can drag the corpse back to your campbefore you harvest it (or have the pet drag it for you) there's another factor that should come into play, and the only way you're not going to get Battle Fatigue is by being ina camp and/or at-least a Hunt Master or Hunt2 while sitting and using a knife when you do the harvesting.Of course, theHunt Master on upactually reduces Battle Fatige when harvesting from within hissemi-permanent High-Tech Field base(Sorry, I couldn't resist... I tried, really I did)
I'll stop now and let the creative juices start flowing for the rest of you... Flame at will if you must. I'm sure this should be in the scout forums too, but since it's the same dev, and Master Ranger's costs should go to near 0 and I'm Master Ranger already and I want BF heal in camps and... um, isn't it obvious?
Rangers are suffering enough, don't give the devs any ideas to make it any worse for us.
You must not group much. Do you even know what a pain in the butt Rangers/Scouts would be in groups if we had to kneel or sit everytime we needed to harvest and also lose action/health while doing it (as if we don't lose enought of it while in combat)? People want fast-paced combat action, they don't want to wait around forever while we change positions for every corpse we harvest. I knowchanging positionswould be optional, but we would almost be forced to if we want the best quality.
"Rangers are suffering enough"
I see it as a benefit to rangers, not a hindrance. The higher you are in the hunting tree, the better chance you get to harvest with minimum or no penalites. All the more incentive for the Ranger to be the one harvesting.
"You must not group much."
Nope, it's about70/30 grouping/solo but the people I group with are in this game to live and experience the starwars universe, not level-up and become uber in 40 hours of gameplay.
I don't hearcombat medicscomplaining that they can't heal me because then they couldn't use one of their pistoleer skills because of the ham cost. It only makes sense that the act of harvesting should take something out of you, otherwise you might as well make it not cost anything for a doctor to heal either.
Very good... discussions started already ![]()
"just leave well enough alone, theres biggers problems for the devs to deal with."
I'm not saying it needs to go on the top5 list just yet, but I think it should be on "a list" somewhere.

"Another factor that should play a part would be the "tool" you use to harvest."
- I agree. I always thought the absence of a knife in the harvesting process was rather bizarre. What does the hide simply fall off the corpse when you touch it? ![]()
- I like the idea of providing Artisans more "useful" goods. Having the knife degrade each time you use it for harvesting would provide another item that low level artisans could create. There are more than enough Scouts out there to provide a demand for new and better knives. ![]()
"I thought the benefit to investing in the harvesting line is so that you get more resources per instance"
- Glad you asked. Well, since every scout is going to get to take 60% of their normal share after the patch (and how many don't have scout just for the terrain negotiation alone), a group of3 lowbie scouts is still going to fare much better than a Master Ranger, so this gives us a little, albeit minor, edge over them and an actual reason to become Ranger besides a neat looking camp that won't even heal Battle Fatigue and a couple of wortless traps. At the very least, it slows them down a bit from running amok across the countryside ninja-harvesting everything in site. Ok, Ok with the upcoming changes there's much more reason to be a Ranger, but why not ask for more? ![]()
LastEE,
Cause we don't want to get indigestion. ![]()
Let's let the new changes get programmed before we start pestering for more.

I don't see the point really, you can't harvest while fighting. If you COULD I would see it but the only alternative was if piles and piles of bodies were there before you and you needed a limiting factor to how fast you harvest for balance.... but what is the chance of that happening? I never had more then a collection of 6 bodies in one place...
Not sure the extra coding a dev would have to do for this would be justified.
I love the idea of either requiring a knife to harvest or at least providing a large bonus to harvesting! Purely from a realism stand point, it would be impossible to skin an animal or take its bone and hide without some amount of cutting.
And the idea of getting a further bonus by dragging the corpse into a camp or by kneeling before harvesting would both add a lot of realism and it would be another way that upper end rangers could distinguish themselves from scouts.
Maybe there could be certs for various skinning knives. Even better would be if there was a new skill that rangers got in one of their third or fourth blocks that would allow them to spend a lot of time and energy harvesting a creature to get a lot of materials. It could require that the corpse be in a camp (bonuses to this skill from the size and quality of the camp) and that you are using a tool. (more bonuses to the skill from the type and quality of the tool) Maybe it would take 5-10 seconds or more per creature. Heck I wouldn’t mind if it took 30 seconds if the returns were enough. Perhaps it would allow you to extract bone meat and hide all from the same creature. It could be slow enough that it was not a viable means of scouting XP but merely something that would be used to harvest creatures that dropped quality materials in large quantities. So when you drop that AR 3 critter and want as much as possible of his high quality hide, you build your best camp around him, get out your best tool, and spend a bit of time carving him up so none of his resources go to waste. Plus once you reach master ranger, it is really wierd to not have to harvest every corpse the second it dies to make sure nocorpse goes unharvested. It would be cool if once you reach that level where you didn't need the XP anymore there was something to keep harvesting interesting.
I love it! Excellent idea LastEE! Of course I realize this is low on the priority list compared to many other issues but nonetheless it is now on my wish list.
