Your CL doesn't matter. You need to compare your Trapping Level (TL) to the Mob's CL.
This chart is from Almagill and GrandPop and shows what to trap quite nicely.
Novice scout - CL 5 TL 5
Trapping 1 CL 10 TL10
Trapping 2 CL 20 TL15
Trapping 3 CL 30 TL20
Trapping 4 CL 40 TL30
Master scout CL 50 TL50
Novice Ranger TL50
Ranger Trap 1 CL 60 TL60
Ranger Trapping 2 CL 70 TL70
Ranger Trapping 3 CL 80 TL80
Also, you can use the food called Dweezel to boost your TL by around +20 which allows you trap harder mobs for more xp.

This is a great list and will hopefully answer many questions before they're posted... assuming people read first and ask later

Calc,
I don't use trapping droids but wouldn'y one help out while leveling initially or is there xp loss for using one?

And for those that might wonder what to do once they FIND the mob of the appropriate CL for their TL Calc, you might need to include this bit:
- Build traps
- Ready trap in a toolbar slot
- Target creature
- "Throw" trap (radial or toolbar button)
- Hope trap hits
- Curse out loud if you mistakenly threw a Ranger AOE trap and just agro'd the entire herd
- Run like mad for the hills
- Incapped if you're too slow or go after something too big for your CL to let you tank
- Clone if 3rd incap
- Repeat

i have been recently leveling another ranger on another server.
and i have noticed that there's not really a "hard cap" in terms of leveling trapping.
for example, as a master scout, i would hit 75% of the time with +20 dweezel on level 79-81 creatures.
the numbers mentioned are mostly at a 90% success rate, if you're willing to let a few miss, then the xp per trap at a 75% success rate might be more rewarding.

Funny you should mention that but I've been deskilling a ranger toon on one server to free up SP for another prof and found that at Novice Ranger I was hitting pretty much every time, easily over 90%, managing to stack maybe three traps in before the critter got too close (P-dart, glowwire, stink bomb)
Dropped to Master scout, at best it'd be 90%, certainly started to notice more regular fails, and could only get two traps on in the same sort of distance.
This afternoon I dropped Master Scout and OHBOY it hurted. If I was lucky I was getting 1 trap in 5 to stick and was too busy spamming snare and drop shots to try firing more as I kited away from the lair.
Character was CL50/51 on CL50/52 bantha and ronto lairs. No dweezel, no tapes, just a skinny bothan in his skiddies.
So pretty much supports your findings (and that I'd have had better luck if I'd been usin' dweezel, lol)

one last thing:
if you eat some +20 dweezel, then stick a "stink bomb" on the critter, each successive trap thrown will have a higher chance of sticking on the critter.

is it working as intended that when you use an AOE trap you only get xp for 1 creature?

If you are at scout trapping II, find natural spawns of creatures. I went to naboo and found level 15-30 creatures in the wild. Dont forget to take a crate of dweezel, usually +20 to trapping skill, that will allow you to land more traps, and trap higher level creatures.
once you get to trapping III in scout, go to Lok. Natural spawns of sulphur mynock and kusaks, will get you the 70k trapping xp required for master scout.
after that... novice ranger. again.. eat more dweezel, and you should be able to land about 50% of your traps on a level 70 (ish) critter.
important note.. land a stink bomb first, when that sticks, it will lower the defenses of the animal and you will have a higher percentage of successive traps that will stick.
hope this helps.
