Thread: A comment on skill points
One thing that we use as a justification that Rangers should be better is that it costs 140 skill points to master ranger. I decided to do some quick math, and figure out the skill points to master the other elite professions. If I've made a mistake, please correct me.
Bounty Hunter - 217
Commando - 169
Combat Medic - 169
Ranger - 140
Doctor - 140
Squad Leader - 135
Smuggler - 121
Bio-Engineer - 121
Creature Handler - 106
Everything else - 92
Yeah, looks right.
I have one skill point left, can't spend it.
Master Scout, Master Ranger, Master Pistoleer and Novice Medic with Pharm 1. Also full time crash test dummy.

yes but how many rangers do you know that are just rangers and have no combat skills?
Not my point. I didn't say anything about how a ranger should have combat abilities. My point was that a bounty hunter and commando are very powerful. A doctor and bio-engineer are very valuable to other players. Even a creature handler is needed by most large groups. Smugglers and squad leaders probably have similar gripes as us. My point was that this bunch are the more elite of the elite professions, but a ranger doesn't seem as...appealing as some of the others.

We arent as appealing becuase we dont have any of the cool toys....We have pretty camps though, and Tracking
Well, I have only rarely made good use of Track. For those of you with master combat professions and master Ranger, do you ever really use it? And a pretty camp does not a respected profession make.
The really odd thing about Rangers/Scouts is that we're in limbo. Of the starting professions, they're all support (non-combat, supportive to the character and others) or combat professions. Scout isn't. You have to go into combat to get any scouting XP, but it's not a combat profession. You can even "work" out of a hospital as a medic, or group up and not fight, and still advance through the medic profession. But you can't get away with a peaceful life as a scout, yet it isn't a combat profession either.
Scouting skills seem to be more of the toolkit that all professions need to have when they're in the wilderness. So players who ran out of skill points dropped their scout abilities and instead rely on those who didn't. But what really worries me is the space expansion. Rangers won't have a place in space. It will all be useless knowledge, like baseball stats or comic book artist names. You'll sit in a cantina in a jump beacon station and tell all this trivia to the people around you about worrt hunting and the best ways to sneak up on kaadu, and they'll wish you'd hurry up and get drunk so you'd go home. You washed-up has-been. Get a frikkin job.
Ahem. Rangers need more of a combat utility focus than just traps and underpowered support abilities, huh?

I don't want to be an ass, but the only elite professions you listed were ... Doctor, Rangerand Creature Handler. The others are hybrids. The elites in the game are rifleman, carbaneer(sp?), pistoleer, TKA, pikeman, fencer, swordsman, architect, DE, weaponsmith, armorsmith, tailor, chef, merchant, doctor, ranger, creature handler (I'm not sure what in entertainer is elite). These are called elite because they don't need two different professions as pre-reqs.
BH for example, is a hybrid because it needs scout and marksman as pre-reqs.
I don't want to be an ass, but ...
Then don't be. My sincere apologies for using the wrong word. Would you prefer I said "advanced" professions or something? I'll consult my SWG glossary before I post next time.
Hey, who do you call when you need a buttload of hides/bone/meat... Rangers. Right now with all the grinders we are the "Man" or "Woman" or "Sentient".
I could be freaking triplets and not fill all the orders I got. Would be rich except I give the crap away. Ok, some of it, I do underprice the rest.
Do I regret any SP spent on Ranger - No
On Pistoleer - No
On Medic - No
Are BHs the dumbest things walking - Yes (needed a yes answer in there someplace)
No more of this whining about skill points or we will banish you to become a Master Image Designer. Talk about useless.

Why is everyone reading some sort of secret agenda into this post????
I've never claimed rangers were useless. I've never said I regretted being a ranger. I've never dissed rangers in any way. I certainly have not whined about anything.
All I did was post an informational bit so that NRaas and others who are trying to come up with a way to beef up rangers without beefing them up too much can see where they fit within the pantheon of ADVANCED professsions.
Maybe my post the other day about how rangers deserved some attention from the devs because our forum was such a place of solidarity without flaming and such was a bit too hasty.
I'm sorry for pointing out your small error. I just get tired of hearing people say BH are elite. Drives me up the wall.
Actually, that helps make the point even more. That's a lot of points for a class that's not a hybrid and who's main skill is cutting up carcasses.
I'm rifleman/ranger because I want to play a hunter like those I know irl (without the mess
