As of 9:15 am EST, Tuesday, August 23, 2005.

I stood in front of my Commanding Officer, with a few friends and fellow shipmates. The young Third Class Petty Officer walked up to me, rendered salute, and said "Petty Officer you are relieved, I have the watch." I salute, turn to my CO, "Petty Officer, you are now relieved of all duties, as executed by me, until your transfer to the Fleet Reserve on September 30, 2005." I rendered salute to the last Commanding Officer I will ever serve under, "Permission to go ashore Sir." "Permission granted", my skipper says.I saluted, did an about face, and stepped to the carpet. The bells rings, the boatswain whistle sounded and over the speaker was heard "Aviation Structural Mechanic Safety Equipment First Class Mark R. Hewitt, departing." Sideboys salute, a few of them misty eyed along with myself, and I went "ashore" for the last time.

December 11, 1984 - September 30, 2005.

Man it went fast.

"You will complain every minute of it, never have better friends, and miss it when its gone" as spoken by Richard E. Hewitt (March 22, 1941-March 21, 2002), my father, as I got on the bus to boot camp.

I am pretty sure he was there with me.

So, did he tell you It was time for a review of your rank? Or would that just be a resignation from the faction itself?

(had to do it..so i reckon that leaves a lot more time to ranger about now)

wow, man...

maybe i'm just one of them emotional little girls, but that sounds pretty awesome... i have on more than one occasion had to look for that feeling of "goodbye" when moving from one thing to another... sometimes it's just never there the way it should be...

i'm glad you got the feeling... hell, even i got it from that...

i don't know if congrats are in order... but...

excellent job, pal...

Congrats! and thanks for your service.

when i retired from the army, the best part was waking up to receive my final promotion to "Mr."

Congratulations to you, and thanks for your service! Hardest thing I ever did was leave the Air Force behind... still in contact with some of the folks from my last station (Pope AFB) and definitely look back on those times fondly. Even the times I had to spend with those crazy mo-fo's from Bragg (/salute to every last Army guy out there... you guys are HARDCORE! Hooooah! Even with the jumping out of perfectly good airplanes...)

As one of those dudes from Ft. Bragg.. thanks for the safe rides... sorry about the mess i left once, (map of the earth flights are NOT fun) and maybe you could suggest seat pads for green ramp... that place was horrible to take a nap at.

Ahhhn, Green Ramp. They were starting a fairly massive overhaul of it when I was there (I was actually in the Civil Engineer squadron, so got to get dirty and be in the field a bit more than all those damn prissy pilots, and was pretty involved with a lot of the airfield improvements during my time there). I THINK they were eventually planning to put in some kind of cushy waiting area for the Army guys.

Most impressive thing I've ever seen was at my first Pope/Bragg airshow. When they launch all the 130's then you don't see 'em for a while. Then you hear 'em... and then the skies go dark with just hundreds of guys jumping from the plane, along with equipment and whatever else was dropped. I can only imagine how scary as heck that would be if you were one of the "bad guys" knowing that was coming for you... yikes! Seeing those guys hit the ground running (literally) and do what they train to do... I was impressed like I'd never been before. Shiny planes going fast is all pretty and all, but seeing "my" beloved airfield get overrun that quickly and thoroughly and without a whole lot of notice or time elapsed... wow. To quote Lord Vader... Impressive.
