Thread: Master Creature Hunter, should it really be the direction this profession takes?
I myself am a master ranger and have been for awhile now, it has been fun to read all the different ideas people have had on the direction the profession should take in the future. Especially, the whole arguement that Ranger be developed as an Antarian Ranger such as in the novels versus master creature hunter etc, etc....And I can see how the devs initially may have been influenced on what a ranger should be when you compare it to other professions from previously released MMOG's such as EQ. Whether this was truly an influence or not I'll never know.
But now after reading the latest dev posts regarding camps etc not being required for calling pets and droids in the No. 7 publish I have second thoughts on the overall skill set we currently have since half of it will seem to be irrelevant in terms of skill points. With this apparent waste of skill points in terms of usefulness and in the grand scheme of things, and a desire not to leave the profession it has left me looking more at the Antarian Ranger model, especially because it seems to have really more of a "Star Wars" appeal than Master Creature Hunter armed with useless traps (NPC or PC), soon to be useless camps in a SWG universe filled with vehicles and the soon to come droid invasion.
On the other hand, I was reading a post regarding whether rangers could get special faction armor such as swamptrooper armor, scout trooper armor, and any equivalent for other factions. I know this is not a faction based board, but it brings up a development line or model for scout and ranger which I don't think I have read yet, except maybe the Antarian idea, but the idea of a profession basedon a combat class that is comparable to a Imperial Scout Trooper/Rebel equivalent andall that sets them apart from regular and elite combat troops in the movies. All I'm saying is that besides the Antarian rangers being used as a model for the profession,I like some of the other obvious examplessuch as the Scout Trooper type combat role in the Star Wars films.
I know this is nothing new to a lot of you , I just need to vent...lol

I think that as Master Creature Hunters we are the foil to the Master Creature Handlers. We should get and I am waiting for the ability to trap pets. We get that, we will rock the CHs world. Poor graul, all dizzy, and slow, and blind, and ... dead. Sorry, well maybe not.
I am guessing that in order to make scout/ranger more attractive, NRass will get his wish and we get modular camps. Certainly hope so.
By and large the game has been a wee bit static. I honestly don't think SOE realized what they had, and i also think they released it way too early. Such is life. Ican onlypity the poor Devs trying to keep up with the good ideas we come up with, and the moronic ideas some other professions kite.
As to the militaristic model, it's there now. I recon my tail off for raids. I use my camps as rally points. The proposed changes will make us better.
It's up to us Rangers to tell the Devs where we want to go.

"I vote we move away from the Master Creature Hunter personally. With all of the changes that have happened or about to happen, we need to be revamped completely. "
A move towards the paramilitary side of the Ranger name, you say?
As the entire profession was geared towards creature combat to begin with,we would need tochuck out a significant portionof the profession, and pretty much start from scratch.
Those of us who areattracted toRanger because ofthe creature-centric view would be disappointed to lose the only profession that is geared in that direction.
What I suggest, is they rename Ranger to Outdoorsman, and make another elite profession that handles the paramilitary aspect of the nameRanger. ![]()
I can understand that some find rangers less and less useful...
But maybe we could push a little our skill. The modular camp is an example. We could also ask for better traps.
There's something a lot of people do, it's krayt or kimogila hunting. What about asking for traps that have actually a good chance to affect those creatures. For now, I could throw all my traps to a krayt and nothing will happen. What if our traps were valuable to those hunting big creatures.
I'd like to think of more ideas but that's all I have for now. I must admit as a master ranger that I don't use a lot of my skills. Sometimes I drop a high tech camp and people goes "Wow". Sometimes I use my tracking skills to know where to find the next spawn of good meat but that's all.
We need to get things a little higher. I don't think trying to change the profession will make us happy (without saying it would take much more time to get).
Thoughts?
Why do we have to be one or the other? Why cant we have both? A line for traps, and ranger related weapons, a line for the camps ( very similar to much of what Nrass was proposing in his document) , we already got tracking - just tweak it to make it work better, and let our camo continue to actually work against both NPC's and PC's to a degree... That doesnt involve an overhaul, merely modifications from the Dev's original intentions, and its what we have been asking for all along! Nrass is right, Outdoorsman is the title for us, for we are not merely creature harvesters, nor wilderness spys..
I think the ideas behind what we have already is great! Lets just make them all work and expand as the world grows... lets not bicker over if we should be more PvE or more PvP, how about a bit of both like nearly all the other professions!

agreed, but we I think we can think of an actual title better than outdoorsman. Basicly the title "ranger" stirrs up too many visions of paramilitary which don't even exist in our skillset currently. Every tool the devs have given us have been geared towards the hunt of creatures and survival in the wilderness. But outdoorsman is not nearly as exciting soundingas ranger. I'll have to get out mythesaurus . . .

After consulting my thesaurus, I'd like to suggest we be renamed Warden or Game Warden (if we are going to be renamed at all that is).
Alternatively (and my preferred course of action), we could keep our professions name as Ranger, and the devs could make a new para-military profession like the eustar warsRangers and name it something like 'Special Operations Soldier' or 'Sentinel' or something para-military sounding.

Yeah, I don't realy want to change ranger. thesaurus.com offered several ideas, but ranger was included in a sort of "outdoorsman" definition so it does fit, it just gives people too many ideas that conflict with what the devs have in mind for us. Interestingly thesaurus.com had 5 different definitons of ranger and offered alternate words based on those definitions. only one of them was of a military capacity.
About hunting that graul, isn't it level 60ish? So even if traps could effect it the result would be...
Throw trap... no effect
Throw trap.... no effect
Throw trap.... no effect
Scout traps (as opposed to ranger traps) rock soloing; but when grouping the monster is either killed within 30 seconds, or on those very high level creatures that they would be useful on simply have no effect due to the creature level.
I would throw my support to NRass anda Creature Centric "Outdoorsman" (or what ever name was agreed upon) and let the Para Military types have Ranger. Ijust do not want to loose the Creature Centric Profession I love.

Personally, Warden just doesn't sit right with me...
