Thread: What I -thought- the Ranger was
Whenever I hear the word Ranger, a lot of different ideas come to mind. First I think of Aragorn and the slew of other Tolkien-esque Rangers that followed him in fantasy literature through the years. I have the vision of an exceptional hunter who has a superb talent for hiding in the wilderness and stalking their prey.
But then I also think of the Army Rangers. Men and women trained in very similar skills for the purpose of conducting guerilla warfare in wilderness environments. And of course with this being Star Wars, I think of the Antarian Rangers... special ops soldiers who acted as support for the Jedi Knights of the Old Republic. And though I guess it could be argued that the troops that Han led in RotJ were Commandos... personally I think they were supposed to beRangers as well (soldiers specializing in wilderness survival and tactics).
And all of this is basically what the SWG Ranger -was-, at least in theory, until I heard that camo kits will no longer be able to hide us from NPCs. Once again I have file this under "Y" for "You've gotta be kidding me."
Uhm, Devs... You do realize that it isMORE difficult to hide from an animal than from a person right? If you can blend into the wilderness so well that you can hide from a creature, you **edit** sure will be able to stay quiet enough and out of sight of a person.
I was foolish enough to think that camo kits should actually be IMPROVED to include players... a successful camo check would make us disappear from the radar and act as stealthers. And here we are getting nerfed.
The people who run this game never cease to amaze me. Please let this either not be true... or let voices of reason get through to them so that we're not justglorified Scouts.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one not aware of this news at first. It seriously reduces my interest in this profession. I don't even see the point in camo kits now. 9 adventurers out of 10 who have any business at all in the wild already have maskscent, since Scout is a prereq for so much. I would have THOUGHT it was a way to sneak a party past a patrol.
Plus being able to sneak past creature hives is nice... but what good does that do anyone in areas where aggro NPCs abound (which is where all the best hunting is, btw).
I read that last week as well.
I once said that I would never give up Master Ranger....Now I'm not so sure.
Pretty soon we'll find out that our camps were never supposed to allow people to call pets/vehicles, our traps were really meant to be fireworks for entertainers and never meant to affect animals, and that tracking should have been 50m not 500m.

1. accept it. the devs have made their decision so move on. I don't like it either but they can be stubborn and just talking about how much their decision sucks doesn't get their attention very well. I don't choose to follow this view myself.
2. use it to our advantage. ok if cammos are going to be useless to us then let's make a push to get rid of that branch all together and come up with a new cooler skill branch. Maybe some kind of combat branch where we gain cool special attacks to kill animals in the wild and creature pets.
3. think of other ways to make /conceal better. So if they aren't going to let us use it on NPC's (which kinda makes sense if you figure that those NPC's have a personal radar just like your own) then let's come up with other ways to use it to make it better/cooler. It can still be effective in PvP if cammo can be used against player's pets. wouldn't it make sense that if you were effectively concealed in combat and a CH tells his pet to attack you, that pet wouldn't be able to see you and can't attack you until your /conceal is broken. Now our skills are slightly more valuable in battle since everyone will want you to apply the cammo to them to make creature pets less effective.
4. or we can fight. Come up with valid arguements to keep it as it is. the devs like lists, they are easier to read and get the point accross quickly. NRass is a good guy, I think if we give him good ammo, he can go back to the devs and change their minds if that is what we realy want.
this isn't the end of the world so don't just roll over, do something about it. instead of complaining, offer suggestions. think.

I think your right, we have to make a choice. I am in favor of 4. I think that most rangers would agree that they think it should work on NPCs, so if we just give nrass what he needs we might be able to do something about it.

Umm I don't think Canada has rangers- not any that I've heard of in the twenty years i've lived here since birth, anyway. You may be thinking of the RCMP but they are just police with big hats who occasionally ride horses. Nothing too special.

Looks somewhat like Civil Air Patrol. I actually think that a more Law Enforcement/Outdoorsman take on Ranger maybe better, as we have heard examples of what they are in SW.
