Thread: Ranger PvP improvements

Hello All,

Im rather new to this board so I havent seen all the discussion that has gone on in the last few weeks. I read the weekly submission to SOE and agree to some extent with what was said there. I would like to make some recommendations to make Rangers viable in the faction PvP and the so-called masters of the wild.

Scout traps are great to use against creatures, they help immensely! Ranger traps do not really help and are broken nonetheless. My proposal is this: Scout traps are for creatures only, Ranger traps are for humanoids and creatures. Adjust the trap crafting tree so that snare is on the 4th rung and root is in master. Make terrain negotiation bonus be effective against snare and root. (or just snare perhaps) This way rangers are not as vulnerable to thier own devices, and Squad Leaders terrain neg bonus will actually help somewhat.

Concealment - I wasnt in beta so I dont know exactly how this worked. This would be easily done by simply removing the blip from the radar. You dont need to make the ranger invisible per se (though it would be nice) simply removing the radar blip would allow the ranger to use terrain to his advantage rather than a simple button press that makes him invisible. Those ravines and high grass would be good for something after all, not to mention the faster prone crawl would become far more useful in this case.

Camps - Ranger camps shouldnt disband for combat, furthermore, they should provide defensive bonuses to combatants within them.

Terrain Negotiation - over 50 should let the Ranger run faster, or better yet, implement something that allows rangers to burst run longer.. or more often... This would let the Ranger stand out in the role of wayfairing and trailblazing and in PvP, scouting ahead.

I am not trying to ask for min/max changes to the class, after all, Im a ranger now even with all of our weaknesses. I would just like to see our class be a valuable addition in the Galactic Civil War other than providing hides to armor crafters.

They kind of made the Commando the Army Ranger. But then again, I wouldn't mind being "Rambo"

I agree. Ranger needs to be beefed up and I like your suggestions. Ranger needs to be more than just better scouting abilities. Tracking and concealment in wilderness are great ideas.

I disagree that Rangers should have no abilities in PvP. Every class should have usefulness in the GCW, otherwise, factions should not be such a large part of the game. I believe this to be especially true given the amount of quest content based around faction choice. Commando ( another broken class) specializes in heavy weapons, armor piercing, explosions and in your face buttkicking. Contrary to popular belief, the ranger here would be the pathfinding, fast moving, wilderness expert who should know how to be invisible to the untrained eye be it PC or creature. I believe that if you consider the ranger to be the SUPER PvE class, you are wrong, rangers are the super creature harvester class and well, nothing more with no bonuses worth mentioning versus the numerous NPC factions like Binayre pirates and Swoopers.

To think that a class should be basically excluded from the PvP aspect of this game simply because it can harvest a few more hides and make fancy camps..oh yeah, and crawl semi slow instead of molasses in the winter slow is a bit shortsighted. Again, I understand that the implementation of ALL of my recommendations may be overdoing it as far as balance, but the implementation of SOME certainly would not and would make Rangers far more viable in the grand scheme of things.

those sound great. If the traps do not work on bipeds, at least have them work on pets... they are creatures after all, right?

I can live without the ability to trap PC's, but I see no reason why a Ranger should not be able to trap the pet of a PC.

As for just removing the "blip" from the radar, for conceal to work right they would also have to remove the ability to auto-target, when it works. Otherwise, someone could just hit auto-target to find a concealed Ranger. Of course, we have to get the ability back before we get anything added/removed from it.

Finally, as many have said, more traps.

Traps that work too... honestly, trapping tier is pointless unitl it's fixed. Although Master Trapper title is cool... actually, they should change it to Trap Master and make Hunt Master Master Hunter. Just me tho.

I would rather see rangers with bonusus ONLY against creatures being more significant... this isnt a PvP class at all. Its not like an "Army Ranger" combatant... its a "Ranger" like "Park Ranger" kind of fellow.

More creature bonuses, skip the PvP

Speaking also as a Rifleman Ranger it would be pretty powerful but thats why we can put limitations on it.

The distace from cities, etc limitation.

Two - we can put a timer on it.

Three - You cant be in combat or a target when trying to coneal.

Four - have to stand still for X until you can /conceal

Five - Can only walk while concealed

Just suggestions - I'd like to see it happen though.

I don't really agree with the fact that a lot of people seemily want the Ranger to evolve into some PvP demon profession. However, i think that Rangers should have the ability to trap CH pets in pvp, because even with the nerfs they are going to recieve, 3 rancors on me is still going to kill me pretty quickly.

Conceal should also be put back in especially from npc's,but against pc's then we should only be concealed when we don't move and are prone maybe.

I don't think these suggestions make for a 'PvP demon'. I think what people are getting at is that Rangers should have at least some functionality in PvP. Right now there is not one ranger skill that is used.

I agree with a post I saw in another thread. I see rangers being a natural counter to creature handlers.

Ahh, its good to see the discussion continues after sleep. Well, back at it.
Riflemen should not get conceal in thier tree, they already get one shot kills. If a rifleman wants to be a master ranger too, then sure, enjoy the conceal that removes your blip. As an amendment, I would not be asking for stealth spam ability where I could pop in and out of concealment whenever I wish with the press of an F key. My idea was that once you shoot, you are no longer concealed, you have a 30 second timer before you can reconceal. You have to be prone to conceal (not for realism, but for balance) this would also make the higher terrain negotiation more important. There is no single reason why a pack of rangers in the forest shouldnt be able to ambush a herd of stormtroopers passing by. I think EITHER the implementation of stealth, OR the implementation of PC trapping. I dont think we should just stop at CH pets because I hate to break it to you, an apprentice sharpshooter/creature handler would one shot you before you threw your first trap at one of his 3 rancors, or even at him for that matter. Would getting one of these two abilities make Rangers the PvP demon? No. Some would say "That lets too many professions get uber combinations." Hmm, have you seen how the melee professions get kited to death all the time? Grouping with/becoming a ranger would solve that problem with the traps implementation. I am not thinking of only the ranger, I am thinking of contribution and the problems of other classes as well. Give us something that makes us useful in PvP that goes with the class idea.

We do need traps that work on creature type pets. Just because they are PC controled doesn't mean they're not creatures anymore. That would give the class all the PvP we need (imagine Rangers as the CH nerf), and keep us a primary PvE class.

As far as removing the radar blip...Well that really belongs to Rifleman under their Concealment branch. They are the PvP snipers and the Radar only comes into play with players. Take us off the Creature's Radar.
