Thread: Scout/Ranger camp/trap/camo kit pricing advice

Firest of all, I realize that pricing is very server dependant and any advice I get here won't necessarily apply to Naritus where I "live".

However a fellow there is starting a merchant arrangement where crafters can sell crates of their product to merchants whose sole "business" will be resale. He asks us what our normal prices are in order to come to an arrangement.

I've given up most of my crafter type skills but still make crates of traps, camps and camo kits. He expressed more interest in these and my resources than anything else I could make (since I only dabble in meds and powerups). I'm looking for what other people charge for their traps, camps and camo kits (either individually or by the crate) in order to give me a ballpark in which to make an estimate.

TIA

Interesting, as the only people who can use this stuff can also make this stuff usually from materials they have on hand.

I was in a similar situation, but also was Artisan enough at the time to make power-ups. They sold great, some camps sold, no camo kits after people realized you had to be a Ranger to use em, or be with a Ranger to use em.

Alas, Artisan went away. I now sell only hides, and give my meat away to friends, as they don't whine about the quality.

Good idea, let us know how it works.

The person I was talking to seemed to think it had some merit. I guess we'll find out and if it doesn't prove to be worth it I guess I'll pull my factory down except to run a few jobs for personal use. I wonder how useful it is to get a crate of camps and not have to carry the stuff around? Or not have to take the little bit of time it takes to craft it on the spot.

Was that 1k price per crate or per kit?

"I wonder how useful it is to get a crate of camps and not have to carry the stuff around?"

Hmmm...

As for camps, I don't see much need to carry them around myself as I can make them all on my own.

  • You can however sell the High Quality Camp Kit to Master Scouts, who can not make them, but can use them.

  • If those Master Scouts are looking for a more appealing camp and don't want to pick up the Novice Ranger skill themselves, you might have a market available there for crated camps

Now for camo kits... I fully intend to start crating those darn things.

  • I hate having to stop and craft up some new ones, so crating those puppies up is a grand idea (and saves me some inventory in the process).

As for selling this as a service to others...

  • I know that some Doctors are able to make a living off selling crated med components off vendors.

  • But that is only to people who can't produce them themselves.

  • I don't know how many Rangers there are who can't produce their own kits, and would still be willing to use them.

Haven't played with the Camo kits since they don't seem work right now. But I was under the impression in order to camo a group of people they all needed kits am I right? If so then you could sell them under that condition. I've been thinking of starting a Expedition company on some of the harder planets, and I wast thinking of charging a fixed fee which include these kits.

I've used my Corellian camo kits to walk right by some of the lower level thugs in town and not get jumped. They've worked moderately well out in the wild but that may be more dependant on my skill than their usefulness/quality. From what I've read in other places here once you have camo you can use a kit even if you can't make them. I have a deal in the works now where a higher level ranger will make me the schematic for Talus kits if I can get enough of the resouces to make two crates (one for me one for her) assuming we can get the schematic from her to me somehow.

Since you can camo yourself or another person, only one person in a group needs Ranger & the skill and they can camo up the whole group. It drops when you initiate combat so a crate of kits might be useful to those doing the hunting guide business since they'd likely go through them faster.

As long as experimentation on camps and traps doesn't work then I guess the only utility in those will be the convienence rather than their usefulness since the people who can use them can also make them.

"But I was under the impression in order to camo a group of people they all needed kits am I right?"

You need a kit per person, that is correct...

  • But only a Ranger with the /conceal skill can use the camo kit.

So unlike Stim-B sales, which Medics can sell, and alot of people can buy and use...

  • camo kits are only useful to people with the /conceal skill

  • Or people who aretravelling with a Ranger with the /conceal skill

----

Now a Ranger who intends to /conceal a large group would find a crate to be invaluable...

Most of the time, a Ranger will only need to /conceal those in the group that don't have /maskscent (such as the Medics, Entertainers).

  • Everyone else can use /maskscent and receive reasonably good results, without the use of resources.

I was given to understand (and this has been my experience but I haven't tried it against higher level NPCs) that mask scent works against creatures but NPCs can "see through" it and will jump you as if you didn't have it up. Conceal is supposed to (again from what I've read and personal experience) hide you from creatures AND NPCs

And I've been to the Emperor's Retreat on Naboo (as a covert Rebel) with two friends who I used /conceal and a camo kit on and we got in there without a problem. On the way out they both got jumped by something but I don't recall if conceal or camo played a part in that. In that case I was the only one with a camo kit and it ate one use every time I applied it, be it to myself or to them.

"I presume this is because when I approached the lair a check was made against my skill when I got into range."

The process that occurs if you have /maskscent or /conceal enabled:

A check is made within 64m of all aggressives

  • If you succeed, a timer is set on the creature (3 minutes or something), and the creature ignores you

  • If you fail, your conceal will drop immediately

Once the timer runs down, the creature will check you again, and process repeats.

If you attack a creature that has social friends, consider yourself free game... As all the social creatures will be alerted to your presence by your target.

If you attack a creature without social friends, you /conceal will drop, but all creature you already checked against will continue to ignore you...

"Conceal is supposed to (again from what I've read and personal experience) hide you from creatures AND NPCs"

You are completely correct.

For the most part however both /maskscent and /conceal are not really required...

  • A careful player can simply walk around any aggressives, without the use of the skill.

Where I see /maskscentas being really useful is if you want to actually get up close and personal with some aggressive (bio engineers for instance, or lair looters looking for eggs).

And where /conceal is really useful is that you can conceal other players... So they don't require to spend points in scouting to get /maskscent themselves.

  • By concealing mydoctor companion, I ensure that he does not get aggroed when I die in battle...

  • Allowing him to drag my body out of harms way and revive me at his leisure.

----

There are bugs concerning /conceal and humanoid npcs that the A.I. programmers have yet to resolve, which makes using the skill around humanoids rather dangerous.

  • As it might work occasionally, and then fail completely the next time

All in all, I think the concept is sound... But the implementation is drivingme batty.

Ah thanks. All the mud is clearing away and I think I see (as well as finally noticing your sig as being the Ranger correspondent). Let me take this opportunity to ask another question and pose my answer to see if I'm correct.

I mask and approach a lair I'm on a destroy mission against (for aggro non-social critters in my example here). I unmask when I shoot one of them and he dies. None of the others seem to take note of me or react in anything other than the usual animations. I presume this is because when I approached the lair a check was made against my skill when I got into range. If I pass it at that point another check isn't made unless a) I go out of the range and come back in or b) the creature goes out and comes back in. Correct?

And also one to which i dont have the answers. I plan to eventually start selling these in my own Ranger/scout store. Yes this store will be specifically geared towards selling items necessary for rangers and scouts. I havent done it yet but in order to figure our my prices i will base it on the amount of resources needed per crate * 3 (standard market value)+ A (arbitrary cred value i will assignment to items based on complexity level). And after that I will adjust accordingly to what sells and what doesnt.

Certain things im sure will be able to be given higher prices, like Dath camo kits, HTFB, for instance.
