Thread: Rifles or Pistols

Well I am one box away from my master ranger box(camping oh joy) and am nearly half-way up the rifleman tree(2/1/2/2). When I started this game, I was a scout that was doing the marksman pistol line and that was pretty nice, however I just liked the idea of hunting with a rifle(This was before I knew the glories of the T21.)

If you master Rifleman you do get speed bonuses to your rifles, I am not sure as how much faster you go at master but I here a master rifleman is much better at killing things than a 4/4/4/4 rifleman as in people say the master box really makes a difference.

One of the level 1 boxes gives you conceal shot, now I lay prone while using this and I have only been aggroed once so far by my target when using it and that is when it was already in combat(It hits random pools so for bigger things on dantooineyoumay drain you mind before you kill them.)

Also from what I have read on the rifleman board and see in the skill tree is half the class is made for sninping and the other for heavy gunning. So you will use headshots and mindshots for sniping as well as suprise shot which I hear does nice random pool damage. You evetually will get AoE shots as some higher up skills like Flurry shot 2 I believe I forget if there are any more, I think possibly flushing shot 2 which stuns and raises an oppents posture.

Now if you go rifleman I may suggest keeping the range support line in marksman for the suppression fire and warningshot. Warningshot can be your friend to scare away animals that get too close. NOw in the rifleman tree you get flurry shot which makes things dizzy, since Ranger doesn't have any advantages against NPCs(except for thecamo which isn't supposed to work against NPCs)using a dizzy and a change posture maneuver(like supression fire or flushing shot) can cause them to fall down, again and again.

Also terrain negotiation gives us faster crawl speed, now I have wayfaring 4 and I move at 1m per second while crawling so it is handy so that if you are prone your prey has a hard time walking out of your range.

Basically Conceal yourself with camo, or maskscent go to about 60-64m from your target if you have a t21 lay prone and either headhsot it to death(plus mind bleeds) or conceal shot the lower end stuff to death. I am not too sure on the tactics of AoE shots yet.

Oh an buy yourself a good spraystick, its like a pistol for the rifleman so you can hit a broadside of a barn at a close distance. Also make traps like Pdarts for when those critters get in close. Also the T21 rifle which you get for rifleman is HEAVY armour pierrcing from what I understand every level of armour class you are over a prey's armour rating you get bonus damage(I think thats what I read don't hold me to it.)

I don't know much about pistol except you get defense against alot of satus changes, plus you get melee defense so you can pistol whip an animal to the ground then shoot it for whatever the heck bonus damage a KD gives you.

Now I hope I am coherent enough to be of help. Happy Hunting!

With Rifleman as it is right now you will be shooting once per second at master as long as you keep Master Marksman.

Speed won't be an issue.

You will hit everything even at point blank at master or even close to master, so that won't be an issue. You will basicly be a killing machine and you will like it alot!!

There is horrible talk of a possible 3 second speed cap for rifleman in the future... I don't know where this came from, but if it happens then we won't shoot that fast anymore.. but for now, rifleman is definetly the way to go.

Aside from all of that, Rifles and Ranger just fit better.. you hunt with rifles... not pistols... Fits the image

So I say go with rifle. Keep ranged support as previously suggested... you will want warning shot and suppresion fire.

I'm at the same point you are. I've decided to go with Carbines.

I look atit this way:

Pistols are the fastest, Carbines are in the middle, Rifles are the slowest.

Pistols are the weakest (in terms of one shot ham hits), Carbines are in the middle, Rifles are the strongest.

(in my experience) Pistols are for 0 to 45m, Carbines are good for 0 to 60 m attacks, Rifles work best for anything over 45m.
(Those distance are just what I've noticed. Pistols for example, tend to miss more than they hit past 45m. Or, at least, mine do. All the rifles I've had seem to do poorly at anything under 45-50m.)

Carbines seem to be the all-purpose tool, at least to me anyway. They have some decent attacks as well. /warningshot rocks, I used it last night pretty effectivly against horsies (gualamamas? whatever they're called. I call em horsies)

With the help of a buddy of mine who's trying to train up a wookie doctor (all he did was heal me), I was able to consistently solo 2 horsies at the same time. I'd warning shot one, then work the other over for a bit with /autosingle, then I'd warning shot the other, and work the first one for a bit. It took a while, and I couldn't have done it without having doctor feelgood with me, but it was a lot of fun all the same. He spent way more time healing my action bar, than my health bar.

Capper spine flap soldiers also work well as a backup crew when hunting horsies and chickens (kaadu's), but they tend to be rather difficult to control at times, and the area effect shots tend to irritate them. We of course found this out the hard way. Wookies are seen as a chew toyby Capper Spine Flaps it seems.

And just to make your decision even more difficult...

One big advantage for pistoleer is that you are close to your prey and can quickly harvest them after each kill. Rifleman either do a lot of running in between kills or risk losing the harvest when they decay.

Both Masters of Rifleman and Pistoleer are very good in combat. Rifleman usually take a much large Mind hit when using specials compared to the much smaller Action hit on most Pistoleer specials.

Rifleman ConcealShot is incredible though and will probably be nerfed sometime in the future. It's a tier 1 skill I believe and with it, you can easilytake out a group of storm troopers without them ever seeing you.

Fred: Hey, Something just hit me in the head. Is that blood?

Lou: Don't worry about it. Was probably just a bee.

Fred: Dang, There's another. This is starting to hurt.

Bob: You Whiner

Fred: Ouch. Ok, this isn't funny anymore. I think someone is shooting me.

Jack: Grow up, Fred. I told you not to drink so much last night.

Fred: Uhh guys. there's a lot of blood by my feet.

Bart: For pete's sake, will you shut up Fred, I'm trying to listen to the game.

Fred: Uhhg - Plop.

Bob: Boy is Fred going to be in trouble when he wakes up.

Jack: Hey, Something just hit me in the head. Is that blood?

Bart: Come on guys. Wake up.If the boss shows up, you're all gonna get killed.

Bart. Hey, Something just hit me in the head. Is that blood?

Bart: Hmmm. I need to get a can of bee repelant.

Hah.. nice conversation there.

Pistoleers usually have someone say,

"Hey, get him!..."

Fanshot is quite fun..

Once you hit master rifle man speed is not an issue!! you fire as fast as everyone else. And do more damage!!

I've never lost a harvest because of the range I shoot from.

Conceal shot will not be nerfed... it's too slow and it targets random pools...so it can take you a long time to kill something.. I personaly don't use it cause its just plain boring.

I say go with rifleman. Even if they do implement that 3 second speed cap. Rifles go better with Ranger. I don't miss out on any harvests when hunting. Once you hit Master Rifleman you will be like OMG!!! It is that different than 4/4/4/4 or less.

Yes I know it's my decision in the end but I'm finding it very hard to decide. I'm on my last box of the marksman profession and the time to choose the weapon to specialise is at hand. I love the way you an 1 shot white cons with the rifle but the slow speed drives me crazy when I miss a couple of times. The pistol doesnt hit nearly as hard but I know that even if I get jumped by the mob(s) I will come out ok. I am a ranger who spends most of her time solo hunting for resources for people

Anyone out there have any arguments for or against either weapon? I would just love to hear the opinions of people who have taken the weapons higher up really to help me decide. I'm assuming I don't have enough skill points for master ranger and 2 weapon master but feel free to correct me if thats wrong.

would say rifleman too. conceal shot is you're friend as long as the targets do not pack assist, otherwise your targets friends will come for you after the first shot. Even when im aggroed and running away, squeezing off a few strafe shot2s would bring down my pursuers

We need to "sticky" this one. I can't count how many times this subject has come up on this board. Almost as bad as the "how to grind trapping" ones.

"We need to "sticky" this one."

There is an old "Ranger+What?"thread in the Ranger Threads list available in my signature.

But it is rather old, I should probably replace it with a newer thread.

I am a master ranger and have just taken novice rifleman too, the first skill I have learned in novice rifleman is Conceal shot, and it is worth every bit of exp I spent getting it, I use a T-21 with 480max damage, I only got the conceal shot skill last night but tested it outside Mos Eisley, I dropped a Rogue Bantha in 2 shots and a Scyk in 1 shot, and they never even knew I was there.

The trick for conceal shot is that you can mask scent or camouflage yourself, go prone, and hit a creature to your hearts content without it aggroing you, if you don't get the creature down the first time, go peace on it, wait for your mind to recharge then hit it again with the same...... plus I think conceal shot does something like 2.5X your rifle's max damage for each shot (i may be wrong).

I also have pistols level 4 and obviously my traps just to finish them off if they break my conceal shot and get too close.

For a Ranger I think rifles is the way to go, it's not always necessary to have uber power to drop big creatures, most of the time it's the technique you use that's important

Hope this helps
