Thread: No grinding in the Ranger class

Just wanted to touch on a common theme going around right now. Also, since we are in the beginnings of a possible overhaul (lets hope...i.e. The Outdoorsman)...it is always nice to remember our finer qualities.

Outside of a few Holo's....people who Master or get into Ranger never mind that it really isn't a 'grind' profession.

I mean it is kinda tough to grind out camping XP. I'm not saying it can't be done, but those of us who have attained the higher camp levels are more likely to have received the camp xp through large hunting parties....or hangin around the fishing hole. The ranger tree just isn't built to be a grind it-shoot it and run around and spam it profession.

So whats my point?

Everybody seems to agree that you move through the ranger proff 'while' enjoying the game...not grind through to 'eventually' enjoy the game.

It's in the path we take that makes us Rangers. I'm not so concerned with the PvP I might have taken in the other night as much as that cool mountain ridge I was sitting by on the eastern side of Tattooine.

This is what separates us.

Ya I was hunting Banthas by the Krayt graveyard with a few friends the other day when two over zealous adventurers came speeding up on swoops and asked if I knew where any Krayts where. I tend to keep an eye on what's around so I don't go burstrunning in the wrong direction and was able to tell them there were 2 of the big lizards about 600m north of us. This seemed to please them greatly and after a 'kewl, k thx' they sped off in high spirits.

I checked a few tracks while wiping off Bantha slobber between fights and they never did get the dragons, poor kids.

I just love camping out by the Krayt Graveyard and saying, "You don't really wanna take that thing on by yourself, do you?"

Hehe

Thats why we are who we are...and every now and then we get asked to help out a hunting group when it comes down to these giant beasties...there is where our experience can come into play.

I was helping a group lead a party against a giant canyon krayt dragon a few weeks ago and just being able to track em isn't enough. I was able to help them (1st time, although plenty of people in group) organize properly to hunt the KD's...advice on using tanks and cold weapons...good placement for doctor's and camps while the group took on the beast (this is where our RL smarts and exp come in...track those NPC's and other aggro's as well here for good doc location)...

This is where we rangers can really be of service until the dev's straighten a few things out...I'm a good ranger not because I can hit examine and find out the giants are only 40% resist to cold vs. 70% to all else...but I am a good ranger cause I 'already' know this ahead of time due to my hunting experience...thats what separates us pro rangers from the rest.

Now take me to Lok and I'm a mess....only hunted kimo's once...but tend to stay near tattooine anyway...I am a much more effective ranger there.

Plus our camps can really be a good break-in-the-action typ eof place until they get upgraded.

Still waiting for that hunting trip though Shaden...will be back online after my move in a few days!

The title is a bit misleading as what you've stated isn't 100% true, even though I do know what you are getting at. You can grind Survival XP just like any other crafting class would by crafting camps. It's how I did the last 5k or so that I needed for Frontiering 4 the other day.

Yeah, I hear ya...but the point is (which you might have gotten) that most rangers tend 'not' to grind through this profession....of course almost anything is grindable...but most of us don't grind as much as we experience things...that is my point.

Happy hunting!

Good post..

I am Novice CH, Pistolteer, Scout (about 2K from getting to that “top block” for Master Scout) and have been looking at Ranger as it suites my play style. I enjoy the hunt and exploring the scenery. Even now I proudly were the Hunter title.

Its good to see there is a class that fits my play style and there are other players who also enjoy it.

I look forwarded to getting that Novice Ranger title and continuing the hunt.

Good Hunting!

Rohan...best of luck attaining that Ranger title...I think you will like it...as many do. Just remember, it is what you make out of it.

Ok, y'all finally have been "JB-itized" to steal a term, sorta.

I have been screaming forever that grinding sucks, that it's the journey, not the destination.

I took several weeks to finally Master. Of course I did it literally minutes before the server shutdown when the patch do drop Survival XP went into effect, but I did it under the old system. Never did macro camp, why? Waste of electricity, cat could crawl on keyboard, just plain somehow "not right".

The big test comes after opening your holocron and getting a profession that is so easily grindable - like Chef. With enough resources you could sit in your little house and grind your fingers off, only coming out to train. I realized that I was not in the game to do that, said poop on it, and sold all the stuff I did have to a friend, who also got Chef.

(Side note - 3 people who know one another all get Chef? Statistical probability of that?)

Anyhow, after tossing that grinding idea crap into the toidy, I figured I can dabble here and there if I want. But I will remain a Ranger. Happiness to me is revamping Jedi so you keep your original character and the skills would be locked at what you have when you open the slot, but hey, what do I know, or count for?

Rangers lead the way.

Ya I dropped my Master Ranger title to try some holo influenced profesions knowing that I can Master Ranger anytime just doing what I like to do. First holo was Brawler which I've enjoyed so much I'm going to give up my carbines and become a Swordsman or Pikeman. Second holo was chef.... don't think this grind is for me so I'm taking Ranger back and I'm going to go hunt Kimo's with just me, my sword and my leaky tents

Well I have to disagree with this post.. I chose to master the Ranger profession as a nice compliment to being a Master Creature Handler. Aside from the camping exp, I essentially got Master Ranger in about 5 days, and it wasnt really 'grinding', nor was I really 'enjoying' the leveling. Truthfully I have found that in SWG that 95% of the professions are not really 'rewarding' until you get to the master level, and I find that any profession I choose next, I will try to Master it at hologrind pace simply because most professions arent fun until you are master. Granted, its FUN to go out a hunt with your friends, and in that regards its fun to 'get experience'. But as for satisfaction from the skills you gain in a profession, they are never fully actualized until you get master.

Truthfully in comparison to most other professions, Mastering Ranger is quite easy. Trapping exp is by far the EASIEST tree to master, maybe in the game. I tanked my pet on Voritor Hunter and tossed trap after trap, for 976 exp per toss. I didnt even kill one, but I got 75k exp in about 7 minutes. ?? As for scout exp, just /maskscent and ride around Dathomir in Rancor country. Took me about 2-3 days to get the 2 scout trees without really spending ridiculous hours on it. I got maybe 50k exp an hour.

So to conclude, I feel that the Ranger profession really isnt that difficult when you take out the camping exp.. and in my opinion its quite easy to power level through, regardless if its hologrinding or simply trying to get Master. Camping exp is the only lead weight in this profession, but yeah, you can sit in camp and grind away. It probably did permanent damage to my eyes from staring at the screen, but it does get done eventually.

The vehicle/maskscent thing I found to be nowhere near as efficient as simply skinning things - I gained about 30k xp in a ten minute fight against a mass spawning piket lair with my guildies, I was strictly support (master doctor/ranger doesn't leave anything for combat) and was just harvesting and healing nonstop for the duration.

I did ride around endor and yavin on my bike once, but that was mostly to just explore points of interest, the xp gain was a nice aside really but that was about it (and quite frankly, with the warping you get when dismounting, it was almost invariably a hell of a lot MORE dangerous than just going slapping things).

I ground survival xp, but then I'll admit I was a hologrinder ranger and just wanted to get it done and out of the way, I've since started going back to master swordsman and master doctor, I kept tracking as long as I could, but I've had to drop almost all of it now due to a lack of skillpoints, the rest of the profession I dropped like a bad habit I'm afraid as it served no purpose to me.

I really hope rangers get some loving soon, because the people who play are by and large the nicest bunch I've ever dealt with, nearly all in it for the love of the profession, but it just isn't for me, I'm a medic, always have been, always will be.
