There's another thread on this, but it doesn't stand out as being cautionary from the title.
When you respec, to "buy" boxes, it costs respec points. Please be aware that Ranger boxes "sell" for the same as everything else, but have one point extra per box to "buy" the skills back. Therefore, if you want toRespec (back) into Ranger while you have any other Elite mastery, you will NOT also be able to achieve Master Ranger. You will have to earn back two boxes the old fashioned way.
I found this out the hard way tonight.
See this thread for more info and info on how the Respec points system works:

So when you drop a box it gives you a certain amount of points and then to buy back that box it takes one more point than you got for dropping it? This means the skill Respec will eat points until in thoery you could have none left?

You may want to change the title of your thread to make the warning part more highlighted. Something like:
WARNING: Do not drop or respec to Ranger, you will loose respec points (bug)
And then Owen can sticky it or something. I don't really see how anyone who looses points this way can get them back, without them rolling back the server. How do you proove you used to have more points?
Hopefully I am wrong and you and ohers who have respeced out of Master or into Master in order to try it out can get their points back.

I don't want to ask this, cos I'm afraid of what the answer might be, but is Ranger the only prof this applies to?

So you're saying that it's only ranger boxes that are more expensive to buy back?

I honestly don't know. One reason people thought they did this is because Ranger is harder to get than a combat profession, therefore should be worth more points. However they seemed to have forgotten to make you gain the same amount of points back that you pay to get it. I didnt look at the other profession costs. Trying to think of other "difficult" profession - maybe the investigation line of BH? Not sure.

Pre CU
Master Rifleman/ Master Pike/ TKA 4004/ FS (16 pts)
Post CU
Master BH/ Master Ranger/ SL 0000 (FS 12 pts)
I did not see any problems, except that FS cannot be respec'd

Nor did I...In fact my respec went so well that I don't have to worry about grinding camps anymore.

Ok new theory. I tested this out on one of my trash characters. Actually Raruk tested this for me since I am at work.
He logged on and did the respec. He gave up Novice Brawler so he had 1 Novice point free. He hit ok and yes I am sure I want to respec. He did a sample respec and that one free point was gone.
So if you respec and have extra points to spare - you loose those extra points when you hit ok. So if you spec into something and end up with say 4 extra points you cannot buy anything with and hit ok, the next time you respec you will not have those 4 points to play with. You will only have the point you gain from surrendering boxes.
Ug. So be very very careful that you have no points free when you finish your respec. Ranger is messy because it costs more than other profs so you end up with odd amounts of points at the end - points you will loose if you are not careful.

I chose the title because I've found a lot of people don't even realize there's respec points. I figured this one was a big more clear.

Only if you keep buying and selling Ranger boxes, since this only applies to Rangers. (I did forget to check BH, though.) Anyone else, if a box "buys" for 7 points, it "sells" for 7 points. For Rangers, boxes that "sell" for 7 points "buy" for 8 points.
Which means it costs 18 Elite points extra to "buy" Ranger, on top of the extra two trees' worth of Standard points it costs to get Scout.
I'm thinking that the fact that the boxes sell for less than they buy for is a bug.

I think you must be right about it being a bug. I loggd on today and it wasn't working that way. If it is still selling for less for you make sure you contact a CSR!
