I was just wondering as taste difffers from player to player, there has to be a good ranger weapon. I am currently a Master Marksman and am going to have to surrender some marksman skills to continue my path to Master Ranger. I just dont know if I should surrender Carbine, Rifle, or pistol.

I currently use a Laser Carbine, Laser Rifle, and a FWG pistol, but am needing to buy new ones. Before I do I may as well start using my long term weapon of choice. Any advice would be appreciated.

I use a rifle, a laser rifle to be exact.

I think rifle fits the Ranger concept the best.

I don't go deer hunting with a Glock or an M16. I hunt with a 7600 centerfire pump Remington rifle (or my Browning compound before my torn rotator cuff).

Thats not to say there can't be quickdraw gunslinging hunters or.. um, someone that likes to mangle a creature with machine guns.

I'm sure there are people that get "hardcore" and want to take down a buck with a spear (readike) or a sword (read:suicide).

Having said all that... Don't go rifles until they get some serious lovin. I just picked up pistols and I can own creatures solo that I stand no chance against without the aid of my pets. I may actually drop all of my Rifleman to experiment more with pistols, or maybe even a melee weapon.

Well, I started with rifle, however since I also use a pet I switched to Carbine (Pistol would have actually been better I suppose, but don't have the points right now to get pistol up to where carbine is). Rifles mind damage doesn't complement the health/action damage a pet will mostly do, and the damage it does to me can't be healed with stims.

So the next question I have is .......

Should I drop Ranged support and Rifle and Carbine for all pistol? I will sure miss my Master Marksman. But cant wait for Master Ranger. I also have CH skills but dont plan to go very far with it.

well, you might want to hang on to ranged combat support, at least to the third box. Warning shot comes in awful handy sometimes. And don't get rid of all your skills at once, just as you need the points elsewhere. Never know when you're gonna change your mind on something and have to re-earn a bunch of skill points.

I'm a 4-1-1-4 Rifleman, I'll grind till I max out combat xp and rifle xp then worry about it. With the way things change around here, you never know.

So I went nuna hunting unarmed, maxed xp 2k iirc, then used a knife, polearm, axe etc. Might as well Goof off when I can. Its funny to see a Master Ranger lying on their back looking up at the stars as a Chuba sits there looking back at you

I'm using a laser carbine. Its ideal range is 50m, which is pretty darned close to trap range. That way I can stick a creature right around my maximum to-hit bonus for several shots. Few of the things I hunt actually get close enough to damage me. (Unless three phecnacine darts all fail, which is beginning to happen with alarming frequency.)

My Second Char is a Ranger/Tailor/Medic. She doesn't believe in killing, especially amongst the animals of the land. Weapon? I have no weapon. The animals love me, and i love them. If they decide to not love me, a well placed adhesive trap and an uber Stim-B make things all better

Because getting to Master Ranger takes up a lot of skill points, i think its best to focus on only one type of weapon. Rifle seems to work well with our ranger abilities but Pistol is also a popular weapon due to its versatility. Regardless of what weapon you use, I'd recommend keeping at least Ranged Weapon III. When things start to look bad, Warning Shot is invaluable.

My plans are:

Master Ranger
Pistol IV
Ranged Weapon Support IV
Pistoleer 0-4-4-4
Novice Medic 1-1-0-0

Of course all that may change when/if Pistoleer is fixed.

My two cents for what it is worth, I kinda go against the norm here but.. as of now I have almost maxed out the Marksman profession, and use a pistol and carbine that prone bug with rifles sux. I plan to go 0/0/3/4 inthe Bounty Hunter line, my thinkingis thatin my eyes makes me more of what a Antarian Ranger should be, very deadly.

Go pistoleer or carbineer. I chose pistoleer because the HAM costs of a decent carbine are really high but those will be adjusted downward in the near future so I'll reexamine my choice then. In the meantime, I use a sliced FWG5 pistol and a sliced scout pistol. The scout uses energy and the FWG5 uses heat, so I'm covered against most creature resistances. I can dish out good damage with them and I don't take a total ass kicking if my warning shot fails to keep the creature at a reasonable (read: outside of melee) distance. If you use a rifle and the baddie closes the distance on you, you're toast because of the damage modifiers...
