Thread: New Ranger seeking guidance
Ok......Need some sage advice from you more experienced Rangers.
Just decided to go Ranger versus SL or BH. What planet is the Ranger trainer on? Also, if yu were starting over what 2-3 things would yu pass along to me to assist me in my development. For example, I am Marksman and could go either rifleman, carbineer or pistoleer. Whats best, Rifle?
Also, any tips on how yu arrange your panels to assist yu in the field? Or combinations of skills yu use in hunting? I have read some posts so have a sense on some of the special skills.....
Thanks in advance and looking forward to it!
Ranger trainer is in Coronet on Corellia...take shuttleport b i think...and head to the closestexit out of the city..the ranger trainer is there ( i think it is near the hotel )
I use pistol and really like it. I am 2 branches in the Pistoleer field and it helps alot. I use pets as well so that is a bonus.

Ya know, they could have picked a more "Ranger"-like city...
LOL! When I saw the one on Corellia, I thought the same thing. Personally, I love the one in Nashal. Talus as a whole feels very "Ranger" to me.. as does Rori and the advanced planets.

I think we have trainers in Coronet and Mos Espa. The Coronet Trainer is sw of the Starport I beleive, along the edge of the city under a tent. You cant miss his campfire. I do not remember where in Mos Espa though, I rarely travel there.
For weapons, thats a hard choice. I chose Carbineer. I use the actionshot2 to bleed when fighting with my pet or legshot2 a couple of times to kneecap them. It depends on your play style. Rifles will do more mind damage, Carbines action damage and pistols health damage.
Skill boxes... I chose the hunting tier over wayfaring to get the creature to hit and harvesting bonuses. Trapping and Survival will come along on their own just from playing. I love my Hunt Master title!
Keep Maskscent hotkeyed and always up is my best advice. I love to explore and rarely use shuttles when traveling on the same planet. Maskscent has saved me countless times. I constantly find myself face to face with critters who otherwise would be tearing me apart but do not notice me due to my maskscent.
Oh, and congrats on your decision to join us ![]()
Ohhh! Thanks Sol! I didnt know about the trainer in Nashal. Talus is my new home and I flew all the way back to Corellia to train my Hunting IV last night ![]()
For starters your weapon of choice is just that, a choice. Pick what is fun to you. some have gone rifle to look more hunter/ranger like, other pistol because its the main weapon that is actually working right now and still others carbine. Its really up to you. Eventually when all the bugs and tweeks / nerfs stop it may make a difference what weapon you use, but not now really.
My toolbar is set up F1 bleed 1 and 2 macro, F2 body shot x2 and warning shot macro, F3 single body shot, F4 single warning shot, F5 peace, F6 P-dart trap, F7 debuff trap, F8 root trap, F9 my weapon, F10 stimpak B, F11 mask scent, F12 burst run.
That toolbar isnt the best set up in the world but it works for me. I'm sure others here can tell you how theirs are and you can pick n choose. I also have the 'shift' F1-12 toolbar set up but it is mainly support items like forage, heal damage, heal action etc. You set it up how you want and what works for you.
The only tip I can offer is that using mask scent, those 3 traps I have listed in my toobarwith bleedshots and you can take down MOST things solo. Alot depends on your skills in trapping and with your weapon. Don't go thinking you are invincible but you can hold your own in the wilds.
I always have mask scent up, it takes the critters a minute to actually locate you once you start shooting. Position yourself at extreme range for your traps/weapon and in a way that if an add comes it wont be the whole spawn. Throw the p-dart and debuff traps, open with the bleed shots, body shot 2 macro, root trap and continue the blasting til dead. (the creature, not you) I try to hold onto my root traps for emergencies, like adds or if i am gettin beat up. After awhile you know which critters actually need to be trapped and which ones dont. Most you can kill just by bleeding them andshooting. Trail and error til you find what works.
Again my ways are the best ways or the only way. Read around, pick up pointers from other people and the other weapon type boards (pistoleer etc). Have fun andgood luck.
There is a Ranger Trainer in Mos Entha, Tatooine along the outer West wall.
Scout Phecnecine Darts give you the best bang for your buck, at the moment.
I use Rifles exclusively. If you use the phec darts correctly or have a tough pet. you will have no problem taking out even the toughest beasts. I have died only twice (both due to server lag poping me in the middle of creature lairs) since I started playing, that would be since Launch, so rifles must be pretty good. ![]()
Stock up on each type of hide, meat and bones on your base planet. You never know when a wandering doctor will happen by and they are Always happy to buy large quantities of Herbivoir and Avian meats, Bristley hides, and Armorsmiths appearently want Scaley hides. I havent yet found a need for bones from the other professions.
Thats all I can think of at the moment, hope it helps.
There's also, if I recall, a Ranger trainer on the edge of town in Kaadaara(sp?) on Naboo. And a trainer on the edge of town on Rori, in the town of Narmle.
As for tips, hmm. Traps can give you a nice little edge, but remember not to get trap happy when soloing. They have a long delay to throw, and do no, or almost no, damage. It's not worth taking an extra hardbeating to get off 1 or 2 more traps, unless you're out there specifically for trapping xp. Just use 1 or 2 and focus on the killing.
Also, if you happen to be melee, you can use traps to pull mobs from a distance, much like using a ranged weapon.
Always try to know, even just roughly, what the area you're in 'looks' like. Have a mental picture of where lairs and mobs are near you, which direction the nearest town is, etc. This will help you immensely if you need to make a run for it, as burst running sometimes get you into more trouble than you started in. If you're having trouble getting your bearings, try making a waypoint to town, and using that as a sort of 'orientation' arrow on your screen.
And like the poster above said, mask scent on, always. Especially for ranged weapon users. It will buy you a few more free shots. And let you run around much more easily.

Im sure you already know this, but throw multiple traps at creatures, each succesful hit is additional trapping XP. You can re-throw trap ince the creature has shaken off the effects. I was hitting the Scharnaff bulls (SP?) on Corellia for 464xp each hit. Also, while camping, do surveying or something that makes you xp, I can often max the camping xp in 15 minutes by surveying (killing two bird with one stone).
Taelana:
I did exactly the opposite of you, I was in Corellia/Coronet but I couldnt find a Ranger Trainer for Novice Ranger. I looked up the locations of them on www.swgalxies.net but Iit only listed the four (Naboo, tatooine, Talus, and Rori). On the bright side it got me off Corellia, and I agree with you, Talus just seems like a Ranger planet. I really like the native flora and fauna there.

Thanks guys (and girls) great advice I appreciate it immensely! I start tonite....hope to see some of ya'll on Gorath!
I've noticed since the last patch that maskscent does not indicate any scout xp....is this a perm change? Also, is there a combination of materials yu guys have seen that makes the best traps? (Amazing Success?)
Again thanks ya'll!
