Thread: Petition for raised caps

The caps need to be raised again. People have cities they want to start, others have cities they want to advance. Nothing like being completely stuck without any hope for a future. If nothing else just raise the cap on Naboo, Tatooine, and Corellia. Some of the cities are well trafficed, and have a need for facilities such as shuttleports, despite the cap. With the imperial crackdown there will be increased city useage. It is about time to let us move up a bit.

Please sign if you agree.

I agree they need to raise the caps, hell, I don't think there really should be caps if you want to be fair to every player and group who play now and will play in the future. The problem is this. The servers cannot handle more cities in terms of bandwidth and server resources. The database is bloated and cities are a huge killer of system resources, hence all the zoning bugs and poofing items in cities.

When a city is in existance, the code for the city appears to try and continually calculate where every object on that planet is in relationship to the city. You know those little messages you get when you hit a city boundary? That is the server calculating where you are in relationship to the city.

More cities means more server resources used up, and more lag for everyone. As the developers add more and more to the game (crackdown etc), the game gets slower and slower and slower until it becomes unuseable.

It's regrettable that players cannot have the cities they want or deserve, and yes, everyone has equal right to set up a city, but the servers just cannot handle it at all. The addition of the crackdown code this week caused serverwide lag on Wanderhome with 300+ stormtroopers invading Mos Entha and it will only get worse.

In the leadup to the December 16, 2003 patch putting a cap on player cities, the developers had discussed server resources and the fact that the current system could not handle more cities. They even tested varying city caps on at least one of the live servers. They admit the system's limitations and have come up with no solutions except to further lag the server with the crackdown.

Sadly, it's unlikely that groups who want larger cities will get them.

Disagree.

We don't need people starting new cities. We need people joining existing cities or trying to take them over. There are no politics. Go out and join an existing city. Get to know people get in the militia, then run for mayor and make an existing city your city.

I also disagree, I think the cap is fine. Even as I type cities are going thruogh problems with keeping people. I think you should try ot join a city. Run for mayor. Take it over. There are things in the game that make it possible. To just say everyone or guild deserves a city is crazy. I have a city on the verge of going Rank 5, not sure if I can get, but a few days ago we were on the verge of going Rank 3. It happens. Cities will crumble and new ones will grow in its place.

I can understand your frustration with being limited by the caps, but I think raising them would do more harm than good. Even if they allowed rank III cities to have shuttleports, the game would be totally broken. If every city was allowed to advance to rank V, then there would be a ridiculous glut of cities and shuttleports, which would totally remove the need to explore.

Every tom, **edit**, and harry who wanted their own city would just make one. You can't treat cities like guilds. Cities are meant to be a community of people who don't have to know each other in order to stay there. I would be against lifting the cap, but I know where you are coming from.

I am prone to ignoring people who I find annoying, both in the game and on the forums. If it seems like I am not responding to your posts, it is probably because you have very little worth saying.

I already have a city, and it is getting quite large. The problem is that we are stuck not being able to advance because of the caps. If people don't want more cities, then allow for cities to advance beyond level 3. If you want more people in existing cities, then give people a reason to go to those cities. Cities that cannot advance beyond level 3 will fall off the map because there is no incentive in terms of a shuttleport to get people there. That being the case it will stagnate and die, or be forced to move, then someone will fill that spot and the problem will repeat itself.

If we don't want more cities, then so be it. At least let the existing ones get the levels without capping on them. The only addition we would add to the servers in terms of a city (because we already have close to 100 people) is a single shuttleport and a wider border to space things out a little better.
