Thread: Eminent Domain... Help mayors clean up there cities!

I'm sure this is not a new idea, but given several concerns that are poping up (the 6 weeks removal of residency, rouge militia granting zoning rights to greifers, greif structures at the edge of town preventing expansion, etc.) How about giving Mayors the ability to remove any structure within city limits?

There would need to be a safe guard though. I'm thinking a good functionality would be to give mayors the keys to the city so that they can enter and access any structure (and can not be banned from a structure)and allowing them in invoke Eminent domain via a structures control panel. Once invoked the owner of the structure has 10 days to move out or the structure is destroyed. Why 10 days? First it would give time to move out so that greifing via destroying stored property or resource righ hoppers isn't a viable greif. And second, if a mayor goes bonkers it gives time for the residents to elect a new one. Also plenty of time for the mayor to cancel the desicion.

Any one else think this would be viable or if I'm missing something here?

This would be a really nice griefing tactic for the mayors. It has been seen in the past that it's nearly impossible to vote a mayor out who wants to be voted otu in most cities because of inactive players and such. A mayor who wanted to be a jerk could do this to everyone in the city 3 days before election, giving people only 3 days to get rid of him, because the rest of the 10 days would be used up before the next election.

Our city has 4 or 5 houses owned by inactive players that we would love to get rid of. But you have to be careful with anything added to the game. Some players intentionally want to try and use everythign to grief other players. The devs have to think of every scenario now when they code something to make sure it can't be misused.

I don't disagree that something need to be added, but how do we add something like this without it being used for the wrong reasons?

Never a good idea to let a player destroy someones house.

Lets start small and move up from there:

1. Allow Mayors to see who owns a specific structure.

2. Allow Mayors to fine tune positioning, rotate houses, maybe move 10-20 meters to get them in proper alignment.

3. Allow mayors to condem/mark for removal houses. After 30 days house is warped to closest buildable spot outside of town.

Id be happy if we could just get number 1. Then if it took a few months let us have #2. Some day #3 would be awesome.

the warping is a damned good idea infact thats all good ideas if you ask me, but i do wonder just how hard that would be to code, also even if its relatively easy to code i then have to wonder just how buggy that could be i mean one wrong move and the city explodes almost literally

ive said it elsewhere on these boards, a fantastic idea (someone else unfortunatly) came up with which was to only allow a maximum of 6 weeks maintenance to be paid on a structure so if they dont log on for 6 weeks the house goes poof anyway and if they are in full possession of these facts before hand (in game email from the devs) then there can be no excuse.

I think something has to be done. I would like for the Mayor to be able to do something, ANYTHING to get rid of trouble. This is a good proposal, but doubt any action will come of it.

I've now got a citizen who switched faction and is hard core on the other side and we can do nothing to get rid of him. And he was part of the militia and we can't boot him from that either. Why does the Mayor have NO POWER? We need to be able to get rid of trouble, via this propsal AND bring back /citywarn in some useful manner.

As a Rank 5 Mayor, I oppose eminent domain. It would be abused; it is more power than we should have.

Even the right to enter without the owner's permission is something that should not be granted.

I fully support (and have separately asked for)for a "Civic Status" command - it would appear on the radial menu of the house sign or the structure/factory housing. This would tell the Mayor (1) who owns the structure and (2) what its maintenance pool or damage level is. I think we're entitled to know that and it would certainly help us run our cities.

Yes, it's possible for people to change their loyalties, to turn against you etc, and remain citizens. But you know what, that's politics. You can't eliminate it without creating totalitarianism.

You want to be a Politician, BE a Politician. Persuade people.

PS There are other measures that I would support, like a tax surcharge for non-citizens.

I'm not a politician, the city I live in has a great mayor. But in talking with him one day I had an idea on this situation. Selective property taxes. If someone has a house, factory, and or harvesters, hitting them with a 10k per week per structure might get them to move them out of the city or join and have the taxes lifted.

I think the idea about the mayor having more control over things, such as removing someone from the militia andbeing able to see who owns a particular structure, would be needed.

As far as city layout, I'm not so sure letting a mayor move structures is a good idea, that would seem to be a coding nightmare if the structure in question has lots of items. However, perhaps the coding wouldn't be so tough to allow mayors to designate no-build zones though. As it is right now, if a mayor wants main and side streets laid out, they have to tell people not to place structures in those areas. But if they could designate areas as no-build zones, city layout would be much easier.

Just my few cents.

I believe giving us the ability to evict people woudl be a useful feature. I think the time should be more like 14 days tho, and they should get regular emails, every day about it. I think the *least* they can do is let us see the owners of structures and harvs and factories. An eviction option willallow me to remove a couple houses by people who have either quit SWG all together, or who have switched servers. Leftover credits in the maint pool get put back in the owners bank, and the house is gone. We have a couple small houses blocking the growth of our market. No luck fiinding out the owner. Really puts a kink into the city plans.

But right now the thing I'm most worried about is lack of Dev attention.
