Thread: Why are tax revenues so much lower than maintenance?

I just got ellected to mayor and I'm trying to balance the budget so to speak. I have 45 citizens so I should be bringing in 90k per citiezen plus real estate taxes. But maintenance is about 300k. So this leads me to a couple of questions:

1) How is realestatetax calculated?

2) Is the citizen tax collected even if the player never logs in?

3) How on earth am I supposed to bring in enough tax money to pay the maintenance?

At this point we have no shuttle (I'm trying to get it back by added a few citizens) and I'm not sure how many citizens are still active. I am currently funding the town out of my own pocket and it's getting expensive. Please help.

I am running a city with 40 citizens and we actually have a surplus in the city budget each and every week. Taxes are pulling in around 180k per week (2k income tax and 25% property tax). The key is to not spend more than you have. My city is Rank 3, which means I can have a bank, garage, clone center, and some decorations placed. However, that doesn't mean I place everything I can. I have a bank and garage placed and some streetlamps, but I haven't placed my clone center yet. Why? Because while you can place a clone center with 35 citizens, my city won't have enough surplus money in the treasury till we have around 40-42 citizens.

What you definitely have to do is go through your city and start adding up costs. Gardens are 10k, 20k, and 30k for small, medium, and large gardens. Garages and Clone Centers are both 20k a week. Specializations are usually around 80k and up. Don't forget that trainers, mission terminals, fountains, and statues are 1.5k each per week (which really adds up if you have a lot of them).

If you haven't already, I'd suggest you go and download the budget spreadsheet that is in the Polotician FAQ sticky and use it to see where you are spending most of your money at. If you ever want to achieve a balanced budget, you definitely have to see where your money sinks are. Once you do that, you can decide what structures/decorations you can temporary eliminate to help keep the budget manageable. I pride myself on the fact that my city runs entirely on taxes, especially when so many people doesn't think it is possible. True, my city doesn't have all the luxuries that some larger cities have, but my city will in time as it gains more citizens.

Real estate tax is a percentage tax (set at the City Hall terminal) that gets added into a structures normal maintenance. Say you have a 10 credit per hour structure with a 10% property tax--the maintenance becomes 11 credits per hour with the 10% going to the city treasury.

Citizen tax is collected regardless of player log in. It gets collected at various times throughout the week, though, not on one set day. In my city some people get it taken out on Sundays, others on Tuesdays, others on Thursdays, etc. I believe that it has something to do with when you actually placed the structure. Regardless, the money goes to the city treasury and the structure owner receives an e-mail when the tax is taken out.

It's very difficult to cover costs with taxes alone. Part of the problem is that sales tax--which could be a major source of income for many cities--is broken. The only other tax options you have are shuttle and garage fees (which are sometimes a bit buggy in and of themselves). Take a look at what structures you have, what is taking the most maintenance and so on. You may need to pull decorations/specializations or find a source of donations to the treasury.

City hunts and other events could be organized with the proceeds going to the treasury. We've set up a special sale vendor that citizens donate items to and the profit all goes into the treasury when the item is sold (the merchant manually has to deposit the cash, but it's nota problem with a trustworthy merchant).
