Thread: TIPS FOR RUNNING A TAX-FREE UTOPIA
Yeah, a Shuttle that is very near a POI is guaranteed to rake in the credits.
I work for a non-profit on Earth and have learned a thing or two about getting donations.
For the focus of this discussion, I am going to assume your city has a shuttle and can at least make 100cr per ticket sold. While technically having the 100cr fee is still a tax, it is perhaps the most worthwhile and directly applicable of all the taxes. Using some of these tips, you may soon find yourself with enough money to remove the shuttle tax.
COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR COMMUNITY
The first thing to do is make sure you have an open relationship with your citizens. You should have every citizen on your friends list so you can easily send e-mails to all of them. Your e-mails should include resource waypoints, citizen announcements, upcoming events, bugs that may severly affecting your town and anything else they will find important.
Answer every reply you get from your citizens. Even if its only a short thank you. Remember, their ideas are never bad - they may not be feasable or you may be unable to help in certain situations, but you always need to listen.
IDENTIFY THE WEALTHIEST MEMBERS OF YOUR TOWN
You need to befriend the richest members of your city. Offer them gardens in front of their homes, or statues in their honor. These can be thebenefits for large donations of 100k - 1000k or more.
Hold an event where you unveil the new statue/structure.
Offer to place a beautiful garden directly in front of a PA Hall in return for a weekly payment from the PA.
IDENTIFY WEALTHY AND BORED PLAYERS OUTSIDE OF TOWN
I allready have two players who have written our town in their virtual wills. I promised to place a fountain or statue in their honor or in their memory, if they donate a large amount of their credits and/or resources to the city when they leave the game.
Someone who has a Holocron may be convinced to donate it to your city. You could then hold an auction and invite players from all over the Galaxy.
ORGANIZE LARGE GROUP HUNTS WITH ALL PROCEEDS GOING TO THE CITY
As one of your monthly city events, coordinate a large hunt and encourage everyone to donate as much of their earnings into the city coffers.
You could also ask each member of the hunt to donate their monthly share of city expenses (which for most cities is 15-20k)
BE CHARISMATIC, AND FOR GOODNESS SAKE GET HELP!
Do not try to manage the city all by yourself. You will need to have a strong militia leader and a strong city planner/assistant (also on the militia). These people can take care of zoning issues and most other problems citizens might have.
They also help you by talking with the locals and finding out what their needs and opinions are. You may also want to hire certain citizens to scout for resource waypoints each week or to organize hunts.

Grrrr... So why isn't your city on Valcyn! I'm stuck in Mos Vegas where the mayor will never write back to me and where I have a 10% sales tax. The group hunts sound like a blast, and I wouldn't mind donating the hunt money to the city at all! Thats a great idea!
Anyone on Valcyn running an open city like this that gets lots of foot traffic? Send me a email!

These are some great ideas.
Tombra does several of these (we still have taxes, but they are low and we are a tiny little hamlet, only hitting Village this Friday), such as the group hunt and such. Charisma and getting the word out does help, and we are living proof: we got an anonymous donation from outside of the city for 1.5 million credits when someone on Scylla heard we were not going to be able to swing our city expenses. To this day we still have no idea who it was, and I wish they had Zabrak statues so we could place one in thier honor, since that's all we know from the e-mail.

Not really, there seems to ba a 'round trip' bug, i.e. if the traveller purchases a round trip ticket at an NPC shuttleport s/he is charged the proper amounts but the player city's surcharge never makes it into the city's coffers.

Some other ideas:
Create a Lead Surveyor position in your town. This person will be in charge of gathering together all the hot resource waypoints and mailing them out to all the citizens, or to all the citizens who sign up to be on the resource list. The Lead Surveyor should have a team of people working with them who are also gathering off-world waypoints to hot resources.
Shmooze with the local merchants. Merchants tend to know who has money and who doesn't on your server and will be helpful in locating potential donors.
