OK, I admit that I'm new to politician so if this has been asked time and time again, I apologize. I run a city on Bloodfin (for now at least) and we are a Metropolis. I've added some decroations etc to give the city a nicer feel to it. The city get's plenty of compliments from people and honestly I don't intend to add any more decorations as the city already cost 530K a week. So I ask, why can't I put down cement or paved streets like the NPC cities? This would be a great way to really give us a true city feeling.

It has indeed been asked about before, and it has been stated by the devs that it will never happen.

Basically, we won't see it because of technical issues...
Something like dynamic roads would cause a big(ger) performance hit when they need to be rendered and stuff.

ok, they rephrased that during this fanfest, although since this dev isn't GM I'm not sure how accurate it is (since he seems not to be familiar with why elections are 3 weeks.) they took down a few ideas on changing the ground textures in cities, but still pretty much stated that it's a huge technical problem and is pretty much impossible with the current system.

In simple terms in a NPC city the pavement is part of the same 'skin' that in come places is grass. In a Player city it would have to be a HUGE number of squares the size of one unit of area. On top of that the squares would have to have the ability to conform to the landscape - something no other player placed object is able to do. Thus you have two issues. 1) Lag ( objects loading ) and 2) techical.

Okay, I think I've come up with a perfect fix for the technical problem of paving roads. The mayor could use photoshop to draw roads on his town, then each citizen could print the map. Pressingthe map firmly on the screen would allow us to have our roads! Of course, it would function best if you could put it on some type of pinwheel device (I prefer a pencil poked through the paper) so that when you turn in-game the roads can go with you. Otherwise you'd have to drive in a straight line, and c'mon that would just be silly.

Hrmmm...I may be grasping here, but would it be possible for the city hall to have an effect such as that it re-textures the ground when it grows? So instead of having to plop down the roads, just simply re-texture the ground as it moves up the ranks. I guess it would be the same technology really as a camp, where it has pre-rendered textures to put in. Just a thought, and prolly never going to happen..... /sigh

Pappi posted something around here saying that the camp thing wasn't supposed to have made it into the game.

that's one of the ideas they took down at fanfest, and (personally) I think that's a great idea, however they did say it'll be hard to do with the technical difficulties.

another problem is how do you control what to pave. its one thing to cut a path from city hall to the bank and shuttle, personally tho id hate to get the option to pave roads and find out my scenic overlook to the lake from my houses balcony just turned into a parking lot view. as has also been stated the excess lag created would also scare me away from this idea, bria is slow enough on a good day. unless the roads can be loaded as one large single unit versus some form of model train track type object even a top vid card would choke at 1fps too long to be worth it imho

Could they not at least change the footprint of houses to represent a paved landscape? You know, the bit around a house where it exists, but the house model doesn't exist there.
