Thread: I can't believe they did this to us!

For the last two weeks I have been working hard to recuit citizens for our city in an effort to recruit 55 so we can get a shuttle port. During the last city update we received an e-mail that they are placing a cap on the number of cities on Naboo and Corellia. Thus, no shuttle port and all my hard work during the last two weeks in vain. It's a tremendous amount of work to move houses to Rori and we'd have to get new houses if we were to move to Talus.

Why wern't we notified earler about the cap? I could have spent the last two weeks doing other things! And now no shuttle port for the time being...

Can someone tell me why this was done?

The real reason I'm concerned isn't really about the cap. My real concern is what other surprises might I have? Can I look forward to working hard on other goals only to have them snubbed at the last minute and without notice?

Player city caps were placed on a patch on December 16, 2003. They were placed to protect the servers from massive lag caused by poor database setup and code causing more larger cities to lag the servers and make the servers crash. This was tested on test servers and the present cap system was put into place as the limits of what the servers could handle.

The caps are listed in the FAQ on this forum as well as in documentation on the website www.starwarsgalaxies.com. The caps are as follows:

Player Cities may not always advance to the next rank, even when the city population qualifies for the next rank. Many times, this may be due to the limits on the number of player cities allowable at each rank on each planet.

The new limits are as follows (The first number is the total cap. The second is how many can be rank 3 or above. The third is how many can grow to rank 4 or above.):

  • Corellia: 20, 15, 10
  • Dantooine: 50, 30, 20
  • Lok: 50, 30, 20
  • Naboo: 20, 15, 10
  • Rori: 50, 30, 20
  • Talus: 50, 30, 20
  • Tatooine: 20, 15, 10

As he said caps have been in forever. The FAQ on this board lists the cap information. Sorry, but it looks like you failed to do your research.

If was a surprise, then you didn't do your homework - this has been in place since Player Cities went live which is why there was such a race for people to establish them!

I'm not actually the Mayor of the city. Our guild was invited to this city to help them build the population. Thus, I havn't done much politician research since I'm not a politician.

I do appreciate the comments posted here. I usually do tremendous research before venturing on any endevors to ensure I know as much as I can to make the best decisions.

Again, thanks for the comments, they have been very helpful.

Oh man and what a race that was. I remember we had spent days working out the plans for placing the city hall, only to get foiled because our architecht could not log on

On Gorath, all three primary planets were at their cap within 15 minutes, so we ended up on Talus.

Our arch missed his shuttle back after training in Bestine (we're on Naboo). So he had to find another route to a shuttle that was "off time" and get back to Keren, so we could all gallop out 2km on newly trained mounts (courtesy of moi).

Was a very very tense time for us. We weren't first, but we weren't last either

Man, just thinking about that day makes me feel nostalgic. I remember how many people I ran into on Deeja Peake that day. Normally never see anyone there, but with the politician trainer the place was quite active

Remember how the servers were down for like 7 hours while they patched them that day? LOL the forums kept crashing because everyone was on them trying to figure out what was going on.

Hell yeah - fortunately that put it off so I could get home from work and log in asap when Starsider came up. Took me 4 tries before the game would load me in, and then we were off to the races!

The big 10 on every server keep getting accused of being no lifers who don't have jobs who managed to sit around on that day and get their city. I worked an 8 hr day and walked a mile to get home, and we got ours cuz we were ready. I'm glad the day delayed as long as it did or we might not have ours either.

New Dawn on Naboo (Bloodfin) became the 4th city build and became a Metropolis3 weeks later but lost it in late December and became a City again. We tried late January but was denied. We understood the rules and jus decided to stay a City. Then suddenly, a few weeks later we jus became a Metropolis. I don't know what attributed to this but we never looked back and now we're the largest city on Bloodfin (nearly 150 active citizens). We took a hit a week or so ago with the Inactives removal (lost 17).

But all I'm saying is that don't lose hope. Another City Ranked PC will lose its position and you can slide right on in as a city.. and get your shuttleport.

Yep, that was about the most exciting day in SWG history. Remember how TH and Q-3PO Said it would likely take weeks for the planets to hit their city caps? TH was especially out of touch when he made comments indicating that it would take time to gather the resources, build the parts, find a suitable location, and actually place the city hall.

I had logged out the night prior in front of the Bestine Capital, and our Architect logged out on top of the proposed city site with a pocket full of parts, and a structure factory close by, just in case.

I have pretty loose work hours, and live close to work. I got my Archi buddy on chat as soon as I got to my work place. Once he told me the servers were loading, I dashed home and sat down just in time to see the server switch to "on-line." I logged on and started frantically looking around for the political trainer. As luck would have it, I had spawned inside the trainer! That's why I could not find him right away. I lucked out on the shuttle, and was running the 3.5K from Mos Eisly to Mos Onarok in no time. Meanwhile, I had got the word from our archi that the hall was finished. We were going to MAKE IT!

Then disaster struck. I dropped my connection to SWG, and nothing could seem to get me logged in again. I still had our Archi on chat, so I gave him my log on data. He was able to log on, finish the run, and place the hall.

The next suprise came when we figured out that all the pre-possitioned house owners had to actually step into the houses to give birth to the city. We managed that in the next few moments, and had one of the first cities on the server. The cap on each of the planets was reached in 10-15 minutes.

The best thing is how the developers didn't want us to know about that little gem and plinka got in trouble for telling us. Just imagine the uproar if noone was told that? Come home from work expecting to get your outpost and all of a sudden you couldn't and noone knew why...man that would have been worse the the first day's loading problems and the flame posts/threats would go back 4 pages.
