If it is such a chore and you see nothing good in it - why do you do it? I am a politician, have been for over a year and I LOVE IT. Yeah it is work and yes I put alot of my own money into funding the city - however the rewards of politician is great - that is if you look at politician as a way to serve your fellow players. Politician is about growing a city - the marvel of going from a 10 person outpost - to the day you qualify for your own shuttleport. It is for having events in the city and having a large turnout and watching EVERYONE have fun - and you having fun because the event was successful. Being a politician is about listening to citizens gripes, hopes and dreams for their city.
This profession or the game for that matter - are what you make of it - nothing less - nothing more. Oh I also wish they would have more features - reports etc that were available - but they don't at the moment, however, I don't feel it makes the profession worthless - just challenging.
BTW if your approaching politician from a "whats in it for me" viewpoint - might be better to pick another profession because politician is about the giving - and serving.
My humble 2 cents.

I am a relatively new Politition, an I see this profession as being incredibly useful. You are put in a position to serve your city, to help all of the people who reside within it's borders. The skills in the skill trees are not going to allow you to accomplish this, it is the appoach that is taken that will determine the outcome.

Actually being an active politician is rewarding in itself. You get to work to build something that very few people get to achieve in the game, especially if you spend a lot of time working on developing your city and keeping it organized. I'm one of the original politicians on Eclipse and since cities were introduced I'd have to say I redesigned the layout of my city at least 50 times. Helping it become and stay a metropolis was also a rewarding experience. It’s interesting to do, you get to keep people interested in your city and you get to be creative and create something that others can not only see but interact with on a daily basis. As long as you put the effort into the city it will be rewarding for you.

As has been previously stated. Politician is a profession for people that like to help others. Building the community and making sure that the community serves the needs of its members is what being a politician is all about. The reward is knowing that your community is fun for 100's of players. I get a real kic out of seeing my city full of people, and then going outside the borders and finding another 50 houses where people choose not to be a citizen but enjoy the benefits of the community. While this might anger some folks -- in that people are free loading -- I find it a great compliment in that people see value in the community outside of being a citizen and paying taxes. They associate with the community quietly and enjoy what it has to offer.
I love being a Mayor/Politician. I only wish that the master politician box gave us something to be happy about other than the title.
Cheers!

They're using the shuttle (one of the few revenue sources that works) and bringing in others that also use the shuttle.
