Thread: Balancing Business and the GCW what does your city do?

Our city has a very active crafting community. We also have many who enjoy PVP. We have two faction bases within the city radius.

We have many debates on how to balance these two interests, so that the city is fun for everyone. For example, our shuttle and cloning center are in the town center, and so is our shopping district. Our PVP'ers want to place minefields in these strategic locations to defend our bases against attacks. But our crafters are not thrilled about their customers stepping off the shuttle and getting blown up.

I try to see both sides, but would like feedback from other mayors on how they are handling these kinds of issues.

Thx.

well.. unfortnately.. once you have faction bases.. it is hard to be "neutral" in a city... minefield a shuttleport is usually the 1st line of defense against a raid of your faction bases. Thus it is crucial to defense, but this will deter customers....

The only "work around" is to built a perimeter of defense around the faction base (more work) but that leave the shuttleport defenseless

it is a tough one that you ahve to work with your citizens.....

our crafters are the same faction as our town imperial.

I can't really give an answer to your questions because my city is neutral and very focues on the merchant/crafter side of things. I can defintely say though that we host a LARGE number of merchants and crafters who belong to factioned cities but just run shops in our city because it is so much more profitable for them.

This works great for me, even though many of our shops are not even run by citizens of the city. The tax base we can draw from is nigh on ridiculous - a 1% sales tax brings in over 500 million credits per day (and this number is rising). Turning on the small sales tax for one day basically pays our maintenence for the week at a very small cost to our citizens.

We are a neutral city but many citizens are asking for Faction Terminals. How have the Mayor's of other neutral cities addressed this issue?

If the vote moves that we place the terminals, I will yank them if our city turns into a war zone, or if defensive structures begin appearing on the edges of our Metropolis. The intention would be to place them on opposite ends of the city in the industrial zones.

Crystal Valley's city council on the Chilastra server has had this discussion for quite some time. The past two times that it was brought up, the council voted no to put up faction scanners and mine fields inside the city. There are very many cities that actually do place mine fields and faction scanners near their cloning facility and shuttleport. Though they have the right to do so to protect their city from unwanted guest, but it also tends to grief non-pvp players. I have many covert Imp friends and I am a rebel. If my city placed a faction scanner and mine fields near the shuttleport, he would be killed instantly or at least wounded if no other rebels were around. Because our shuttle is right next to our commercial district, we did not want to hurt the merchants, for many of their customers are imperial.

We do not tolerate overt imps and will attack on sight (for obvious reasons) but it has been a constant policy that Crystal Valley will not attack covert imps and they are free to enter and leave the city. Though our city would be left undefended, it also dissolves all possible griefing problems and poor attitudes by immature imps.

However, Crystal Valley is a rebel city, and you may ask well if you are rebel why are we allowing covert imps around the city? You must remember that covert imps, though covert are still neutral. Any covert faction should be considered neutral and nothing more. We do have bases outside our city that is defended by faction scanners and mine fields but it is far enough away to not affect our city by any means.

"a 1% sales tax brings in over 500 million credits per day "

Hope that was a typo lol. I have trouble imagining 50 BILLION credits being spent in trade in one day in ANY city lol.

Not to make light of the tight situation you have found you in, but I have a simple question you can ask yourself to get the answer to this problem from:

Do you pay city maintenance with taxes from sales, or with faction points from people blown to bits at the shuttleport?

Riverbend is a factional city, not a factional battlefield. In a RP sense, it would be insane to place a base in the middle of a city, as it would endanger the citizens whose freedom we were fighting for. Our city is just that, a city; A place for living, relaxing, socializing, and engaging in commerce. We have strict laws and rules of engagement that have been tested and proven by our militia. Crafters don't have to fear that a battle will interfere with commerce, because there is no strategic value to our city. Our guild is a part of the city, but does not run it, the citizens do. Our constitution does not prohibit military installations within the city, but it is doubtful that our citizens would ask for any either. So, in answer to your question, our citizens make the decisions, not the guild or guild leader or even the mayor for that matter. Since the citizens of Riverbend have not chosen to place a base within our city, we've avoided the complications associated with them.

The city i live in is neutral.

I did go to a city that had surronded there shuttle port with a mine field. I didn't bother to go to the vendor i was looking for just caught the next shuttle and left.

I just assumed the merchants there wanted to sell only to there own faction, but then again maybe not.
