I thought it would be a good idea to see how cities stack up to each other... and to get a few ideas for my own city:
How many Citizens in your city:
What are your taxes?
Income:
Property:
Sales:
Is your city Beutified? (do you have a large ammount of fountains... parks...)
Is your city run off of donations? (do you make less money in taxes than the city spends)
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket?
Has your City hit its Plateu? (are you gaining citizens at this time?)
And finnaly:
What are your tips for increasing growth, turning a profit... and any other helpfull tips you might have for a newbie mayor:

How many Citizens in your city:
68 at the moment, but growing everyday
What are your taxes?
Income: 2,000c
Property: 15%
Sales: 0%
Is your city Beutified?
Yes, Very. I have the max number of decs (give or take a few lightposts for eviction notices)
Is your city run off of donations?
At this time yes. We have 2,600,000 in the treasury, and that will last us about ten weeks with the current citizen count. Though we are trying to find a way to balance the budget. Without taking out decorations... or increasing taxes (good luck on that one!)
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket?
Other than the few that have been donated by citizens, I have payed for all of the decs out of my own pocket. I have never used city funds to purchase anything but the original 20k to furnish the City hall
Has your City hit its Plateu?
I started a recruitment drive last week... since then we are growing by 2-4 citizens per day. SO no not yet.
What are your tips for increasing growth, turning a profit... and any other helpfull tips you might have for a newbie mayor:
Play politician. I take my role as mayor very seriously. I devote 3-6 hours every day to being mayor. On the weekends as much as nine. I manage everything I can in my city. Zoning is done to a T... I have officers who take care of recruitment, and the militia... we have weekly events with great prizes... basically give your citizensa reason to pay taxes in your city! Hold swoop races, fight tourneys... RP events (if that is what you are in to)... and when all esle fails, always Poll your citizens... every week send them a poll with their top two concerns/priorities for the city... and do your best to work on those issuse that week. This has really helped to give me direction in my city... that and the long weekly update I send out every week. Also, try polling every week or two asking how you are doing as mayor. People will tell yout he good and the bad... put (C) under comments for each of your citizens and this will allow you to send a quick e-mail to all citizens... I add a second (M) next to that for militia members...
Anyone have more great tips?

How many citizens: 125
What are your taxes?
Income: 500cr
Property: 10%
Sales: 3%
Is your city Beutified? (do you have a large ammount of fountains... parks...)
We could have more than our 10 gardens, but at the moment they are enought ... but we met the cap with decorations (mostly streetlamps to mark the streets we have created)
Is your city run off of donations? (do you make less money in taxes than the city spends)
It used to be run off of the taxes, but with a lot of citizens now hologrinding and not having their vedors equipt the important sales tax doesn't kick in. We're still months away from loosing all our saved (and donated) money, so I'm confidint that we'll get back on the financial track soon.
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket?
No, I understand the city as a projekt of all citizens. We have collected 20k from each citizen to create a small bond between city and citizen (they've invested) and to pay for the initial costs of city structures and decorations.
Has your City hit its Plateu? (are you gaining citizens at this time?)
There are still new citizens coming in every now and then, but the gain is steadily decreasing.
And finnaly:
What are your tips for increasing growth, turning a profit... and any other helpfull tips you might have for a newbie mayor:
Advertise your city by word of mouth, activly make your city allive with events, interact so people have fun being in your city thus buying products in your city (sales tax is the most important "regular" income) and might also become citizens (adding even more tax-money and their livelyhood).
[e] - forgot to mention number of citizens - [/e]

How many Citizens in your city:
34 and expanding rapidly.
What are your taxes?
Income: 0c
Property: 0%
Sales: 0%
Is your city Beutified?
Not yet, I gain the level in 2 days and will set about beautifying to the best of my ability.
Is your city run off of donations?
Absolutely. Donations and the occasional hunt.
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket?
Yep, as an architect ive built and paid for everything in the town, including 95% of the houses. If you want a town badly enough its a small sacrifice to make.
Has your City hit its Plateu?
Not even close, these are early days still with the city only 2 weeks old. We just got our cantina andhave a master doc lined up to place the hospital in a few days. Our good location should mean we can attract more and more people.
What are your tips for increasing growth, turning a profit... and any other helpfull tips you might have for a newbie mayor:
Still quite new to the politician thing but one clear tip for attracting new people is simply to make the time to talk to new people, dont turn your nose up at newbies, help them instead. If you have to give a small house to a newbie and pay his maintenance for the first week then 99% of the time by the end of that first week they will have got themselves settled into the game and be up and running, you will also by then have gained a grateful citizen who is loyal to your town and with luck a new friend. Another good tip is to try and spread out the skills of the citizens in your town. If you have citizens who cover most of the skills spectrum then when people need training or to buy something they can usually find someone in town to help them, this also helps build a feeling of community.
End of the day its not a difficult job, just be nice to people and generally they will enjoy being in your town and want to stay and help make the place good.

Darkfire Metropolis (-40, -460) Central Tatooine
How many Citizens in your city: 135
What are your taxes?
Income: 0
Property: 10%
Sales: 5%
Is your city Beautified? Yes - we have lots of gardens, fountains, statues, etc..
Is your city run off of donations? No, the city is entirely self-financing due to the high number of tourists (we are in the middle of the planet) and the high concentration of Artisans in the city.
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket? No, the city has nearly 8 millioncredits inreserves and is cash-positive.
Has your City hit its Plateu? No, we continue to grow and gain citizens, especially from other cities that are failing. We have seen some earlier citizens who no longer play disappearing, but at a slower rate than new people are coming on-board.
What are your tips for increasing growth, turning a profit... and any other helpful tips you might have for a newbie mayor:
1. Location, location, location - if you put your city too close to an existing city, or in an uninteresting location, it will not survive. Also make sureyou chose an attractive location - a flat piece of land is pretty boring and doesn't inspire character - our city is in the mountains broken up by ravines and hills, but people love it! For example, in our galaxy one of the first cities was placed just outside Bestine... it is now down to a Village because it is easier to live outside.
2. Focus on getting lots of Artisans in your city - people will come to your city to buy weapons, armour, etc.. and it is that that will often get people to move to your city. Our city was built on trade, like all great cities - I sometimes scratch my head when I visit other cities and wonder how they intend to make money and fund the city in the long-run.
3. Newbies are your life-blood - be prepared to invest heavily in newbies to help them get up to speed. Some of our greatest citizens are people I found wandering around Mos Eisley wondering what to do with their melon!
4. Be prepared for the work - being a mayor of a major city is one of the most difficult roles to perform, but it can be very rewarding. Be prepared for constant tells, lots of complaints, issues, people needing help and generally having to forget your other skills and professions until your city is up to speed. You WILL become the servant of the people if you get it right. If you don't, your city will not grow.
5. Be tough. There will be lots of people who come into your city wanting to get free houses, zoning rights, etc.. Be ruthless in dealing with people who rip you off, and NEVER give zoning rights, other than to people your trust implicitly. It is much better to place houses for people.
6. Communicate! Speak to your citizens on a regular basis and make sure that they know what is going on. Some people will not visit the city often, and your emails will keep them up to speed.
7. Develop a Community Spirit - You must develop a community spirit to survive and thrive. If there is no sense of community, then people will readily leave to live elsewhere. Make sure your Cantina is populated, that you have no GHOST citizens - nothing is worse than an empty city with no life or soul.
Hope some of you find that useful!
Yours,
Bim_Azul

For the city of Port Agrilat, Corellia, on the Bloodin server
How many Citizens in your city:
about 75
What are your taxes?
we are tax free, and run solely on donations from private citizens and our three reisdent PAs
Is your city Beutified? (do you have a large ammount of fountains... parks...)
Our city is set up as a collection of "neighborhoods", and each neighborhood is decorated with specially named streetlamps, gardens or fountains based on how well the neighborhood is organized. Tha's the plan anyway. We still have a lot houses scattered here and there, but we are working with those reisdents who are willing. Due to our interesting terrain, which includes plateaus, gullies, flats, and swampland, we are able to have a good deal of variety in our city, and I do my best to work with that.
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket?
I am a lucky mayor. Whenever I ask for donations, they come flooding in. Our treasury remains at four weeks reserve due to the attention paid by our citizens. Whenever I mention that I need money for imporvements, I get tenfold my request. I have been given donations of a million credits more then once. I mention this not as a boast, but to show that step one of building a city is having the respect of your citizens.
Has your City hit its Plateu? (are you gaining citizens at this time?)
We don't openly recruit for the city, but we still gain about 5 citizens per week due to additions to our PAs. We have three PAs in our city, and they do most of the recruiting for me.
What are your tips for increasing growth, turning a profit... and any other helpfull tips you might have for a newbie mayor:
My tip would be not to be too concerned with growth. A good small city is better then a bad big city. This is easy for me to say, of course, at tier four, but what is most important is to make the best with what you can get.
As has been mentionend before, location is very important. There should be something about your city which sets it apart. Our city is adjacent to a PvP Battlefield. We think we are now ready once the Battlefields are re-activated to have it become the center of Corellia PvP. Find somewhere of importance, and grow there.

Is your city Beutified?
A few fountains, lots of streetlamps, max trainers and a good selection of mission terminals
Is your city run off of donations?
So.So last week i had to add 100k of my own money, I have since adjusted the taxes and so far on course for a break even.
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket?
I wasnt always mayor, but as a master architect I built alot of city structures at a huge discount, I also built the shuttleport for free, the bank for free, and the city mall for free. I furnished the city hall/mall/cantina/hospital with my own resources for free. I think some people have donated 10-20k to various things, and some people have donated small city items.
Has your City hit its Plateu?
Not yet, We have been getting a steady rate of citizens each week, we have 2 PA's and are recruiting new people all the time. I purchased some very cheap ore and will sell houses at a huge discount to start a huge promotion in the next few weeks.
What are your tips for increasing growth, turning a profit... and any other helpfull tips you might have for a newbie mayor:
Being a politician is a great profession, not many people are mayors so alot of stuff is done on your own with no advice. Be nice to everyone, help anyone in any way you can, small gestures go along way and players dont forget you if you have given them help. Let the citizens have an imput to the city, even if you dont take them up on the suggestion, listning to them will help alot. About 25% of our citizens have come from recomendations from people already in the city. Every good city needs a Mall. A city will be helped by a dominating PA too. Try to get other PA's as when they recruit players you get another citizen.
The center of the city is VERY important, a good setup for the center with easy access will bring lots of people there. Plan ahead, theres is nothing worse than having to ask people to move their house for a shuttleport, and if the player has left the game, you are stuck with a huge house where you dont want it.
Choose a good name, Something starwarsey. My city is called Mos Krayt, not original but certainly starwarsey. A city with the same name as a real city in america/europe doesnt have the appeal as a roleplaying city name. Look at the NPC cities on the planet, Try to use the same format or sounding names.

Moderately Beautified: One park, a few fountains, and a fair number of streetlights.
Is your city run off of donations? (do you make less money in taxes than the city spends)
Had a bit of a economic recession because of crafter turnover (Darn the Holocron to heck!) which brought a slight deficit to a larger one and now commerce is recovering. Taxes need a slight tweek to put it into the black.
Do you pay for the city items (parks, fountains...) out of your own pocket?
Yes

Has your City hit its Plateu? (are you gaining citizens at this time?)
Not at the Plateu. We still bring on new settlers from time to time. The urgency to get folks settled in ended after we got Tier IV although plans are in progress to bring on a new round of settlers.

The strength of the community is only realized when the community acts as a group and not as a bunch of individuals. Promote this aspect and you'll end up with a prosperous population with a good revenue.
My economic stimulus package has been to promote economies of scale. Match buyers and sellers of resources and ensuring that loaner harvesters are available for startups. Sellers can focus on a material making it easier and more efficient, the number of sellers provides for the number of required resources, and the crafting needs are easily met so they can produce more. Wealthy citizens consume and industrious crafters ensure stocked vendors which draws customers.
Factional strength comes through strategic placing of city resources and factiona l assets. Too much one way and commerce will suffer and too much another the base(s) wont' be secure.
My advice to a new Factional Mayor is to decide at the start if your a Militant or Economic mayor at the start. If you choose to be Militant be prepared for a spartan budget and go full tilt and build the city ground up with the factional assets integrated into the city. Economic oriented Factional Mayors would need to find the balance between commerce and factional security which would involve having the factional complex built on the outskirts of the city.
