Thread: WHY!!!
Why does everyone assume that a Player City is a Player Association endeavor? This is frustrating. I get questions as to "Is my guild going to do this.. and that" with my Player City. I explain the them that the Guild System on SWG is more along the lines of a Para-military structure with little to now democractic process or sense of community. What's even crazier is that people are so keen on getting a huge city quick. Guess what, I have no intention of wanting to build a city to be big. Perhaps it's my living in Alaska, or growing up in the Midwest that has given me a perspective on Large Cities, Mid-size towns, and tiny alaskan villages. I'd rather see something more along the lines of a Natural Growth, and not get 50 people together so they can have a Shuttleport ASAP.
I am starting a small pioneer type of town. It will be on Dantooine, and founded by Rangers.. We are not guilded, and many remain within their own Guilds. We arent PVP, since Rangers have no advantage in PVP.. but have the intention to play the Roll of ANtarian Rangers we were in hiding on Alderaan, recently fled before it was destroyed. Pretty much just a plot.. If someone can find our place, and make it there.. they are welcomed to live with us. Many feel this is a better way to go about it than forming an Organization or Guild of the sort... If, and when we begin the PVP thing.. why would I want a shuttle port? The bulk of our city income will probably from two areas.. My massive resource business, and hunting trips. Money isn't difficult to aquire in this game.
Here's the kicker.. because of our low key approach, and the whole Ranger Commradary, I already have close to 20 or so Rangers, and friends.. planning on moving. We also will have another player city, a Rebel Guilded one.. relativly close to us. (Close meaning same planet). We expect to have SOME trade of either good, resources, or services between each community.
Where as some want cities, others want Glorified Guilds.. we want a simple Community...
That's not to say we would intend to have a "guild city," but it would be founded by members of the guild.
And while I like the idea of a small city, being able to build a really great community is going to take money. Keeping that community going is going to mean your city will need to have a healthy retail sector that attracts shoppers who will pay taxes and travel fees so that residents don't have to bear the full burden of supporting the city.
And that's why you need a shuttle. Customers are going to demand it.
You're under the assumption the economy of ALL towns will be based onout of town sales. It appears as if the different perks a town can have will allow them to specialize for whatever it's citizens want. If you have a community of merchants, then yes.. money is the governing factor. But if you have avillage of Rangersand Missions orientated people, then a Mission Terminal would be the way to go. And for the PVPcrowd, obviously Militias, Faction Terminals, and Player Bases near or in the Cities will be afactor.Having a city with everything for everyone is a large undertaking, and good luck to you. A city should be for it's citizens, not for the out of towners... Sinceour town is being founded by Rangers on Dantooine, we're not worried about the shuttleport, the cloning facility is more important to our needs.
As for the Guild issue, well I guess it depends on the Guild and the Server. I'm on Shadowfire, and we have some really great guilds, while we have others vanishingevery day. Many folks are turned off by Guilds in general, and look forward to Player Cities as an alternate way tointeract in a communal atmosphere. While ONE person OWNS a guild, EVERYONElives in a Community.
