The mayoral power to email "citizens".

Several people in my city want to run for mayor. None of them really want the job...

I have offered to forward any letters they might wish to address to the residents.

Some mayors would not do this. Some would use the Citizens mail to defeat opponents.

It is the most =powerful= tool that we have. Yes, it can be used for griefing. But it leaves evidence. Lots of evidence.

As the saying goes "Guns don't kill people, people kill people". The person who misuses this tool can easily be tracked and punished.

Communications and community... there is a reason they both stem from the same root word.

Are mayors losing that ability?

I agree. I have no problem forwarding mails via "citizens"

However, the incumbent almost always has better odds than the challenger. Media access is one way. I will forward stuff, but I have to approve it first. To date, I have only forwarded 2 mails out of about a dozen I was asked to, and for valid reasons. Most of which were things I had thought of, but my (unofficial) city council brought up again, meaning others had the same concerns as me.

Smart a*$ moment -- doesn't communism have the same root also? And we see how well that worked out.

Yes, freedom of the press belongs to those that own the presses.

Sighryn,

I think you missed my point. I'm not going to forward garbage to everyone, especially not using the city mail. If I did that, people would stop reading the city mails, since they would come to equate them with spam. The way I see it, I don't own the presses, the city does. I'm just the caretaker, not the city incarnate. If people aren't happy with how the city is run, they can have me replaced. If people have a city problem they come to me to resolve it.But, its not about me, its about the good of the city as a whole. You like something the city does, show your gratitude to the city, not me. You want mail forwarded, great -- but I'm not going to forward it just because you said to. I want to see how it will benefit the citizens of the city before I send it. And I will run it by the council, which is a pretty well-rounded group in comparison the the population as a whole, so its not just my say. I run the majority of my actions through them first, their reactions help me judge what the reactions of the rest of the population will be.

I email my citizens whenever I feel that I need to get something out to my citizens, Things like weekly notices, sales going on, voting times, etc.

Alot of my citizens don't log on at the same time, so to make sure that they know what is going on weekly, or so that don't miss something, I use my Citizens, email type.

I wouldn't want to log in and know that I had missed a special event that my mayor had held. My citizens appreciate what I email them, and it helps to keep everyone in touch.

Also, When I email my citizens, I also give them the choice and the option to help build up the city, and to name statues and pick the colour of lights, and where they would like to see the decourations go. It's been a wonderful help, and I make sure in every letter that I send out, that I remind them that this is Their city as well.

They like it that way.

I guess it's easy for my city, all of our citizens are in our guild too. So I just give the candidates the "email guild" option to send out their campaigns.

Agreed.

I have so far only forwarded one merchant advertisement. It was from our armorsmith offering a 30% discount to any resident. That seemed to be news of general interest. I'm sure the person knew exactly what they were doing, not just asking "Hey! Advertise my shop!". He's a former mayor.

On the topic of campaign messages of opponents: In that case I would most definatly forward "garbage". Because I don't want them to win.
