Thread: Placing next to a Starter City

Howdy All,

Being new to these forums and wishing to learn as much as possible I haven failed to find an answer to one of my most important questions. How close can a player city be placed to a starter city? I know that it says player cities cannot be placed within 1000m of another city hall, but Starter Cities do not have city halls, so what is the build radius around a Starter City in order to place a Player City?

Anyone have an answer to this? It's slightly important seeing as our building site will have to be altered if we have to build 1000m away from Starter Cities as well as Player Cities.

My understanding was starter cities count in that 1000m distance

Antilochus, you should stop and ask yourself a couple of questions as to why you would want to do this.

1. Do we never plan to have a shuttleport?
2. Do we wish to gain revenue from shuttle tickets and vendor sales?
3. Do we want our city to offer something unique?
4. Do we want our city to have plenty of room to grow?

Placing a city next to a starter city will extremely limit your abilities as a city. A shuttleport would be (nearly) worthless, especially once vehicles come out. That means even if you DID get on, you would receive no revenue from ticket costs.

Additionally, visits wouldn't be as common. People are already in a big, well established city. What will your city offer them unique or timeworthy?

You may consider what is a slightly inconvenient site now, that can pay off later much better. For example, myself and several others have cities growing on Dantooine...my city and two others form a close triangle-shape around the Force Crystal caves everyone hunts for holocrons in, and the abandoned rebel base that is part of the Rebel theme park. Therefore plenty of travellers use our facilities, join our city, or purchase products we receive sales tax from.

Make a solid plan as to what you want your city to be, and what it can offer players--which you'll need to grow in size--that other cities cannot. Offer free housing, mounts, resources to crafters...give incentives.

I hope this has helped some.

Well... I placed my city hall about 700 meters from Wayfar on Tatooine, seeing as Wayfar doesn't have a shuttleport, and people would like a shuttle in the south west corner of Tatooine. So i don't know what the minimum distance from a starting city is.

A solid plan is already in place Kindarin. The proxomity of us to a Starter City means that we won't have to worry about the additional cost of a shuttleport since most people can walk or ride to us.

Vendor sales has nothing to do with our proximity to a starter city. In fact, I frequently get more sales on the global bazaar than on my own vendors, which means staying closer helps me business and other in the community who sell on the bazaar. Since everyone wookiee and their cousin is selling something on the global vendor list I see little difference between selling at the vendor or the bazaar as long as I keep my prices down under 3000.

Out city is going to offer the uniqueness that our community has possessed since early September. We are a like minded group of individuals who would rather place gardens and lamp posts around our city instead of becoming another carbon copy commerce stop in the chain of player cities. Referring to cities I have been through, not your own specifically.

Growth has never been an issue with us, as we would be happy to remain a humble outpost. We simply want the recognition that so many other communities are enjoying right now and would like to see "Entering Your City" whenever we trudge back to our houses after a few hours of playing.

I appreciate your candor in the matter of solid planning, but I would not have posted if I didn't have a concrete idea of where our community wanted to be. Now that cities require 10 residents to start up it has been an arduous step to get this far, and I would not risk setting down a city hall unless everyone involved was positive of what our goals as a community are. I simply needed a clear understanding on distance from Starter Cities as we enjoy going to it more than some of the other Player Cities on our planet, which are often drab and far away. Being a "suburb" so to speak is exactly up our alleyway.

Thanks for the info Dragonsblood. We are at a simliar distance to a Starter City and this news strengthens my resolve to get a city hall placed as soon as the patch goes live eliminating the outpost cap on planets.

Ok well I read something in there that just sounded wrong so Ill point it out just in case.

You talked about having lamp posts and gardens and yet staying as an outpost.

You can not do that in practice.

The amount of decorations you can place is restricted by the size of your city so if you want to remain an outpost chances are you will only be able to place 3 lights and 3 gardens. Also an Outpost is only 150m radius if you were planning a few gardens that wont leave you much room for houses.

Im to tierd to look up the proper info but im sure you can find the restrictions on this board somewhere.

Ant, I fail to see why you would want a city at all. If you're only going to have 10 members it seems as though its just vanity at that point. The only thing you can benefit is having recognition on the planet map. You don't have vendors, you don't have city facilities, what is the point of having a city hall if you don't have anything that atleast looks like a city. If you're desperate to just live somewhere in a city, go join a larger city and save spots on the cap for places that will make use of it.

Since cities are limited, people are getting mad that cities spots are wasted with overglorified suburbs. The major point of cities is the shuttleport. People hate running everywhere and its so wasteful to take a limit good(city spots)and not use it to any part of its potential.

Actually Cocomono, it's not really vanity so much as a place to call our own. Do you have your own house? If not, do your live in an apartment and would like your own house? We would rather have our own community than survive in the streets of a larger more impersonal setting (not that all cities are impersonal). There are several players in this game that have several different desires from playing.

The major part of this game is that ALL players can have a city, since outposts will not count towards the overall city cap once the patch is released. We will have a city hall as well as decorations. Although the game now limits outposts to 7 decorations, it is still possible to create a pleasing city arrangement with just those limitations. In truth, our community already looks more like a small courtyard of a town in most rural areas. Many large player cities simply look like a "mash" of housing and civic buildings.

The idea of player cities is not to create metropolis sized centers of commerce, that's simply one avenure to pursue. We have chosen a different avenue as we consider a smaller, more intimate community more important than commercial benefits.

It is in no means wasteful for players to use their city slots as they see fit. If you follow your own advice then frustrated players can join larger cities, which our city has no intention of becoming.

Nothing is wrong Inflictor of Pain, unless of course you wanted to join our city

The number of decorations is 7, that gives us 3 lamp posts (more than enough to light a small oupost) and 3 small gardens. That leaves one spot open for a bank so we don't have to walk into town when we need to make large transactions and don't want to have 5% charged from bank tips.

All of our houses are arranged in a courtyard so there is a large open area in the middle to place all of the beforementioned decorations. We have taken this city business very seriously and have thought it out in terms of planning. There will be enough room and enough decoration to make our outpost very pleasing to the eyes.

Technically you can put your city right on the edge of an NPC city no build zone. However, you lose all of the area in your circle that is in the NPC no build zone. Instead of a rull radius you will now have a crescent shaped radius to build in.

If you want your maximum potential radius, you would have to be 450m from the city no build zone.

Thank you VERY much Mkappa, this is exactly what I was looking for. We are just about 400m away from a Starter City build zone so we have all the room we need to grow if possible, but as I've mentioned before we plan on staying small as long as possible and focusing on creating a community, not just a collection of players and commercial buildings that may or may not become as deserted as some of the Starter Cities have in recent weeks.
