Thread: Strange possibility for next update
For all those mayors that placed their City Hall on Nov. 13th
I just looked at the time left until my next city update. if you include a couple of hours on top of the time it gives you (for a couple more server restarts), the next update will happen just before the servers have theirdaily restart on Friday morning. Now it usually takes my city an hour to do the update and dish out the xp to me. What happens if the servers go down during the cities update process?
Just something to think about. Your thoughts?
I'm sure the devs have something planned in case of a problem. They have never let us down before have they?
while the servers are down.. the clock stops...
I place the city hall at 11:30 PM on patch day (thursday if I remember correctly)
since the server goes down and maint.. the time have "drift" now
1st upgrade 4:15 am Friday
2nd upgrade 7:30am Friday
3rd upgrade 11:00am Friday (to level 4)
so I assume while the server is down for update.. the clock will stop again until the server comes back up.
I think the question is more ...
... what happens if the city update starts - and the server goes down before it finishes?

Well coming from a software development background, I don't see any reason the updates take so long. Therefore, I can only draw the conclusion that they don't. How then is this possible? Well theres a number of ways it could be done, but the two most likely is that there is a process in the server that periodically checks all the cities for pending updates. When it finds one, it handles it then. Since it would have to constantly check, it wouldn't run all the time, only periodically, or say a city every few minutes. Given what we know about how the servers work (Specifically that inactive areas aren't even loaded) this seems the most likely. There really is no other system in the game to compare it to. This is the only ongoing long term regular event that we can see the time for.
So what does this mean? Well it means if your update "happens", meaning the counter reaches 0, right before the server shutdown.. It will still be at 0 when it comes back up, and the next time it gets to your city, it will actually perform the update. In fact, I'm pretty confident this is exactly what will happen.
like all updates (at least that I know of) usually have to "shutdown" the program for a good update.. less the chance of corruption..
so.. the server do a last minute save of everything.. the devs brings it down... patch it.. and brings it back up.. (hench I think the reason for the timer slides) and it continues on it merry way ![]()
(at least that is what I do when I update the server.. I don't want to do major update on the database while people are in it... that would just cause havoc.. not to metion a lot of piss people yelling at me)
