Thread: A simple way to add walls a civic structure without having to worry about griefing...

I know a lot of people would like to be able to build walls in their cities, however as has been pointed out before, the Devs have avoided adding walls because it would be too easy to grief someone by walling them into an enclosed area with no exit. Some people have suggested adding code of various sorts to try and prevent this, but considering how much other stuff is on the table for the Dev team, writing special code for walls probably isn't high on their priority list. However, here's a way that walls could be added without the need for any special code. Just make sure that every craftable wall segment has an archway in it somewhere. Now I know this will limit layout options somewhat, but if there's a large variety of wall segments then you'd still be able to come up with some good layouts. Just make sure that some of the wall segments are rather long, plus add in a few types of angled or intersection wall types. Adding wall segments like this would be a really easy and quick addition to the game. All the Devs would have to do is copy some of the wall structures that are already inNPC citiesand attach already exsisting crafting code to them. Make the footprint for a placed wall segment be a little shorter than the wall is the length way, (So as to allow walls to be built all the way up to the side of buildings,) and make the footprint a little wider the width way, (So as to prevent someone from putting straight wall segments perpendicular to each other in order to close of an area despite the archways in the walls.)

Does't arches in every segment defeat the purpose of walls?

In any case... This is a futuristic technological environment.. what good are stone walls with repulsorlift vehicles and thermonuclear detonation devices?

Yeah.. they're good eye candy

In any case.. another solution would be to have a wall option that would put walls totally around the city at a set radius and let you put in entry ways and whatnot at specific points. Instead of wall segments... allow the planner to only remove parts of the wall that's automatically generated in a given radius around a city.

Only if all the segments are real small. If there are longer wall segments as options, you'd be able to keep the archways spread out, but still not completely close off an area. For example, there could be one segment that is say 50 meters long with only one arch way near one of the ends. By putting two of these segments together, one rotated 180 degrees, you'd be able to essentially make a 100 meter long wall while avoiding any griefing. I agree with you that a more advanced wall system would be nice, but such a system is going to require new coding, and I think the Devs have plenty of other stuff they'd rather do first. The type of walls I describedin my first postcould be added with the least amount of coding work possible. In fact, unless their development tools are really lacking, a single DEV should be able to add in walls like I suggested in less than a day of work.
