Thread: a cryer for the streets
Going to go through kind of a wishlist here. I'm sure some of this is repeated by other people in other threads. I normaly don't visit these boards often so I'm not sure which thread to put these in etc (oh, and I'm lazy
)
You know when I first heard of the politician (post initial axing after it was re-introduced), I just basicaly shrugged. It was never something I was interested in. However, as I see the system in action, it could really be a boon to adding flavor to player cities.
Cryer: That's right. Placable NPCs that repeat custom text messages (annimation would be nice as well).
Doesn't sound like much, but it is a nice flavor tool. Give the mayor the ability to place and edit what these NPCs say. Have a player in your town that has done something extrodinary? How about a cryer that when a player walks by says, "Did ya hear Soandso killed a kimo with his bare hands?". They could also be used for information about the player city.
This is pretty easy to implement. Well, at least I think it is with my lack of game mechanic knowledge. Basicaly, it's a combination of the current vendor system mixed in with the NPC dialogue menue. Vendors already herald to players as they pass by. Have a player walk by with the cryer going, "hey buddy, looking for some information?" The player click/holds, and up pops the NPC dialogue menu. With optioins such as, interesting info, upcoming elections, yadda yadda.
Let the mayors label the tabs(subjects), and then they can input the text as well. At anyrate, I like it hehe
Signs:
Oh yeah, this would be nice, quick, and straight out of the merchant system. Let the mayor place custom signs. Right now, we're getting around the lack of it by labeling streetlamps or other items. Sure would be nice to have dedicated sign art....even if it is re-usable shop signs.
Streets:
Yeah, you knew it was coming. You can't have a cryer on the streets without streets.
I find it interesting that I'm living in a metropolis yet I'm walking through fields of wheat/maze to get to the cantina. I'm guessing this is tough because of terrain mapping? The current system tries to flatten all terrain to put down the street texture? Well, I don't really like flat cities, so I can understand the hold up. I love how aestheticaly, cities are dissimilar and would hate to see that changed.
Does SWG not have the ability to substitute the grassland texture with a brick or paved texture yet keep the elevation of the generated landscape? At anyrate, I definately would like some streets. If possible give the mayor the ability to do this. It could work similar to the current structure placement tool. Have it switch to an overhead view and let the mayore click/drag over the areas s/he wants the paved textrue to cover.
Thanks
I have enough Spam, and Don't like the Cryer idea at all.
I would love to have signs and streets, hope to see them eventually.
I actually had a town crier for a while in the city hall - just a vendor with information on it and I turned the barking on occassionally to spread the word about certain events, etc. One of the most useful professions I have found to help me as a mayor has actually been Merchant
Exactly
I know most player reactions are going to be reduce the skill points for politicians since it's currently a utility profession. However, I like the idea of keeping the skill cost, but only if content or things can be added for politicians to do that justify the cost. The city politician can really go along way of setting the tone per city. We've already seen example of mayors using their imagination as described above to go around vacant mechanics; give them the mechanics.
