Thread: Factories: Inside city limits or outside?

Would you rather have your industrial zone (factories) inside city limits or outside? Why? I know if they are inside, you can tax them, but they take up space (especially structure factories)an look kind of ugly. Plus, why would any crafter want to place a factory inside city limits where it can be taxed. Are there some benefits from being inside the city?

Thanks.

People just like to have them close by to save on the running, but I would definitely rather have them outside my city. We have over 50 crafters in the city though, so it is not really proactical to havea couple hundred factories in the city (I am sure it would boost property tax revenues though!) Often they put down a couple factories and a storage shed rightalong the edge of town, it seems to work alright.

I think that allowing them inside the city limits is fine, it adds visual interest. As people travel through the city they will see the industrial district, the residential, commercial, etc...

I do think better controls are needed though. Industrial and Commercial structures should require zoning as should Guild Halls prior to placing. There should also be different tax structures (residential, commercial, industrial, or tax-exempt). This would really enable mayor to control what is built in the city (i.e. 20,000creds per week in tax for industiral units).

We only have a 2% sales tax, so structures have been built freely in the zones we've designated for them (commercial, residential, industrial). As we grow larger we will most likely move industry outside the citycore to expand housing. At 130 residents, I don't think we'll need to do this until about 175+ or so...

residential space is not a huge issue for us either at this point (around 120 citizens), but I have always found it easier to get things setup for the long term the first time rather than have to make people move (then they tend to get real upset). I know my factories are used as storage bins and have a ridiculous amount of crap in them, lol.

We never planned on our city growng to the size of a metropolis, so we put our factories just outside of 400m and our warehouses / crafting laboratories just inside the 400m mark when we first started. When our city grew to level 4, our warehouses were inside the city, allowing for a potential crafting bonus, while the factories remained outside and free from property tax. It also helped us to place a bank right next to the warehouses. That extra storage helps =)

We don't allow factories in our town or harvestors. I go to other player citys and see that there and think, ew a ghetto.

I have set up an industrial zone though right outside of town. It's next to this quiet little lake we are going to pollute.

If good resources were to spring up though in our town we'd allow our people to place their harvestor since it is just temporary. But otherwise no. Factories, definatly not.

Why not set up an "Industrial Park" where you have your citizens place their factories? You can then also have a crafter with a few lots to spare set up a 'crafting house', where you can place top quality crafting machines. Give them admin rights to the house, so they can pull their items from their output hopper and craft in the 'common house', perhaps even share resources, and so on.

We put our Industrial Park out far enough from city center but within the city zone so as we grew, the factories grew 'into' it. Everyone seems to like the idea of an Industrial Park, as some of the crafters even share different factories. Putting them all in one spot is convenient for them, and helps to control the 'look' of the city. With the addition of mounts and bikes, most crafters are amiable in the distance they need to travel and agree that the Industrial Park really lends itself to the city atmosphere. Most cities have "industrial zones" and the "residential zones" do not allow for factories.
