Thread: what kinda garbage does the research center do?

ok, so we enabled research center in our city a while back. didnt seem to make a bit of difference, but was costing us 125000c per week. i submitted a bug report, and a csr ticket to try and find out what it was supposed to do, and turned the damned thing off.

now, i worked up a couple of hundred items between myself and another crafter...neither of us got better results before or after the specialization was turned off. we both use 14.4 tools, and 40+ crafting stations. we never got any failures...until i turned that huge waste of city money off. now we fail 1 in 4 times when we are crafting. it did not happen before we turned it on, it did not happen while it was on (but we saw no benefit), but after we turned it off...good lord we cant make anything now.

the wording in the specialization description leads one to believe that they will receive a 15% increase to the final production role during experimentation...id assume that meant that if you started at 28%, and took an item up to 90% through experimentation that you would get 15% of the difference added during the final assembly of the prototype or schematic...doesnt work that way.

as best i can tell its another lame increase like the one you get from manufacturing center.

so...why does it cost so much, and why in the heck did our crafting go to pot after we turned it off?

Doesn't quite work like that and we've confirmed it, but crafting still sucks, and the failure rate still sucks. Lets say you are crafting armor, you go through one assembly phase, and probably about 3 experimentation phases.

The Manufacturing Center bonus applies to the Assembly phase and 'may' protect against critical failure, it alsoimproves the chance of higher success during assembly.

The Research Center bonus applies during the experimentation phase and 'may' protect against critical failure, it also improves the chance of higher success during experimentation.

The only thing we're not sure about is the protection against critical failure, it is possible that you still have the same chance of failure. Its hard to tell since failure was pretty common beforehand.

As you can see though, it doesn't directly give you more points, it just improves your successes from moderate to good to amazing, etc.

This Thread has different data and seams to rely on pretty good statistical data

Results:

#1 Powerups

Crafting inside the city limits resulted in 1.4% chance of a critical failure and a 21% chance for amazing results

Crafting outside the city limits resulted in 5.6% chance of a critical failure and a 16% chance for amazing results

#2 furniture. no difference between inside or outside city limits.

#3 Ore Mining Units.

Crafting inside the city limits resulted in 2.5% chance of a critical failure and a 25.6% chance for amazing results

Crafting outside the city limits resulted in 10% chance of a critical failure and a 0% chance for amazing results

#4 X34 Landspeeder

Crafting inside the city limits resulted in 1.4% chance of a critical failure and a 21% chance for amazing results

Crafting outside the city limits resulted in 5.6% chance of a critical failure and a 16% chance for amazing results

#5 exo-protein wafer

Crafting inside the city limits resulted in 1.7% chance of a critical failure and a 17.8% chance for amazing results

Crafting outside the city limits resulted in 5.4% chance of a critical failure and a 5.5% chance for amazing results

Conclusions.

I got aprox 4 times the critical failures crafting outside the city than crafting inside the city with the research specialization.

inside the city limits the amazing results generaly increased but the amount of increase varried greatly from 5 percentage points
better to 25 percentage points better than crafting outside the city limits.

Research center is really really nice for people that have 2 stats they want to improve upon while experimenting.

Hypothetical example

Outside of a research center: You are making a weapon component. With the resources you have you can get speed to 95% and damage to 95%. It takes 8 experimentation points to get to 95% on either stat, and with the other two you can get the 2nd stat to 35%. So you are able to make a 95% 35% weapon component.

Inside of a research center: With the same resources you can still only get to 95% on speed and damage. You can't improve that 95% any higher. However now it only takes 6 experimentation points to get either stat to 95% so you now have 4 points left over. You can now make a 95% 70% weapon component. With research specialization you were able to double the effectiveness of the secondary statistic.

End example

Im an architect and only have 1 stat I experiment, extraction efficiency. The research specialization isn't too great for me, but it does mean that I get the highest possible efficieny 80%plus of the time now instead of 60% or so. Most cities heavy with crafters will tell you this is definitely worth 125k. I have even heard of some cities where one crafter pays the fee for it.

well you dont seem to like it, so why come here and call it stupid and sibmit a bug report just because you dont like it?

my city is mainly made up of crafters... we all love it.

myself as a master architect, it means that i can max out BER on extractors using less experiment points, leaving me more points for storage... not a major deal for me... but a wep smith friend can max out damage/ speed sooner giving him more points for range and ham efficiancy... this works for ALL crafters... we have doctors, BE's armor smith and many others. not one negative word has come about this city spec. all my crafters love it and cheerfully help to pay for the cost each week.

dont like it? fine, so its not for you... dont come in here and winge about something you dont like.. personal taste is not a bug

It has huge value, if you need/want amazing results for your experiments. I won't make a single schematic without amazing results, and on some of my schems, I don't save it until I get two concurrent amazings on the same item. Research is the only thing that allows me to set and meet that standard and still have time to get some sleep at night.
