If this is the case can some one explain why I need permission to join a city?

Basically no one can join a city unless a Mayor says they can which means they are basically private play grounds.

The devs have said many times, especially when the cap was filled in two minutes that cities were not made closed off to people and they were to be built by the community.

I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering what happened to that vision.

the choice to lock a city is a choice that the mayor has to make...if there is a city you wish to join...ask the citizins why the mayor chose to do this and have them bring it up to him...

there are free citys...and there are non-free citys...

I know that we have zoning on largely because it helps with keeping our layout solid. However, our admission policy is basically either getting to know the people in town or a referral from an existing resident.

But if we just let people place at random, we wouldn't be able to keep with our current layout.

We're trying to keep our city RP players . . . if you RP (and show it, we have a week waiting period) you're in.

It's not a "private playground" thing. There's a very small minority of cities who are saying "our area only, get the hell out". It's a matter of building a city culture. If you're building a crafter city, would it make sense to fill it up with fighter types? Or allowing 2 Rebel PA's to move into your Imperial homeland? Or a group of 7331-sp33k griefers to move into a tight network of PvE PA's who have worked together for months?

I think the issue is on the Dev's shoulders, who pulled a 180 and decided to tell people that other players' hard-earned work was the community's by right to use, try to take over, etc. They spent 2 and a half years telling people who followed the game that cities were an opportunity for a group of players to make their personal marks on the world by enforcing their own content, now they say they are nothing but expensive money sinks that you maintain for other people's benefit . . . .

*whisper* Guess what . . . we ain't falling for their line. Like it or not, we're making them what they told us they would be eventually. And if that means you're not right for a specific city, then you move on and find one that you fit with. I guarantee you WILL find one; after all, the cities want to grow and you are a vote.

We have zoning on for the following reasaons :

City layout - we can control who places where & how

City Style - so only Tatooine style buildings get placed

Factional Status - we dont allow rebels

Griefers - speaks for itself

Harvesters - we dont want 30 large ore harvies parked outside the hall
