How do you currently maintain contact with your citizens? What tools do you wish you had at your disposal? Is there anything you would do that would improve the tools we already have?

Good communication is a vital part of running a successful city. Things like status reports, city chat channels, and casual hellos all contribute to good relations with citizens and keep them up-to-date on current events. Each city has different things that work for them.

There is plenty of room for improvement in the communication tools we have available in-game, though. It can often be cumbersome to maintain regular contact with citizens and to solicit feedback from them. Many suggestions have been made in the past about improvements to our current tools as well as ideas for new things that could be implimented.

Lets share those ideas!

TC-Prime is back up and running alongside TC-Bria. The rotation of TC-servername has been suspended until further notice because of some background issues that were noticed with TC-Bria. They've put a new patch out this week to correct the shuttle timer message, change experience reward for non-group members, and correct a few Tailor pallete issues. If you have a few moments, pop over to one of the Test Servers and check it out.

This week's Friday Feature showcased the House Packup which should be out soon. Thunderheart answered several questions posed about the house pack up and stated that the desire for Mayors to be able to move houses within their city limits had been passed on to the team for evaluation. The link to the discussion thread is featured below.

This week's featured threads:

  • Friday Feature August 12th, House Packup Guide -- A look into an upcoming feature that will allow player housing to be rolled up and moved as is.

  • State of the Guilds Address 8.12.2005 -- Rothin wrote up a great "State of" post over in the Player Associations and Grouping forum, highlighting things that guild members and leaders want to see and reviewing many of the changes that have happened in the past few months.

  • PA Suggestions/Wishlist -- There are several ideas for communication tools for PAs that may also be relevant to Player Cities.

  • Garva's Home Show 8.11.2005 -- This week's Home Show features an excellently designed Cantina from Starstrider!

  • In-Testing Forum -- Keep up-to-date on the latest releases to Test Center....coming soon to a live server near you!

How do you currently maintain contact with your citizens?

Well, in mycity, every active citizen is a member of my guild, so for everyday communication, I use just use guildchat. For feedback and notices and things, I send out city mails, and for info, I post it to our forums. (Nothing exciting there, I know. )

What tools do you wish you had at your disposal?

We really, really need a permanent city chat channel like guilds have. A status report thingie that we could send out would be nice too. And also a "militia" email, like the "citizens" one.

Is there anything you would do that would improve the tools we already have?

Well, the only tool we have that I can think of is the "citizens" email. As for improving it...I've had it not work a few times, so fix that, but otherwise there's just not much to change that I can think of right now. If there is, I'd love to hear about it. :

Most of the problems with communication in my city come from citizens that just don't care. Too many of them are off grinding Jedi and can't take a few minutes to come vote or to read their email. I've even had people tell me, "Oh I didn't read that mail, I delete all of my mail as soon as I get it." /strangle Honestly, if I ever came back to the game, I would love to be a mayor again, but not in the city I live in now.

This may not seem to fit the topic at first but it has to do with communication, really.

What I would like to see is the possibility to contact the owner of a specific structure - the most logical way would be, to give the Mayor the ability to see by whom a structure is owned. So the means of communication are allready there, but to make the communication posible information is missing.

Also it would be nice to get information about when the owner has been online the last time - it would fully suffice to know the timeframe, like "1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, never ever...". The reason for this would also be communication, as I wouldn't need to wait for an answer by someone, that hasn't been online in a year.

Edit: The tools I use for communication with the citizens are ingame mail and a forum we have outsiede of the game.

The Idea with the short message ist wonderful

An off-topic update on current events, I got some information on our issues with mission terminal discrepencies. You can read the update in the stickied thread.

And on-topic....my answers to the questions.

Kor Spera is a guild city (every citizen is part of the guild although not every member of the guild is a part of the city), so we have our guild chat channel to keep in touch on a daily basis. That's generally the way we organize hunts and other unplanned activites. We also have the mail option on for all of our guild members so they can use the guild mail to contact all of the citizenry at once if they need it. I send out weekly status reports to keep the citizens up-to-date on the number of citizens we're at, voting totals, the amount in the treasury and our update times.

I do wish we had a way of communicating with visitors to relate our city rules and to welcome them to the city. We're a neutral, role-play city so it can be frustrating to repeat yourself over and over. We have a statue that says "Welcome to Kor Spera, Please observe our no-fighting policy" but it doesn't do much good because we can't get it to place right in front of the shuttleport with our other structures. Being able to add a short message to the "You have entered Kor Spera" system message would be awesome.

I'm actually fine with the communication tools we have for the city as a Mayor to our citizens as you can pretty much do what you need with the "citizens" mail. I'd like to be able to designate sub-groups, especially militia, and open that option to certain citizens, though. It kind of gets more into city management tools, but there is certainly room for improvement there as well.

Being able to add a short message for a resonable fee would be the only thing that would really help city communication. I would love this option to advertis a special event or say, announce our anniversary or something like that.

Personally i think that communicating with citizens is fine now, citizen mail is just fine, plus most cities are a single guild.

Subset groups for mailing would be considerably useful but you can always just tack on the names of your militia-men. Same goes for existing measures to use chat channels etc. One thing that would be really useful but not something irreplaceable is getting the ballot box terminals to finally work. You can always do polls with mails etc. but these would make itless mailbox intensive.Have one dropped in city hall to make referendums, and oh since you're already there vote for my character and donate 6 mil to the treasurey

Short message to add to entry message

Ability to send "militia" mail like "citizens"

Notification (like new structures or new citizens) of /citybans

Ability to set name on city hall, cloner, bank, garage (this was eliminated because of griefing?!?!?! A mayor is less trustworthy than a cantina or med center owner?!?!?!?!)

City chat

Weekly financial report (fits with communication, tired of being kept in the dark)

It alone was not removed, allslash commands where meaning that the ability to make your clone center private or more importantly city hall, and therefore the ability of voting your ass out of office, private was removed. If they can put one or two commands back in considerably easily it probably would have happened by now but it seems that it's an all or nothing with them and I'm sure you've realized that some people are as*holes thanks to the internet anonymity complex.

I would like a tool to change terrain or some kind of special ability to plant houses in abrupt areas. An active advertisment to put in the city to inform of changes etc. A better taxes control. New public buildings as towers (to see the city from the top), big lamps. The ability to relocate statues or fountais, and put them near buildings without the problem.

But thats a lot of coding for 100 people per server (mayors).

Heemos estado trabajando en elloooo esta mañana y ayerrr (andaleeee). KIOTO YA!!
