Howdy everybody

I'm mayor of a very small village (only 10 members atm) and I was wondering on what you all did to find more citizen for your town. Currently I'm trying to advertise my town in Coronet and Theedand we give away free houses to new citizens, sadly so far no takers on that. So what did you all find was the best recruitment stategy for you?

Thanks

Giving away free houses or even money and other items can be a good strategy for short term strategy, and will work mainly with novice players.

Keeping your citizens happy, working on the creation of a spirit of community, and paying attention to the quality of your city in all different domains (commerce, urban planning, decoration, civic services...)is - I think - the best strategy to keep a strong demography in the long term.

Something that can help you in an advertizement campaign for your city is to have a website ; I strongly recommend the service provided by guilportal.com ; you can see what can be done with this powerful (and free) service on Aegis Holonet at http://aegiscity.free.fr ; if you decide to use this service and need help to get started, let me know.

The best strategy for our city has been to bring in the people you and your other citizens know andhave met - thru hunting, doing business, etc... people you meet going about your daily business.

Giveaways sometimes work - sometimes they don't. And when it does work, I've had plenty of THOSE ppl come in drop a house, declare residence (or not) then I never see them in the game again - or they leave the city days/weeks later. If they can quickly decide to join a city where they know noone - they can and will leave just as quickly.

Work on relationships, build friendships, show leadership, help people out ALOT. You are a poltician - so be one of the BEST. Don't do for others JUST to see what you can get from them, be a true servant. You will be rewarded in due time. The best and most sucessful mayors are there for their citizens - and visitors too. Don't give AWAY stuff, assist people where you can - and i'm not talking about just money. Information is a powerful tool.

Find websites that have SWG info - waypoints of trainers, etc. When someone asks you a question - tab out of the game grab the info from a website and give it to them with a smile. If you don't have trainers in your city, make a deal with cities in your area to know who has WHAT...

Also, get a hobby! Do something to your city hall, or another building that will attract attention. Ihave the largest collection of Tusken outfits (11) in my cantina -and others in other buidings (this WAS a BIG deal till they started dropping again, but I still like it!) Or decorate the city hall (or hire someone to). You can decorate in the basic way and be attractive- or build something cool that will attract people.

In short - serve others and do something that will make your city stand out. Good Luck!

First off, Good Luck.

Building/Managing a player city certainly is challenging. There are really 3 classesout there:

  1. newer players (need the help, support of the player city community)

  2. basic and elite profession players (may only want a city or PA of their own - excludning newbies)

  3. solo or non-city joining folks (who just like working alone and not be part of a city)

Typically, Player citiescater to the new players. But we're at the mercy of new players playing and joining your server. Next, once you have them is to keep them. And, they neither have very much money at the beginning to pay house and vehicle maintenance. I do as well, give a house, speeder and credits to help them off and cross my fingers and hope they will continue playing. Also, some begin another character(s) on different servers and they may only stay with you for a short time.

So, getting citizens and keeping them is always a struggle....I think, more cities should actually mergeand become a bigger one rather than beginnng new one. A city of 10 should join a city of 60. I say that because a city of 60 would have a shuttleport and all those other city structures in place and a mayor who already has the skills to place/manage a city.Freeing one from having to take the Politician profession. On our planet, we only have 2 cities that have a shuttleport, hence cities that have over 55 citizens. I think there is greater succes in joining one then beginning a new one.

I find, once you have a city you needto keep all citizens involved and participating Our city has events and I try to schedule one or two a week.I send all citizens a descriptionemail (event,time/place etc)...After the event, I'd send another email such as "Another successful event - 12 participated, looted 2 sith holos and 1 jedi holo - if you missed this event, hope to see you at the next".....something to that effect.

Sometimes, I'll just say "First one to get to City Hall' gets a free......(X34 or whatever)

Our city was 35 people and now it's 72. Myself and a few others in our city always spam whenever we can at shuttleports/starports and cantina's - not as much lately.

I suspect the summer/vacation months will also hurt the player cities as there may be some players just not returning and houses that have decayed and the citywilll suffer it's loss as the citizenship list declines.

Maybe, the Space Expansion will bring us a few.

Start with saying hello to anyone you see. Guilded or not. If you've chosen politician, there's a pretty good chance you're a friendly person who likes to be around other people.

This may sound a bit silly, and perhaps a bit shady to some, but here's what I do. I hang out outside the Mos Eisley starport. This is where the "noob landing" is. They're fresh off the ship, so to speak. I try to help anyone who seems to be having trouble. I make friends with them and help if they want it.I talk about the city... I often gain citizens this way. A free small is given to each new citizen if they so desire. I do ask that if they move up in house size, that they give the small back, or if they move away, to do the same. (most have been terrific about this. it's all in how you phrase it up front, if not, it's only a house, no biggie)

To entice masters to join up, I talk about specialization. I talk about how we're presently a research center, and that we're working on many forms of advertising to bring foot traffic into the city. I personally make ubese armor shirts labeled with our city and it's merchant association. I have a pet that bears the name as well, and often leave it in visible (yet not invasive) locations around some of the major cities. I most often leave it off to the side of the theed starport.

It's already been said (and quite well, I might add) that the secret to keeping citizens is to get to know them. Talk to them. Find out what they're up to. Some will be thrilled with this. It's the little things that matter when it comes to this. For instance. I label the street lamps in town with the street names. The street names are dedicated to some who have left the game, and perhaps to current guilds, or even sectors of the city (such as Merchant Way).

I then take the time to give new folks a tour of the city. This gives me the time to talk to them. People, by nature like to talk about themselves... get them started & just listen. If you can use the details of what they say to help them... do it... you'll have more citizens than you know what to do with. One of your citizens is working his way up through smuggler? Get him a crate of survival knives. He should appreciate it. Tell him why you're doing it... consider it a gift from the city to a good citizen. (this works well if you can get an artisan to donate the crate perhaps you can arrange to get some steel for that artisan at a later point.)

Lastly, I have taken the time to create positions of office within our city. These positions all report to me, and I work with them. This gives them some inclusion and a voice in the running of the city. For example, nominate (and vote on it using the citizen e-mail feature) someone to be the "Civic Huntmaster". Perhaps you could have a "Director of Merchant Affairs" or any other position you wish. Be creative. Talk it up, and above all... have fun!
