Thread: My neutral city's defense against overts

Just thought I'd share a mayor experience of my neutral town with a large group of overt trouble makers.

My city is officially neutral (though over 50% are rebels).

We pretty much have 1 law: no-pvp in town. We discourage people from being overt to help this.

I've been an opponent to the /citywarn for neutral cities saying that existing tools in the game are enough; well, last night I had to practice what I preached.

In the evening about 5 overt imperials dropped in from the shuttleport and quickly attracted a crowd in front of our city hall (the main city gathering area). Some of them were trying to cause duels, spamming emotes and verbally taunting some citizens. (Many of the rebel citizens, who are in my guild, wanted to declare and attack them.)

I respectfully asked the overts to leave explaining that we don't want overt players in town (they laughed as you'd expect and pulled several pets and At-St's). People started to get tense up.

I told citizens who were being spammed to /addignore. I ordered all citizens to leave the area (which they responded to quickly). Didn't want to give the overts more attention.

I then started city banning the overts and told them they'd be ignored. In a minute or two about 15 more overts from thier guild shuttled in. I started to ban the new arrivals. Many started circling the shuttleport in their speeders. I finished banning them and said "goodbye, enjoy the drive home".

I then sat silently on the city hall steps... (so they were banned, ignored and had no attention).

In about 2-3 minutes (not much time at all), they started to stay.. "This sucks" and the like. They soongrouped and drove off (nearest shuttleport is about 6k away).

It took about 15 minutes, but my neutral city drove away these overts (more like 'bored them to death').

/city warn would have done us no good. We (the about 20 citizens in town, half of them crafters or newbies) would have quickly been wiped out (probably multiple times). Even if we were all in the militia, I doubt even the stronghold specialization would have helped.

/cityIgnore would have made it much easier (especially combined with a /cityPetStore command).

I'm mayor of a city that seems to be very similar to your own.

I'll be mailing my citizens with a sugestion that they come and read this thread !

Many thanks.

actually it was my understanding how /warn was they couldnt attacke back... but other than that .. that is pretty much the best solution .. ignore those begging for attention .. and they will move on..

Hello

That was really great the way you handled the matter, with maturity and a respectful manner.

Great example for other Mayors to follow.

I personally have been against the use of CityWarn, as it was used to grief a lady friend of mine.

CityWarn is good to have, if it was fixed to prevent the abuse of it for griefing players, and used in a mature manner that it was intended for its use.

Great tactics for that kind of sitituation, however as a major supporter of a fixed /citywarn, more towards overts I would say yes /citywarn probably wouldn't have helped you at all and just made things worst, but I feel that your tactic only works for smaller cities or cities ran by one PA which sounds like yours is. Now just to clear a few things, I don't run a neutral city, I run a strong rebel city, most of my citizens run around overt andwe have adetachment base and faction terminals I mean the city is as much Rebel as it can be. But the reason I stressed for some kind of form of control of what overts exist within a city is because of what happened to a neutral city on my server. I won't go to far into details about the city or its location or name, but it use to be the largest city on our server, completely deticated to role playing, and neutral to the defination to where the city was pretty much 1/3 neutral, 1/3 rebel, and 1/3 imp. The city is probably one of oldest on the server and is made up of many different PAs in the beginning but what started happening was that the streets started to turn into War Zones. The problem was people would tend to start running around overt and next minute tons of citizens were killing each other in the streets. It was ruining the city because the city was built for RP not war and citizens were no longer feeling safe living in the city and the leadership of the city was even being called into question on whether they really were trying to keep the city neutral or overlooking one faction's actions over the others. Then a bunch of other stuff happened and the outcome was a lot of people left the city and a lot of bad feelings andblood were left behind. The city is no longer the way it use to be and it really sucks that such a great thing is gone just because people can't respect what a community is trying to do.

Now I know /citywarn was used as a form of griefing but changing it just for overts is in no way a griefing tool. I mean someone is overt for a reason, and espeically if we see nothing wrong with turning our militia members into covert scanners to kill people trying to avoid PvP who just happen to be of another faction.

Just my two cents on the matter.
