i just picked up novice politician, and ordered a city hall from an architect.

ok, this is probably a really dumb question, but i checked that FAQ page and didn't see the answer, though i probably missed it, i tend to do that sometimes i found the answer to my first question, which was what is the radius of a town once you drop the city hall (150m)

but how do i get political XP so that i can start getting up the trees to place more city structures such as a bank and shuttleport?

To gain XP you must be voted in or have votes in your favor in a town you reside in. The elections are held every week and at the end of the week with the votes are tallied you gain XP for "X" amount of votes in your favor. Here's a helpful guide...

Place your city hall and establish your city. You will get 100 Poli XP for each citizen in your city, every time the city goes though its maintenance cycle. So...if you have 15 people in your city when you next cycle through the maintenance routine you will get 1500 Poli XP. It isnt a very fast way to get the XP, but, once you get 25-50 people in your city it will move nice and fast.

I dont have any advice on which tree to go up first though. I originally went up the martial policy tree so that I could place a cloner, establish the militia and get to stronghold to help with base defense. I finally settled on the research specialization for my city which is in the Fiscal Policy tree. Civic Poloicy 1 and 2 will let you place mission terminals and recruit skill trainers which is a very nice thing for a city to have. You might consider getting them in the first few weeks of your growth into the Politician profession.

Welcome to the world of Politics in SWG. Once you are the hostage....eerrr...sorry .... mean the mayor you are very likely going to be the mayor for life. So settle in, get to know the rest of your cell mates in this forum and enjoy the good advice that so many nice people have to offer here.

thanks for the welcome

i already know what my cities initial priorities are. i need to get mission terminals and a shuttleport as soon as i can, and then get trainers, bank and garage.

i am placing the city on Lok, and on Lowca there are VERY few shuttle ports and garages on Lok. i found a really sweet spot on lok that has a lake on one side, and mountains on another side. very scenic (other than the mountain dew colored water)

i am really looking forward to getting into mayoring a city. the last city i was a resident of got broken apart because the mayor at the time destroyed the city hall because he switched from imperial to rebel and wanted to stick it to us. and i know that if i'm the mayor, i won't have ot deal with all of that drama.
