Player cities can be one of the most under-utilised aspect of the Star Wars Galaxies experience if you don't know how to use them! Placing a city in the middle of no where can be bad, but also may be helpful, depending on what you need your city to do. If you plan to house many faction bases in your city, a far away location is best. If you want visitors and business, near a POI, server generated city (IE Mos Entha) or a planetary landmark (IE location 0, 0).
Building a business city
If you want to make alot of cash with your city, than you may want to listen up to this. If your guild is more into crafting items, or selling loot, resources and things like that, you're going to want a city where everyone has access to it. The best location for a city like this is near a server city that has a neutral starpot. If your city is near a starport/shuttleport when you first create it, more people will want to come to it as they have less travel time. When creating a city like this, you may wish to place your city hall in a open area, facing north.Having a city in the open will allow people to see it if they are driving by. It is also good to keep alot of room infront of the city hall.
Main street is an important part of a good business city. You want to have a fairly large space for this street. City hall, Guild hall, vendor malls, shuttleport, cloning facility, cantinas and hospitals should all be on this street. Also you should leave enough room between the 2 sides of the street so you can place tents, banks and gardens in the middle. The heart of your city is in Main Street, so you should make it looks its best.
Another very important part of making your city look nice is lineing up all the houses into streets. I have learnt from past experience that you are the only one who knows how the city should look. If you choose to, get arid of all your lots and you be the only one to place houses in the city. This will allow you to place all the houses in the correct places to make the city look nice. After you place the house you can use the /transferstructure command to give it to the owner. Many cities have flourished because everything lined up nicely.
Building a Stronghold
Stronghold cities are much different from Business cities. Mainly the Strongholds are ment to keep bases alive, enemies out and allies in. Easiest way to make a stronghold city is to have Generic housing all around the bases you place to minimize enemy entry. Other houses can be placed side by side also to make a maze. This will make the enemy's movement much slower so you have a bit more time to prepare. If you really want your bases to be secret, you must make your city invisible. No mission terminals, no "normal" profession trainers, only elite trainers, and never register your city on the planetary map. Make your city invisible so no one will come. This will minimize enemy raids, because they wont be able to find you as easy. Stronghold cities should also be near hills, or in ditches. If you cant see the city from a distance, you will have less visitors. Placing turrets around the city will also protect your bases.
Use any or all of these techniques to make your player city! The nicer the city you live in looks, the more respect you will recieve, the more people will want to join, and everyone will feel better about living in a well planed out city.
