I know I am probably necroing an old subject, bu does anyone know if there is a breakdown of how income for a city works. How much do I make for sales tax, income, garage, etc.I am trying to use the city nudjet excel file, but with no income record it is pretty hard. I understand how income, garage, and basic income works. But do I get income for money paid to trainers?

There's no breakdown available.
We've been asking (and hoping) for this for a long long time.
And no, you don't get income from trainers or mission terminals... The only income is from the taxes you can set. And donations from generous citizens (which there's also no way of tracking)...

You only get money from Taxes (Garage, shuttle, sales tax, property tax and income tax) that is about it.. you do not get (but most of us wish we did) percentage from trainers or mission terminals (like faction bases that would be sooooooo cool)
Sadly... you can tell what you are spending (at least you have to find the individual prices and check against what you have in your maintence tab.. and just subtract from the treasury... after that calculate the difference you actually have after the city maint period..... that just give you an idea how much is coming in...

yup no line item accounting here.
the best method I have is to turn on one tax, such as property tax, for the week and calculate how much I earn from it. Then next week turn on only the sales tax, then the garage tax etc....
I assume that the one week is enough of an avg for me to calculate what I can bring in when all the taxes are turned on. Sales tax is the hardest for me to quantify.

After each payment the mayor should get an e-mail on what money came from where. It is so hard now how to guess on taxes

Actually, a single system email once a week at the city update along the lines of:
TAX 2000 x 40
SHUTTLE 20x 150
GARAGE 30 X 200 (10%)
----------------------------------
TOTAL 17,000
Now, that would be helpful and support activies of a city. It would even help manage the city in knowing how many cits are indeed being taxed (actually have a physical house andare onthe citizenship list).

When I was a mayor I hired a "Representative of Commerce & Trade". Basically each week he kept tabs of all the sales made in the city and the amount of money that the sales tax acquired. I could then easily figure if taxes needed to be raised or lowered and how well the city economy was doing. I also counted every structure in the city that was touched by housing tax, including its type and how much it was taxed. I could then figure out how much the city acqured from that tax.
