Well things are not looking up. The city I am mayor of is pretty much in full scale civil war, thanks to mostly 1 individual. Tarq is the drama server, that is for sure

Alright let me get into it. I don't want to come off as overzealous or anything, but I have worked hard as mayor, like most people do. The city is Fort Valhala. Founded by my old guild leader back in September. The city housed only our guild, and the guild was dying. My guild leader got busy in RL and really started to not show for weeks on end. Yea, we all understand that, so that was a big deal. He's also kind of a control freak, always in charge, I mean, he runs the guild, was mayor, and also ran an organization to unite the imperial guilds, called it COMPNOR (might know if from some books)

By loss of membership, I inherited 2nd in command of the guild. That was fine, I was always willing to help out. Soon though, He started to really takelong periods of time off, not showing for weeks on end. The guild was getting smaller, and I didn't have authority to recruit (or the ability). Deciding to see if I could help the dying level 2 city, I ran for mayor uncontested and won. Soon after, we're a bustling level 4 city with all the nessesities. Then he comes back, says "good job" and tries to beat me at an election to become mayor. Luckily people are not that dumb, and I win easy. Life goes on, he leaves again for a few weeks. The remaining 5 active players (Yes 5 actives) are all pissed off, since no leader is ever around. I decided finnally, after several months to give a go at running my own guild, and leave. Several of the actives follow with me, and join me (I only asked, they left on their own free will. I even wrote him a nice RP transfer letter and stuff).

He comes back and starts bitching at me for "stealing his guild" and stuff. I just say whatever. And it begins.

H runs in the election again, and gains some momentum against me, sure that is fine, I just ask my citizens to vote for me. He then asks for militia rights, so he can add guild members he recruits. I turn him down, saying that he should just send them to me, since even with a militia, I have always been on call to handle all citizen zoning requests. The city is very important to me, lots of people know I will drop what I am doing, and race to the city just to grant zoning rights to someone. Easy enough to understand. But he gets even more upset, and DEMANDS to be on the militia. I flat out refuse, and so the war starts. Eventually I add him to the militia, and the city is gainging citizens like mad, as he drags people into the city, just for votes. Me ... I've been only asking the guilds that are in the city already to get members that have been slow at getting citizens here, to help them along. Then, he accuses me of dirty politics and drags it to the forums, and after 2 deleted threads, decides to make an RP thread of it.

And that is it, in a nutshell.

You gave him militia rights?

So now he can go out and get alts from other servers to beef his numbers and vote you out...or in the least make your city a ghost town from all the empty houses if he loses.

You were doing everything right up to the point you gave him militia. You should have just handed him the keys to the mayor office at that point.

The power that comes with militia dictates that it only be given to those of like mind with the mayor who can be trusted completly. I would put no one on militia that I didnt trust with admin to my own house.

I agree, but there was alot of pressure to give him militia

After this election, I will make changes, if I win that is

Why don't you remove him from the Militia now, before it's too late?

Sounds like a pretty nasty situation all around. But if he's obviously making a power play to take over by simply bringing in more citizens to vote for him, take away that power.

If your opponent wants to win he will just recruit cross server lot trades for votes in the election. No matter how many real citizens you can get to vote for you he will inflate the number by giving zoning rights to players that play on different servers to just place a small house inthe city tovote for him. No matter what the pressure is this could be the death of your city! I would revoke militia rights ASAP before such dirty SWG politics can be employed.

Do not give the challenger the power to defeat you. If he wants to sway current citizens to re-elect him great. But to bring in new fake citizens to just pump his vote up is where this is destined to go if he keeps militia power.

I sent this out today after the city update. My weekly address to my citizens.

> Dear citizens of Fort Valhala;
>
> No doubt you are all aware of the troubles plagueing our fine city. I take this moment now to apologize to everyone. This "Civil War" as it is put has gotten out of hand. The true purpose of the Empire is lost because of this. We should be fighting the Rebellion, and trying to take back control of Naboo, Corellia and Tatooine, instead of fighting amonst ourselves.
>
> I have been accused of "Dirty Politics" to remain in power. I argue that my intentions for this city were pure, and never faltered. I work for the better of this city, and I have the citizens support to thanks for this.
>
> The civic election currently being held in fort Valhala has become tainted, and unruly. uncharacteristic tactics have been used by both sides, and for this I apologize. I wish this war to end, and for the city to get back to its regular cycle of activity, while my opponent pushes forward, talking of peace. A new low was struck today. Imperial Command and Blitzkrieg guilds have declare guild war on Reaper Squadron. As such, the Fort Valhala militia has been officially disbanded. New citizen requests will come to me. The militia can no longer be used as a political trick to gain votes. The citizens of the city are to decide from now on.
>
> With the abuse of the militia, the city has grown in numbers by about 17 citizens over the past few days. While growth for the city is good, I fear that the city will suffer due to this rapid and unorganized expansion.
>
> On another note, the city budget is almost complete. The outcome is somewhat reasonable, but not impossible to work with. It is my goal to make this city self sustaining, so that donations to the treasury will no longer be required. While this may still take some time to get, I will never turn away any donations any citizen wishes to make, but do not worry, the treasury is currently in good standing.

Yeah giving him militia rights was a mistake. I'm assuming that the new citizens aren't really contributing to the city and that the veteran citizens are aware of that fact.

I have been told by the biggest guild in the city that I am doing a good job, so that means something to me.

Wow man Good Luck. Sounds like you are handeling the situation in a pretty mature manner...I really liked the Email... That was some good writing.

My only advise would be that if you think you are on the verge of loosing the election, pick up anything of yours that you have placed in city hall that you'd like to keep.

Also it sounds like if worse comes to worse you would proboly have a good shot at starting a new city (I know..it's not the same :smileysad with the "real" Citizens of your city, that likley will not be happy with a power change.

Make sure you let us know how it turns out!
