Thread: Idea: NPC-containers in Cities

Hello great politicians of the galaxies. I am not a politician, but I have an Idea I would love to see in our player cities as well as Dev cities… so I guessed this would be the forum to see if this idea floats.

I am really into weaving stories and RPing as much as possible to make up for the lack of built-in content in SWG. Off the bat I have always loved the less traveled areas in the dev cities where the designers really put a lot of character into them. I am talking about the seedy avenues in Cornet’s industrial district, or the gazebos in Keren… places like that which have tons of unused potential. Our Player cities are not as detailed as the Dev cities, but I still think they have potential for the same types of stories.

However I feel greatly limited when I would like to use these areas as part of my stories/missions. Usually I wish to send other players to pick up items, and I like to choose a location that enhances the atmosphere and emotion I am trying to force upon the player. For example one of my favorites is sending players pick up sliced ID transponders (renamed Electronics GP Module) from a slicer/smuggler in some dark back ally.

Here is my problem. It is very immersion breaking for me to give out a mission to retrieve the stolen weapon plans or sliced ID transponders from a smuggler in cornet, then have my wife’s character be the smuggler for that contact… as well as 95% of all the contacts for my other missions.

SO here is what I would love to see… Place able NPCs or chests (like found in caves and dungeons) that act as some type of container. Something where I can drop off an item or two and set permissions for that items retrieval. For example: drop off a datacard and then list the players that can retrieve the item. That way we could send players to pick up this and that from real NPC BHs or Criminals and the immersion would not be broken by them yet again meeting my wife’s character. There NPCs could be accessible by any character, but they could only see and retrieve those items that they are listed for. That way several different people could use the same NPC for their own missions, yet none would interfere with each other because only listed characters could see and retrieve their items.

Such NPC containers could be added by the developers to their existing dve cities, as well as place able by mayors for player cities. We could even give them add barking that is triggered linked and triggered by the approach of a listed character… I do not think this is too much of a stretch from what we have in the game so far, and I think it would be a great tool for creating more player created content.

What say you?

I love it! It would certainly help me in running my various events. This would be a great master politician ability to have.

The NPC should have a cost associated with setting it up.

I'd like to add a few things if I may.

1. Set an expiry timer on the NPC so that it vanishes after a set period of time. Default 24 hours.
2. Toggle option to allow NPC to be attackable or not (good for those events and scenarios where you want some to go and kill such and such an NPC and loot an item, allow only one person to obtain the item, etc...)
3. If NPC is set to be attackable, you should also be able to set an aggressiveness level (it is either red or yellow; agressive or not).
4. Have NPC function similar to a pet in that you can give it rudimentary commands such as patrol, and stay.

This could go a long way toward the development of player-run missions. Something that I am still waiting for that the devs weren't able to deliver.

A container that you can set permissions on is great! Besides setting up missions and events to use them, they are also useful for artisans to drop off certain kind of items, leaving them so only specific people can pick them up.

I also would like to see this get worked into the game somehow.

It is a good idea but with everything else that is in development this won't be near the top of the list.

Something I am working on in our city is just using a small house, re-decorate it depending on who the contact is and then having the item stored in the house.

You can limit access and admin rights, the participants may have to search several location, if using a large house you then have multiple rooms to 'hide' the item in.
