After looking through the FAQs, it seems like it'll be pretty expensive. Not that that's a problem, I just need to know how much money I'll need to have before starting everything up.

it all depends on what you pay for the town hall. With a Townhall and 20 players I put 400K into my city to get it started.

My medium sized city with significant decorations and trainers research centre 50ppl Little taxes I pay for nearly all because I can
Upkeep 450k a week
Taxes 100k a week
Cost 350k a week to me every week
Plan on it
People will say they will contribute
They wont
They forget
Accept it

In a nutshell,the BASICcity costs depends on the city ranking.
"The city hall doesn't cost the city anything, but the city itself has a base maintenance fee that is dependant on the rank of the city.
* Outpost - 35k credits / week
* Village - 60k credits / week
* Township - 85k credits / week
* City - 110k credits / week
* Outpost - 35k credits / week
* Village - 60k credits / week
* Township - 85k credits / week
* City - 110k credits / week
* Metropolis - 135k credits / week"
Add to that:
+ streetlamps
+ trainers
+ mission terminal
+ Specializations (Clone center, Entertainment District, Medical Center)
Our city of approx 65 citizens cost 380K per week. Even with the Garage fees and shuttlefees, it only covers about 50% of the cost.
Oh, I also give new cits a free house, swoops and some credits too. Good thing I'm a Master Archatm,but with the anticipated reduction in the number of items on VENDORscoming out with patch 10 - I'm considering other career options. I don't think, having a MAX of 120 items on 2 vendors will keep me in business very long. Also, being Master Art, Master Arch and Politician, I certainly don't want to go more into merchant then I really need to. It was hard enough balancing a little combat before !!

A small town will cost under 100K per week, a large one with specialisation half a million or so. For pure maintenance therefore I'd say start on around half a million to give you a few weeks maintenance. Try to keep at least a months maintenance at the current level in the treasury at all times.
