Hello all,
With the abundance of cities out there these days, it seems difficult to attract new citizens. Even if you have a good amount of traffic, it's hard to always have someone on hand to greet people, explain to them what the city is all amount, and slip in the fact that the city is always looking for new citizens. Well, I came up with an idea a few weeks ago, and it's worked pretty well for us so far. After sharing it with a few other Mayors who liked the idea, I figured I'd share it here.
It's pretty simple... Make several items called "(City Name) Citizenship Information".. The item doesn't matter, I've been using dice.
Give these to your merchants, and ask them to sell them on their vendors for a small price (we've been charging 100 credits) with a description along the lines of this:
"Hello! Thank you for visiting our town! Do you like what you see here? Are you interested in finding an active and exciting city to move into? Would you like to become a part of a fun community? Well, (City Name) is always looking for new friendly, productive, and active citizens! By buying this item, you will notify us that you have an interest in moving in. Our Mayor will contact you soon to discuss the details of how you go about becoming a citizen of this bustling metropolis. Thank you for your interest, and please visit again soon.
"
The merchants simply keep an eye on their vendor sales, and when one of these items is sold, they forward the name of the buyer to the Mayor. The Mayor can then get in touch with this person about moving into the town.
In the past 2 weeks, we've sold about 10 of these items. 3 of which have already resulted in new citizens, and the rest of the buyers I am still discussing the details of what the town has to offer. (Although one person did admit buying the item by mistake, hehe.)
Anyways, just thought I'd share the idea.
Feel free to offer other ideas or suggestions on how to improve this technique, or other things you've found helpful in recruiting new citizens.

LOL, I'm sorry dude, that just sounds like something a prostitute would say! lol, sorry...
Great idea! Can the whole message fit in the description field? I've never tried it.

Hahaha, yeah, sorry. You can customize the message to fit the "theme" of your own town so it sounds a bit less..... seductive?
And yeah, the description field when selling items is actually pretty generous. When we ran a lottery, I could actually fit the entire prize list in the description of the raffle tickets.
