I was wondering if the dev's had any plans to make a "city planner" option available for the mayors to grant to citizens.

I am not asking for another profession.. because I believe it would be as much of a waste as the poli profession is (which i believe should not take skillpoints)

What we need is an option that allows a citizen to become a city planner. What this would allow the citizen to do is:

1. be able to view full extents of the city.. 450m radius.

2. ability to "paint lines" on the ground to mark out where structures "should go" and if possible.. make it so only the specific structure can be placed there. and make an option to "force city plan"

3. allow the relocation (with a users permission) to move their house and all contents "as is" to another set of co ordinates (within the city limits)

note: if the person refused, then the house would not move.

4. The ability to name or mark the lots that have been "painted" so that new home builders can choose from a list of lots. Possibly with a map of the entire city showing the lots that are available and allow the user to select the availablee lot they would like.

5. The ability to place houses on 45degree increments. (it is really hard to get a unique look and feel to a city when they are all basically the same.. erradict layour of checker boards) This would again work with the "painted" lots so that a user could not mistakenly place their house in the wrong spot.

6. Place buildings closer, I'm not sure how this could be fixed, I haveseen that the space around the buildings is usually for all the access ramps. this may not be avoidable.

7. The ablity to place the gardens fountains statues and the like, in accurate positioning. I have tried to place many of the structures like statues and have been fairly discrouaged. at the inflexibility of the system

8. The ablity to have the fully city show up on the map like game cities do. Would benice to see the full city layout. Or if there was a window that showed a city map that would be cool.

These are some ideas i have had from the many frustrating but enjoyable hours of city planning for mos tesla on tatooine (chilastra) and also from trying to plan the LT subdivision inKraytia on chilastra.

Well tell me what you think..

and i would love to know what the devs think about this.. if i'mout of my mind .. or if they think that something like this would actually be feesible.

Peace.

well i would say that it should go to the mayor.. BUT it needs to be available from the start of the city (unless they get the move house and all contents to work) cities need to be planned from the start.. not after you have gotten so big that the city is a mess already.

that or make it a novice poli skill

Well i guess the mayor could appoint themselves to be the city planner. I was just thinking of making the job of the mayor a bit easier.. more delegation.. less hands on.

Oh ya.. forgot..

I think also when a city is placed it would be cool if the terrain flattened like a camp out to 450m range

that.. or..

at least became even enought to be all buildable.

That way some of the terrain woudl stay.. it would just mellow abit.

Peace.

Giving it to the mayor would make a lot of sense considering they are suppose to plan the city. This would give you a reason to become mayor also. I think havinga planner for a city would be great.

There once was talk of a possiable City Engineer proffession that would have skills like this.

I think instead of haveing Mayor, City Engineer, etcas profession's but as a "rank" that you have to "run" for.

This way anyone could go and drop a city hall. As the city grew instead of xp togain skills with you would unlock more and more options. Once you had the base 10 ppl needed to startthe city you would unlock the aminites from all the lvl 1 politican skill boxes. Once you had the 20 ppl needed for lvl2 city then u unlock the lvl2 skill boxes, so on until lvl5 in which you unlock the master box.

The Mayor would also have the option the "hire" players for city staff positions such as City Architect/Engineer, Cheif of Police, etc.

Too be able to hold one of these positions would require master in a certian profession, Architect for City Architet/Engineer, any combat profession for Cheif of Police, etc..

City Engineer would have the ability to move houses w/o haveing to empty and redeedthem, place parks, gardens, fountians, etc.

Cheif of Police could add and remove ppl to the Milita, could citywarn (if itsever brought back)ppl, etc.

Those the only twoI could think of off the top of my head. This would give pplmore incentive to master a profession and keep it. Maybe make it so you had to be master in at least 1 novice or elite profession before you could place a city hall. Making it where you have to spend skill points to be a mayor and run a city IMHO isntthebestway to go about it.

Well said... At least someone else is thinking along the lines I am.

I had a discusion with a couple more people.. and they had heard rumors that city planner was droped because it was perceived as "greifing".. do to the fact that you would be moving peoples houses were they dont' want them..

I had to disagree, and say that if they put in a "request" system and the person beinga asked to move had a choice. Then it would not be greifing.

Also, if the house and contents could be moved in one shot.. most people will not complain. It is the problem that you put hours into designing your interior.. and having to move is a real pain.. and in some cases very difficult with the ammount of items that need to be moved.

I think that this would add a bit more depth to cities.. and make them even that much better.

Peace.

I think that the mayor should be able to delegate roles like city planners or civil engineers to citizens in the city. The mayor of my guild's city (Insurrection Outpost on Dantooine, Bria) doesn't want to be bothered with reorganizing the random jumble of houses he calls our city. So i have taken it upon myself to reorganize (with his and the guild's blessing) but the thing is the city is full of **edit** retards who refuse to move their houses because it would be too much of a hassle.

We need to have a function that allows us to move houses with very little hassle and that allows us to move abandoned houses in the way of development (there are 5 or 6 in IO that have like 100k maintences and the owners are never on anymore). At the very least homeowners should be allowed to redeed houses w/o having to /pickup all their stuff in it. If we were able to simply redeed a house and place it, with all the items in the same places, planning a city would much easier.

Now i know the arguments against this, that players would simply use redeeded houses as mobile storage houses thus making the inventory caps absolete. Come on now, you all know there are ways that the devs can get around such an exploit. They could make it so that the deed can only be in the inventory for such and such a time before the game wipes out all the stuff in it, forcing players to place it again within a certain amount of time (which is all we want to do anyways). They could also make it so that you can't redeed the house with items in it more than once in, say, a week (of course there'd have to be a ten minute grace period after the 1st placement so ppl can get it in the right position).

The idea of keeping the items in the house on a redeed is kinda a good idea.

But like you mentioned people would try to exploit it.

I think the idea of relocating a persons house within city limits. With them just answering a few questions would be cool.

Or how about an interface in the city hall that new people coming to the city can see the purposed city layout with free lots and they can just pick a lot from the city map that they want. And POOF there house is there.

I think some thought needs to go into player cities.. just having them is not enough.. we want them to be functional and beautiful.

Seeing what Smugglers Cove did with the naboo medium houses.. brought a tear to my eye. It is a work of art.

I just wish all the houses in the game could have been able to be placed that close.

This matter as you can tell is pretty near and dear to me.

We lost our guild city do to the "inactive players.. kill your city patch"

The problem was two fold.. we lost players.. ok... but we lost RADIUS too.. which made us lose even more players. By the time we realized what was going on someone else had taken our shuttle port. The loss did not jsut effect our guild.. it effected everyone on chilastra. Because they lost the shuttle to the tusken fort.

Oddly I didn't hear of too many other cities other then Mos Tesla getting the axe's.. I refer to that patch in guild as the "Mos Tesla Killer Patch"

If I had had the city planner option.. I could have gotten the rest of the extra people to move into the new lower radius.. and save the city.

There are alot of other things that would have helped too.. for instance.

With the "interface" of the city layout.. I would like to see maintenance on each building in the city.. AND be able (if a player has selected "allow maintenance donations") to pay for their maintenance so that their building would not go poof.

We lost our guild mall because we thought we had enough cash in it.. we did not. And the person that owned it never got the message to put money in till it was too late.

7 vendors with rares like krayt pearls and twin force crystals.. and at least 2 full suits of tusken clothing. 1 being mine.

Lastly I have to say.. when a city is placed.. i would love for it to flaten the ground like a camp.. and put up a wall around the 450m radius Like Eisley has.

I just think it would be cool.. and it would make the player cities.. LOOK like real cities. Not just a bunch of randomly placed houses.

Flat terrain will let people be more creative with their layouts. And having finer controls on placing the buildings.. like angles and allowing the buildings to be closer like naboo houses. Would be awesome.

I love player cities.. I just want to see them be the best they can be.

Peace.

I love the ideas in this thread.... However I think the abilities outlined should go in the "City Customizations" tree of politician... This makes sense and would make that line of skills very worthwhile...

I thinkmaster polticianneeds tobe something worthwhile to have and something desireable in a city, and this could help achieve that aim. Making politicians a hirable commodity among the different cities, and the skill sthat come with it awards to persons accomplished in this feild.. not just something given to someone who has held the position for X weeks as it is currently.

The ideas are very very good, even necessary, but I think it is the implementation that would make them excellent.
