Thread: Mayor for the Week Program

As we all know, upsetting an incumbant mayor of a large city is near impossible. Due to this, it is very difficult to get anyone to commit the time, effort, and skill points to run for mayor, so that a meaningful election can be held. To counter this, I have offered my citizens a "Mayorfor the Week" program. This program will allow interested players a chance to experience the Mayoral task.

To qualify for MftW, candidates must be on the official ballot the previous week. This proves that they have committed at least the basic skill points for Novice Politician. Last week we had two others on the official ballot, but they were only able to garner 2 and 4 votes apiece, due in large part to voter awareness that there was not way to unseat the incumbant, me (not that I am anything but loved by my citizens...).

This week there is a new ballot box in the city hall. On it are the three candidates. THIS ballot will determine the MftW. I asked all citizens to please vote on both terminals, to get candidates Politics XP, and to determine the MftW. After the next election cycle, while I expect to remain in my official position as Mayor due to voter apathy, I fully expect to lose the MftW vote. In fact, I'm almost lobbying against myself, just to let others share the experience.

Once a Mayor for the Week is elected, all mayoral duties will be passed to that candidate. Eamils will be forwards, decicison will be made, conflicts will be resolved. I will follow through on any command which is not irreversibly destructive (destroying the city hall, redeeding the shuttle port and losing our top listing, moving the Official Mayor's parking spot...) Every facet of city planning will be decided by the Mayor for the Week. I will adjust my spec as needed to accomidate thier wishes. Finally, a use for all that stagnant Politician XP!

I challenge all mayors to hold a similar program, get your citizens involved, and find out just how well they REALLY think you're doing.

After reading this overa few times, there's only one word that comes to mind - WHY ?

I'm I a little mesmerized as towhy one would do want to do this. What's the point ?

There's absolutely no reason:

  1. to ask citizens to frequently go to the Polls to vote

  2. for a player(s) to spend 500 apprenticeship points to become a Novice politician

  3. fora candidatplayers to attempt to get 50+1 votes

  4. for a Novice politician with few skills to run a city

just toplay mayor for a week.

I would think your citizens will get fed up:

  1. having to go to the polls every week to vote for someone

  2. not knowing who is actually 'really' managing and responsible for the city

  3. not know the level of political skill one mayor has and the next mayor

Most players are perfectly fine not everbeing mayor. Mayors who devote theirtime, money and energy to become the mayor are there for the longhaul. There's definately better ways then this to get citizens involved.

While I can appreciate the fact that an incumbent mayor is difficult to unseat....the amount of tediously slow advancement requires a higher level of dedication than many other professions. Generally the sitting mayor is a popular if not unanimous choice of the city residents. I serve at the pleasure of my citizens, and when they no longer support my office, i will step down, election or not. The real reason more mayors arent challenged is because few of us want the tedium that levelling requires, and are just trying to serve our friends/citizens. Just my opinion, not carved in stone!

I understand that sometimes we (meaning politicians) just want a "thanks" or a nice pat on the back "Good job!". And that may be the impetus for your program.

I'm certain that the majority of my citizens have no idea all the hard work and time that goes into being a mayor. Even still, most of them know I work hard and for the most part enjoy my position.

For those who want to share in the fun (there is fun) of running a city, I've begun setting up a small government and created some positions for others to fill. This gives them some responsibility should they want it, but not take away from any of my own tasks.

In the end, we are left with a stronger city. A city that can function nearly round the clock because it has citizens who are knowledgeable about the workings of the town and have the authority to make decisions even with the mayor being around.
