last week in politics

woohoo, another week...

nothing really happened this week besides me standing/sitting around and chatting with random folks, although I consider that part of my mayoral job description I'm assuming that most folks are still either in JTL beta or isn't logging on coz everyone else is in JTL beta, so the city's more empty than usual. the next few weeks would probably test my sanity to the limits, as they prepare to take JTL onto TC. I need to talk to a few folks about padding up the treasusy soon, and maybe a mayoral shelter I might escape to another server for a bit, or at least not log on to TC as much. I hope the new rush of folks won't bring too much chaos into the city

I was thinking about going to different servers to visit people's cities, but I only have 10 toons (more if I sneak my bf's account)... so I might have to use disposible characters instead, but I'll have to earn money as I go so it might take me a while I'll also have to wait until I have time, and that thing called "school" doesn't help

... and for the record: I don't mind chatting with nice folks, but calling me sucky then msging me again is probably not a good idea. yes, that means you guys can msg me on TC providing that you realize I'm just another player, not a dev/QA/CSR. my messenger info is also in my profile.

so how's your city this week?

I've been attempting to be more active in the politics forum and I recently leveled up two characters on Testcenter so I can actually well...test any city changes if and when we get them.

Helios

-1884 -6316 Tatooine, Scylla Galaxy
147 Citizens 395 Structures
Research Center
Income Tax 0% Property Tax 0% Sales Tax 0%
Travel cost 100, Garage Fee 0.

Treasury at 3.7m, average weekly cost 660,500c.

A recent census shows the primary guild, the GTF comprises 50% of the population and has 41 undeclared members living in the city. Potential total population is 188 citizens. The census was done by hand using windows mode and Microsoft Excel. As always /petition, a method to save a text file for guild member and citizen lists.

We were contacted by another guild and the reserved space for guild enclaves has been turned over to them. They will be the 7th guild to spend time in our city. Three have since moved on to start their own cities and 4 guild folded.

Despite using Real Life Email addresses for all local shops, we still have 4 abandoned buildings blocking progress. I recently emailed them again and pointed out the free 10 day re-trial for SWG. Several people have used that so log back in to say hello but none of the abandoned house/shop owners.

We passed the 200 vendor mark and have an abundance of Armorsmiths, Weaponsmiths and Tailors. We as always need more Bio Engineers, Chefs and Medical Crafters. We have encouraged and helped level up 7 new doctors, to continue to provide local buffs.

Active recruitment of novice entertainers continues and we are able to staff the cantina about 50% of the day. Still missing most of the Master Dancers and Master Musicians who have mostly left the game for other massive’s.

This Wednesday we are having another Helios Meet & Greet with prizes, so the neighbors can meet each other. We are holding it twice in one day to permit the European locals to attend as well. We have approximately 35 European players that are active, the remainder being primarily USA time zone players.

Future development has us theoretically hitting 200 citizens near JTL with 5 super-producer merchants (several accounts, factories, static harvester farms etc) committed to being Shipwrights.

The greatest difficulty seems to be player moral as long term players retire from crafting or quit the game outright. New player numbers are out the roof so we continue to offer a welcome place for players new to SWG, with many locals volunteering as Newbie Helpers. Still I find that attrition will continue as long term friends and acquaintance leave, despite the growing guild and city membership.

Well...this week was okay. I ran around placing new gardens lol...(Finally got trained on that) I held a city council meeting and I thought things were working out just fine, but was sadly mistaken. Our entire group agreed on our major issues but a few did not and left the city because of it. At first I felt bad but realized that it isn't my fault and I can't change things for them. I am planning this week on redoing the city militia, and talking to a few people about moving their houses. (am hoping they will go poof soon.) I want to be able to move the shuttleport to the center of town.

As far as everything else I am very happy with my city, people, and being mayor. lol my motto has been..."I just want to make the city pretty." LOL.

Our city is running at a cost of about 423,000 per week and the citizens seem to be really happy about that. I am trying to bring us back out of costs (instead of manufacturing centers..no title.) Because our city members think that there is no difference and really don't want to pay for that. We did start a monthy contribute (from city members...the active ones lol) of about 200k per person. Most are pleased with this instead of taxes.

Thanks for you time..will let you know more as we go.

WORK IN PROCESS I have a meeting to attend...bah,,,still in meetings...Ill finish this tomorrow

-- This week in Aurora -- October 4, 2004

General News:

Aurora is a great Rebel metropolis on Naboo. Though the planet is overrun with Imperially aligned players, Aurora remains a sanctuary for Rebel players with over 90% of our community aligned towards the Rebel cause. More and more of Aurora is joiing the fight every night. This effort has been lead by the BOTD Military Activity Council, the E-Den Council and other leaders from Aurora. The city's GCW activity continues to be very quiet, as a result of theJedi grind occuring after patch #10. Many of our finest GCW participants have left the war to seek out the path of the jedi.

Building an online community is a difficult thing to do, and to do it correctly is almost impossible. To help the community of Aurora grow to meet the demands of its citizens the city has surveyed those nice people that choose to call Aurora their online home. We use the results from these surveys to develop new events and ways to make our citizens enjoy their limited online time. Here is yet another peek at one aspect of why Aurora is a great community.

One of the biggest challenges for a community like Aurora is to get the entire communityengaged in large-sclae hunts, raids or events.

The full report can be found here:

http://www.rbectel.co.uk/html/swgaurora/downloads/surveyresults1.pdf

City Mall and Merchants:

Aurora is a zero sales tax city. This means lower prices on every item on the vendors in Aurora. Stop by and check out what the 20+ vendors are selling.

The Aurora mall offers high quality products, at low prices and is only a 1 minute ride from Moenia, or a quick shuttle trip through the Aurora Shuttle port. The vendors are restocked every few days and the city is seeing a steady stream of customers to our citizen's vendors. With such great vendors as Hadrian's Deeds and Furniture, Jor'Ran's Resources, Yabu's Droids, Yhaigs Clothing, a Omilossk's Medical Supplies, Ioan's Smuggler Supplies and all the numerous miscellaneous vendors, Aurora is able to offer high quality goods and products at low prices. The mall is on the western edge of town. Stop by and get that item you have been looking for!

The city of Aurora is undergoing a community redevelopment project, and the city's mall is one of the first things to be re-worked.This weekthe new mallwill debut with a newcantina servingas the the mall, new vendors and a whole new business district with merchant tents and more vendors. Check it out next week when we are ready tore-open our businesses with raffles, parties and hunts.

City Finances:

With the new tax structure in place the city is earning approximately 50,000 credits per day. The city continues to remove gardens every week prior to the maintenance cycle. This reduces the maintenance costs by 250k. It is unfortunate that taxes are not sufficient to support the city with all its gardens in place. We hope to get more gardens sponsored and the new city plan is designed with this in mind.

The Hadrian Augustus Foundation for Fiscal Balancing continues to support the city treasury on an as needed basis. Thanks to everyone that has helped by donatingmoneis to the city treasury. People like you help make this a great community.

City Governance:

The city re-development program has been launched. All citizens have been asked to work with the city council and its representatives to move their houses so that we can imporve the city's organization and provide better city services to our community. For those friends that are thinking about moving to Aurora, check out our website at SWGAurora.com (note no WWW). You will find information the city's business initiatives, finances, the various PA's living in town and the charter that serves as the foundation for the community.

City Event Guide:

Finally, several guilds are continuing to run weekly hunts out of Aurora. BOTD and E-Den have standard hunting nights and all folks are welcome to join them. Within Aurora there you will find the following PA's: BOTD, E-DEN, IF and New Order. Check out the discussion groups at www.swgbotd.com and www.enforcers-guild.com for more information. If anyone in Aurora has an event they would like to advertise, please send an in-game email to Hadrian, Obeci or Yabu.

That is about all that is happening this week in our great community.

Pappi, if you come to Naritus, just send me a /mail or /tell in game and I'll send you travel money to go about the city visiting different locations.

As for my city. Ran the monthly maintance run, and found about half the houses are not following the rule about having the mayor/me on their admin list (so I can check their maintance). Usually it's not so bad, but this month it's just horrid. So a guild message was sent out, and hoping that poeple will fix things soon. But it's telling me of a sad trend of selfish parinoid people joining our city/guild that use to be very helpful.

Hoping that it was just bad militia, not letting people know when moving in about adding the mayor to admin, I removed everyone from militia, but those I know who are fully trained in moving people in, which is the guild officers. Ofcourse this caused a big stink from people, and one person even started to accuse me of being the cause behind rebels coming to town to grief.

We recently had a group of bases put in, south of town and ofcourse bases, expecially a group of them, cause the other faction to show up. Expecially when you have a cloning center, and shuttleport near theed. (etc...) Yet they swear it's because we don't have as many militia members now, that can /cityban. I tried to explain that /cityban doesn't do much good, but people wouldn't listen.

The city is thriving with 123 citizens. But at this point, I'm disappointed in the quality of the players. I've seen an increase in selfishness, parinoia, personal fights/attacks, close minded people, etc... The older players are in JTL beta (or the village)so everyone else is running wild it seems. We've gotten through worse it seems.

Tusken's Bane, Tatooine - Chilastra

We have had a busy week lately. On 10/2, we had our Tusken Day celebration which started off withspeech on the long history of our servers first player city (long before PCs were implemented) and a raffle. The raffle brought a large gathering of people to the newly decorated town. For the celebrations, the streets were lined with Tatooine banners flapping in the wind, and a bantha parking lot/pen was created (which drew a large crowd and a lot of laughs). I'll be posting pics soon. The raffle saw the sale of some 270+ tickets for prizes that inlcuded an AV21 speeder, glass top table, great comp armor, houses, Wookie Life Day orb, and many more. About 60 people showed up. I had a "surprise" tusken raid scheduled to happen as I gave my speech but whoever was running live events that day dropped the ball leaving many disappointed people. Later in the day, the Cantina Crawl came to our cantina resulting in about 30 entertainers putting on a great show for us.

A new guild has moved into town reshaping an otherwise under-used hill side and made a welcme addition. Many individuals also took up residence the day of the raffle. All in all, I believe we added around 15 citizens this week.

The commercial sector reevitalization is still underway with the construction of a new mall (pa hall) being placed to anchor the open air merchant pavillion. The never used theatre finally poofed as well opening up valuable realestate.

It's been a good week in Tusken's Bane.

GHOST TOWN

Lowca Galaxy - Planet Naboo

Primary Guild - Ghost Regiment(GR)

A place for all you cowboy Rebels out there !!!

I am excited that we have finally been able to placeour city hall. Ghost Town is currentlya city with only 23 Citizens, but big plans. I have seen some issues this week with citizens disappearing to the beta, but it has worked out well for the crafters in the intelligence it has been gathering.

Pappi let me know when you are Lowca (Papa/Nodo/Frodo)

We completed a layout plan months ago and are finally getting to start it

can be see at http://ghost-regiment.cjb.net under Pictures

I have started a trend as Mayor sending a mail to all citizens every week to give them an update of our progress. Here is a sample of the first:

** CITY HITS 20 RESIDENTS **

With the help of Storm', Deaftones and Tekk, I am proud to say we made the numbers for the next level in city status. Sunday evening 9/26/2004 at the next city update we will advance to the next level. A couple of perks that will come with this advancement is a Cantina, Medium Gardens, a Garage and a Bank. We will now have the ability to locally store items in the safety deposit box, which should help all of us, and Papa will be placing a Cantina to the East of the City Hall. Nodo has a few nice Medium Gardens that will be placed based on the city layout. I want you all to be very proud to call Ghosttown home.

** TIME TO TALK TAXES **

This is the least favorite of any topic, but I need some input. I would like to keep the taxes at 0 for all but things like the Garage and in the future the Shuttleport. In order to accomplish this task and keep us in the black I will be running missions with Frodo on Dantooine as much as possible and will directly contribute to the city hall treasury. I have already placed 400k into the hall to keep us going for a few weeks, and will appreciate those of you with the means, to also make deposits as you can. I believe this will keep the costs down of our newer members and make us a more attractive place to live. I will have Nodo create a ballot box where we can vote, but please if you have any ideas forward them to me. I would also like to ask for Volunteers to sit on a City Council andsee if we can vote on your favorites.

** CITY HALL RENOVATION **

I am excited to say that the city hall looks and feels more like a home. With several pieces and parts the hall has been decorated and visitors will actually believe we live here Please stop by when you get the chance.

** HUNTING ANYONE???? **

I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to send me an email on your special event to be published in the news. If you will be getting a group together to just solo on Dantooine or something more challenging like the Death Watch Bunker or Corvette??? Drop me a line and I will get it out to the city.

There are now 3 Terminals in front of the City Hall:
General, Rebel and Bounty Hunter

** RECRUITING **

I will begin the search for a couple of guilds that we might want to join us here in town. If you have any connections with other guilds let them know the exciting things we will be doing here. All I ask is that they are primarily a Rebel guild as we hope to have a base or 2 in the near future.

Faithfully yours
Mayor Papa Smurf

I am incredibly new to the political aspect of SWG. I am the first mayor of Landsend, a town centered around entertainment and role-playing on Naboo in the Starsider galaxy.

The useful links post has been an incredible help, and every day I am learning more about my profession. After two and a half weeks of being a city, we have 17 citizens with more people expressing an interest every day.

If anyone has any advice for a new mayor and town, I would greatly appreciate all the help that I can get.

Gold Beach - Corellia, Bloodfin

Thursday afternoon I will be getting enough XP to get our Rebel Terminals in. We currently have 43 citizens at the moment andwe're starting to openly recruitguildmembers again know that we know our current group pretty well. It still amazes me being a fairly new citythat we even havea city on corellia expecially on the bloodfin galaxy.

Our current goal is to maintain what we have. Shuttleport may be nice if we can place it but not too important at the moment, plus Kurrin and the restArcadia's folks love our money . Now that some of our crafters are getting to know there professions we might get our Mall up and running soon.

Citizens of Haven Island,

Again another busy week for our small island our population is now running at 85 citizens, enough to advance to the next level if it wasn’t for the planetary cap.

I’d like to welcome the following residents to the island

• Arno
• Basco
• Revarn
• It’Arrow
• Katkah
• Yinmay

Meet your Militia

Civic amenities
==============
Residents are reminded that there is a full set of crafting stations for your use that can be found in one of the side rooms in the town hall.

Also we have a large set of skill trainers in the town hall for your use. I’m proposing a review of these skill trainers to ensure that we are meeting the requirements of our citizens so please visit the Haven Island forums to cast your vote as to what you would like to see.

Industrial structures
==============
With the recruiting we are quickly approaching capacity on our little island although people are still asking to join our community. I’d like to ask those people who own these structures, if it does not inconvenience you too much, to move them to our sister island “industrial island” at -1555, -5460 to free up space for houses.

I’m working on creating a zoned off area for small factories which will not get in the way of the city expansion. Please contact me or Boaby Fett if you would like more information

City improvements
==============
You may have noticed some small changes around the city, more lighting, gardens and statues. Don’t worry I’m just trying to brighten the place up a bit

Hello Folks- I'm new to this forum but have been a mayor for many, many months. So, thought I would join in!

Our city is Artisan Arches on Naboo, Tempest Server. Current cost is 745K / week. We have lots of gardens, trainers, lights, etc and we are a research center. Population is around 65 citizens.

We have been losing people steadily over the past month or two due to attrition. One or two a week, but its starting to be a problem because we don'tmany any new people moving in. Mostly the attrition is from serious gamers who ground out Jedi as soon as they could and are now bored with the game. Its unfortunate that they are slowly leaving, but that's the life-cycle of games so its not unexpected.

So, if any cities on other servers want to do some citizen exchanges, that would be great. Please contact mayor Tree or alt Stilgar on Tempest. Also, if any new players on Tempest are reading this, we would love to have you move in to our city. We take good care of our citizens and offer free starter houses and lots of help for crafters (tent space, free resources, factory time, etc).

As for treasury and taxes, our city has never had taxes since its inception around December 2003.I have always paid for the city myself from my crafting and resources sales. My alt Stilgar is a "super-producer" merchant with many vendors selling high-end weapons and resources (have 45 fixed harvesters). The resources vendor is right in the middle of town and many citizens buy from there. Prices are generally in the 1-2 cpu range. So rather than charge taxes, we just sell resources from the fixed harvesters and use the profits to pay for the city.

However, about a month ago I decided that the city could help support itself with a small (2%) property tax increase and a 10% vehicle repair fee increase. But, I noticed that after implementing this tax, the amount of credits I had to put in to the city to keep it at 5 million was virtually the same as it always was. So, it seems that none of the taxes actually make it to the city, with possible exception of the shuttle fees. So, in my mind, this is the biggest bug for cities at the moment, and really needs some DEV attention. There should be an income report on the city terminal telling you how much the city has made in revenue so far in the cycle, or in the last cycle. But anyway, this is not a wish-list thread so I'll say no more. Since taxes seemed ineffective, I removed them and we are back to having no taxes at all.

Also, I try to regularly reset the city specialization to research center every week. Since I do a lot of crafting myself, I notice that it seems to help with improved chances of "great success" on experimentation and fewer critical failures. This need for Research Center specializationto be reset every week is yet another bug... but I won't go there.

Overall, it has been quiet in our citywith JTL beta keeping people busy, but I have noticed more people in the game over the last week or so. We are getting ready to put up a museum next to city hall, and will try to decorate it with all the artwork, sculptures, statues, and rare items that the citizens can come up with. Not sure if citizens will just donate their goods to the museum or need to be admins so they can feel like they still own their stuff. But, that will be worked out.

Feel free to drop by our city and say "Hi"!
