Thread: Zoning: would it hurt for it to be at Novice, and broader in scope?
For so many of us, the potential to build our own comminities was what enticed us to think about PRC's and politicians in the first place. Whether we wanted a real Imperial town, or a roleplaying town, or just a town where we could kick out those idiots who have been driving us up the wall for the past two months, many of us have dreamed about building very SPECIFIC communities. While no PRC can be truely private, you can't keep someone from walking around in it for example, stopping unwanted groups or individuals from building there was a big deal to us. The potential for city griefing is very high through grief-placement of buildings.
It's a little better now that we can put in zoning laws at Civics I, but that still leaves a week where our towns are vulnerable. As we can't redeed the Hall, we can still get saddled with people dropping factories on the front steps of the City Hall, or entire groups moving in and taking over a community, their hard work, their buildings, and their funds. In addition, it is my understanding that your zoning laws only cover the amount of territory for the Rank that your city currently is; therefore if you are a rank two city, another large group can just place at the edge of your territory, declare residency, and vote in their own person the next week. This will be a major source of grief conflict in the GCW and between PA's, I'm very sure.
I'd propose the change of moving zoning laws to Novice Politician, and extending those laws to the potential city perimeter, IF all residents within the potential perimeter agree to the zoning laws within 3 days, with a three day moratorium on new buildings while the city is being established. This way no one can force a city on anyone else, and no one can move in uninvited. Even with the zoning laws extended to a diameter of 900m around the city hall, it still leaves tons of buildable land for individualsas there's so many locations that just can't hold a city.
I'd love to hear other people's thought on this.

i don't think its that big of a deal. if you want to make sure you have civics I first, then you and your friends just need to put up a couple houses near someone elses city, and vote your politician up to civics 1, then start your own city, and immediately set up zoning rights.
just make sure the other city knows you're not there to try and take over ![]()

*chuckle* So instead of just moving it to Novice, you think moving everyone's houses to another city, voting, and moving back is sensible? Or that the other city is really going to like that idea themselves? Sorry for laughing but . . . . No, I really hate having to think of a "beat the mechanics" way of doing something that a simple change to the rules could do instead, especially when changing that rule really doesn't hurt or hinder anyone.

well no, i don't obviously think its better ![]()
rumor has it its moving to novice anyways, so hopefully this argument is moot ![]()
and.... you don't need to move your house, just your residence. buying a few small houses to plop down for a bit wouldn't be too hard.... unless a lot of your friends have PA halls for homes.... can you even declare residence in those?
Yes, you can . . . my residence is our Hall. ![]()
I still think that would be terribly unfair to the other up-and-coming city to first take advantage that they don't have Civics either, build in their city, vote for someone else, say "thanks for letting us use your city hall for a while!" and take off. *shakes her head* I know I can't do that to another city.
I also don't hold with rumors, unless the starter of that rumor posts under a red name. Until they say its changed, I'll go with it's not final that it will change. Same thing goes with the "rumor" that city halls will go back down to 50k. Until I see it officially, it's still 100k. ![]()
Even if they do move it to Novice, it still would not be moot unless they also extend zoning to the maximum potential. Yes, I know the "grief" possibilities of this (outposts controlling huge diameters of property and never growing) but I think the instances of that are going to be much much fewer and farther between than the forced takeover and building theft griefs from people building on the edge of the used zone.

I got the impression that Zoning Rights just covered the placements of Med Centers, Cantinas, and Theaters. Does it also encompass housing??
Yes, it does, from how we're understanding Vass' post on TC. Originally it WAS just going to be for med centers and hospitals, but they've changed that.
