Sounds like maybe he deleted his character?

Don't houses poof if the owner deletes?

Houses do, but houses are privatly owned. Cities should not. (and, not to sound sarcastic, but we all knew she was deleting char, just weren't expecting city to poof on us)

I don't know about the ownership, but the City Hall is the mayor's residency. So it maybe follows that to be resident of the city hall you have to be the 'owner' of it.

As I undestand it though, deleting the character does not delete the character's buildings if the maintenance is being paid. Maybe the city hall is managed differently to normal houses.

Either way its bad news for a lot of people if their mayor gets disgruntled enough to quit the game.

From my experience, cancelling the account does NOT delete the buildings, and I've had my subscription lapse a little bit because of credit card changes...and my city did not poof.

Deleting the character does delete buildings, though. We found that out the hard way when some hologrinders deleted their characters when they were given a profession they didn't like...and we were suddenly a city-funded house less.

Cancelling shouldn't do it - they keep your character available for you to come back to, server space allowing.

In my experience, i've only seen houses go poof when a chr has been deleted. This tends to happenwithin 24-72 hours, but can take a week or more accordingto the devs

Ok, mayors, what ever you do, DO NOT, I repeat do not cancel you account while your mayor. Your city tends to poof. Every stinking time. Our city, a level 5 metropolis, with all facilities way out in the boonies got wiped out when our mayor left swg. Then the power that be were supposed to help us, but alas, they did not. So, here we are, building up another city, get to level 2. Don't know what happened, but our then mayor must have canceled as well. City poofs. Anyone see a problem here?

City Hall should not identify an individual as 'owner' it should identify a registered mayor (a title) as one. If a mayor quits, resigns, closes their account - whatever, the hall should continue in existance and cycle through elections until a registered candidate wins an election.

Very bad

City Halls should be nigh on indestructable by anyone or anything unless there just are not enough citizens to support it. A mayor, either on purpose or by accident should have no power to kill off a city.
