Proposal for Mayoral resignation.

Reading through these boards most novice politicians seem to have encountered this situation. You are a proud citizen of a well managed town with an active Mayor. Unfortunately the Mayor decides that he/she has had enough of the game and would like to move on. They announce their intention to leave the game and set about finding a replacement and "training" them up. They cancel their account and set about handing over the keys to the city.

The new candidate achieves novice politician and registers to run "against" the current Mayor. The city has 64 citizens so the new candidate needs 33 votes to assume control. Due to player attrition the new Mayor cannot achieve the 33 votes needed to assume control (even with the current Mayor voting for them). Most of these "empty " houses are stocked full of maintenance and are not likely to burn down in a hurry.

So we are in a quandary, the old Mayors account is about to expire and he is unable to hand over the reins to a new Mayor.

I’ve had a long think about how we could manage this and I’d like to get some thoughts from the other politicians, maybe even one of the development team.

All proposal assume that there are a minimum of two Mayors running in the weekly election, the incumbent and an other.

Proposal 1:

The incumbent votes for one of the other candidates running. By doing so he is endorsing this other candidate for mayor and removing himself from the running. He will be presented with a confirmation dialog stating that he will be retiring from the election. Any votes that are currently registered for him will be release and that citizen can vote again for one of the other candidates. The incumbent will retain all privileges until the end of the election at which point the mayoral duties will pass to the winner. If there is more than one candidate running the one that receives the vote from the current Mayor will be flagged as "Endorsed" to highlight that this person is the departing Mayors preference.

Proposal 2:

System stays as it is today, but the automatic votes that go to the incumbent Mayor are only counted if the player has logged on in the last fortnight. This is not the same as the 6 week rule which removes the player from the city headcount. All this effects is the right to automatically vote.

I’d welcome any comments as to potential problems and if/how this could be exploited.

However I don't agree with Proposal 1, given the fact that although the Mayor may feel inclined to vote for his opponent, that doesn't mean the rest of the city's citizens have that much faith in the new runner. Obviously a situation like that would be a rare occurance, but it wouldn't be fare to remove the possibility form the game altogether.

Proposal 2 sounds much more reasonable. But obviously there could be a situation where the Mayor is planning a long break due to various reason that will last more than a few weeks. He may even check in with the city, and announce his departure and the date of his return, after taking care of everything the city could need and seeing that enough Militia members will be on hand to use /grantzoningrights for new potential citizens.

I think the best option, and the simplist option, is to add an option to the ballot box that will allow you to remove yourself from the race so long as someone else is running. If the current mayor removes himself from a race, all incumbent votes will also be removed from the tally. Now the only situation I see, is what would happen in the case of a tie between two new comers, when the mayor has dropped out of the race?

I like your idea. I wonder if ..... the mayor has to vote for one of the two before he/she leaves. In the case of a tie, the mayor's vote counts as two. If the election were that close in the first place, the city might have a new mayor the next week anyways, so I don't see counting the mayor's vote as two being unfair. Besides, the mayor is usually (though not always) the main contributor as far as finances and time, and their opinion should matter some what

But please... give us a better way to resign!

Proposal 1 is in effect saying that if you vote for one of your opponants then you are removed from the ballot paper, I like this, we changed mayor very early and there are many reasons you may want to do this.

Its only important for the big cities but were stuck at Village :/

How about 'No' on proposal 3...

However, I like thefirst two proposals... in fact I like both of them a lot.

The problem with just one or the other of them is thatneither wouldapply in all situations. I have seen scenarios where mayors leave a city, but still play regularly and want to resign (maybe even go on to mayor for another city, like Riis), and I have seen city's where the mayor just vanishes in a puff of smoke, never to be seen again... Between the two of these proposals (if they were implemented) cities could be protected against inactive, and disinterested leadership, and mayors wishing to leave could avoid being greifed by a citizen-base who wishes to keep them in office.

This really is a win-win situation for all involved.

A simplier solution might be to add an option to the city terminal where the current mayor can select the type of election. The current type or a popular vote where the mayor is chosen by 51% of the people who voted instead of 51% of the citizens in the city. The 100% guaranteed voter turnout method, while great for getting xp, in the long term will kill player cities as it is now.

I think that votes shouldnt be automaticly counted, votes have to be readded every week like in real elections, we have a problem in our city that our mayor has left game for a while for rl reasons and they're stuck as mayor, we have loads of inactive citizens and only a few people vote each week so we are finding it impossible to get a new mayor so we are just waiting for the town hall to get destroyed due to lack of maintainance and then we're going to place a new one, a really annoying way to get a new mayor but it seems its the only way.

The first proposal is the best. I agree that the citizens may not have the confidence in the new mayor and their vote shouldn't automatically count towards the only remaining candidate should the mayor resign...but what choice do they have? The incumbent could vote for the new candidate and in doing so he/she removes him or herselffrom the election. The second candidate gets all the votes and must wait for the update before assuming the role of mayor. If the citizens who had voted for the incumbent are not happy with the new candidate, they can either leave the city, or enter a new candidate they do support and elect him or herinto office. Either way, if they don't support the candidate he/she will make mayor anyway as there is no one running agains him/her. We just encountered this very same problem. Our mayor was leaving and I entered the race. The first week I fell one vote short. Second week I won, but it was such a hassle. If he could have just resigned, I could have started the process of rebuilding our city, but that had to wait. It's very difficult as it is, plus if you have a major city with a lot of inactive votes, you may never get a new mayor elected.
