Thread: Idea for spreading the population out of just 3 main cities

For lack of a better place to post this, I post it here. If anyone can refer me to a better forum to post this idea on, let me know.

Like many veterans, I remember the "good old days" as many of us call it. People were all over the place. My first character started out in Nashal, a then bustling city on Talus. My second, and current, started in Mos Espa. The cities weren't jam-packed with TONS of people, but almost every city (with the exception of those without shuttleports) were moderately populated. I have an idea of a way to make a move back to that.

This would take a lot of work to program, but it'd make life in SWG more palatable. Here goes:

Why not give benefits to different attributes for being a member of a certain planet. I have this Wanderer thing in my status window. Maybe a timer could be put in to track whether or not you spend x percentage of active (non-afk) time in a planet, you become a resident of that planet, and enjoy the benefits that the planet has to offer. Here are some examples:

Rori-residents recieve a bonus of +5 to armor crafting and +5 to armor experimentation

Talus-residents recieve a bonus of +5 to weapon crafting and +5 to weapon experimentation

Naboo-residents recieve a bonus of +5 to entertainment healing xp (since Naboo is one of the best looking cities)

Lok-residents recieve a bonus of +5 to dodge and +5 to all damage outputs (since it is a pirate/combat world after all)

I would suggest making the starting planets have less effective bonuses, or bonuses based on xp. Like you get more xp for being a resident on a starter planet (which would help the new people who start there) and bonuses to skill mods for being residents of some of the more advanced planets.

In real life when you ask someone where oil comes from, they say the Middle East someplace. Diamonds are from Africa, silk from China, ect. If this were implimented, you could say Weapons come from Rori, structures from Dantooine, ect. I think it'd be cool, it'd give everyone a slight bonus (doesn't have to be earthshaking. People pay good money for +5 skill taps, so I'm sure that they'd respond to even a low bonus for being a resident of a certain planet). More than anything, it'd make it so that not everyone is based out of Coronet and Theed.

Another good idea would be factional bonuses. To make "rebel" worlds and "imperial" worlds. It could still work in spite of the crackdown, because it's natural to earn a better reputation on a planet that has more of the people you are trying to impress on it, regardless of whether or not you can talk out in the open about it.

I do think that allowing some level of player interaction in NPC cities would be a great thing... I always sort of hoped (before cities and politician went live)that by having a really high townsperson faction standing I would be able to be mayor of Tyrena or somewhere else... and that people would be able to move into these cities as an alternative to starting there own. I enjoy participating in a player city as I currently am, but do think some player involvement in the NPC cities would be a good thing.

Also, to address the first poster, I think this idea has potential, and I like the thought of being able to say such and such product is generally more remarkable when it comes from such and such planet, however that too would cause it's own variety of concentration around the galaxy, though likely a single city on each planet as awhole varietyof crafter would congregate in order to receive the bonus.

What if the NPC citys were given bonuses similar to those currently allowed to player cities... what if Tyrena could be a 'Manufacturing Center', or an 'Improved Job Market'. This could cause more draw to the less utilized NPC cities as well... I do miss cruising the smaller cities and still seeing people around way back... it was a lot of fun, and everyone had there own city that they were most familiar and comfortable with.

This can be done to an extent in player cities, but anyone can leave their residency in a player city, but play 99% of their time in say Coronet. Also the same benefit can be found on any planet. With this idea, people would be forced (if they want the bonus) into moving out somewhat. Even if there was one city on each planet that had everyone after this, it'd be better than having one city on the server that had everyone.

Player cities already have this ability to a certain extent. A city can designate itself as specializing in areas like entertainment, crafting, research, etc. which gives bonuses to those areas within their city. Adding the same thing per planet would still not really help with NPC cities being empty.

And I don't think it's because everyone is hanging out in player cities either, because usually when you visit one you only see two or three people around. I think part of the problem is that there are less people playing the game now than before player cities went live.

One solution would be to redesign the NPC cities to include apartment style housing & shops that players could rent....Or also allow the suburbs of the cities to be expanded upon so that the "downtown" of the NPC cities woud still be a hub of player activities such as shopping, traveling, training, etc.
