What happens if the current mayor drops the poli profession when there is no one running against them?

Better beat up those Auto-voters then
Nothing will happen except your city will degrade over time.

Unfortunately this is true. I lost my fourth election this week, despite the fact that our mayor has announced his retirement, endorsed me, sent out e-mails on my behalf, mostly quit playing the game, and has probably even dropped the Politician profession by now.
It's getting closer each week as the population slowly dwindles and more VERY casual (less than once a week) players are finding out about the election, however. This week, ten more voteswould have made the difference.
My current plan is to become a militia member with zoning rights (Assuming our mayor checks his e-mail and does it for me) then pad the city with newer players who will vote for me. All of the active members of the city are voting me each week, so all I need is one victory to win the election and become mayor pretty much as long as I want.
Hopefully six months from now (I've promised to serve at least six months, 'cause I'm crazy) we won't have much of a problem with inactive players so I can retire a little more easily. Even better, SOE should implement the long-requested changes that would allow a mayor to transfer power and retire when he's ready.
